I have never heard of this show as I live in the U.S., by the way. I clicked on this video thinking it was a performance of Gary's on Euro TV from 1998.
I gotts say, this contestant sounds exactly like Numan, circa late 70s, early 80s!! What an incredible performance. If he didn't win First Prize, then the judges need to be shot!!
@darkglobe09 Thanks. I was full of flu at the time, so it could have been a fair bit better I suppose but a truly great experience to be my hero for 5 minutes with all the lights and smoke and 300 people in the audience. If you can find PULP - Bad Cover Version official video I 'm also on that (with my special bit at the very end playing the tubular bells). All the best. Chris
Wait a second.. did Sugarbabes rip of this song? I mean.. this is almost the exact same tunes as one of their songs. I can't believed this dude did'nt sue their ass for this.
@Smulegule what happened is Gary gave Sugababes management/producer permission for them to use the sample. His career wasnt doing that well and it can actually help old time artists if their riffs turn up in hit singles. Personnally I thought the Sugababes Freak like Me was great (and so did Mr Numan...)
I was a wee nipper when i first watched this on the telly!?! I cherished this and my mum recorded it (but we lost the tape it was on) Thank you so much for uploading it 8D
Not bad...not so sure about the "woah...woah..." bits. I don't recall them being in the song and the 'Telekon' gettup for the 'Replicas' era track is kinda wrong (blame wardrobe for that) Good impersonation though.
You think some time you could upload a video with you singing the whole song of Are Friends Electric? I'd like to hear you sing the whole song; Your really good!
wow great job! I was confused at first. I thought this was Gary, but then realized he isn't as tall. I went back to the beginning and realized this was an impersonation. Did you ever get any feedback from Gary?
i usually cant stand this sort of stuff but he is a very good numan and adds a bit of himself...im impressed...i shouldnt be but i am...i wonder what hes doing now.
you got to love how the original back in 80'- what ever They used to play it with moog's and shit , but now there like using midi keyboards to emulate the sound xD
I missed this when it came out (thank goodness for youtube !) waited a long time to see this. sounded excellent particularly when compared to Mr Numans live shows (seen him 40 times or so live and even chatted with him when he let me sit in his Harvard plane once - he's a nice guy). I'm not really that much of a fan any more (his stuff is a bit too dark and heavy for me and i prefer the warmer tones of Sylvian in my older age !) but was really wonderful to see. thanks for posting
Yeah they literally chopped it in half so I had to relearn a song that I'd been singing for 20 years! I think they try to make each song about 2.30mins long. All the best.
I remember this at the time, was so excited - and he was bloody good - as far as I can remember he was beaten by a Gary Barlow - who wasn't anywhere near as good as this - but Barlow was pretty big at the time.
wonderful rendition singing wise but i feel the the digital synths sounded so much more weaker than what the original minimoog and polymoog that gary used did.
Main thing was having my hairline shaved off by about an inch at the front. It's amazing how that changes you! I had to have my hair like Ian Beale for 2 months afterwards whilst it grew back.
Thanks to whoever sent me the episodes aired on Saturday the 19th of April 1997, Saturday the 26th of April 1997 and Saturday the 3rd of May 1997.
I need the rest of this episode (copied onto a blank DVD) and other 1998 Stars in their Eyes episodes (except for the one featuring Al Green as the winner)
Does anyone have the 1997 episodes of Stars in their Eyes (other episodes from that year I'm not needing are those two featuring Louis Armstrong and Lulu as the winners)
no its okay, starz;i thought i did a good numan when i put his music on,but from now on i,m keeping it in the bedroom!!check his website too,his berserker dvd is out,the FULL version.

XiKiLLeDLucyX 2 years ago
I actually saw this when it was aired - I'd occasionally watch the show depending on whether I was hungover or not. :)
Sadly he was never going to win as Numan wasn't either "here and now" (90's) or "classic" (i.e. 60's/70's).
This performance was one of the best I ever - best was the guy who did Freddie Mercury.
How the Gary Barlow un-looky-likey-soundy-likey act got through from this episode is beyond me.
Good effort from both the performer and TV show.
