  • Bring back stars in their eyes!!

  • I remember the guy doing this- I think he did very well-

  • Hay, great job. Did you pinch the red belts from Numans mums wardrobe? seriously I would love to do this myself although my song would be complex.

  • Excellent performance

  • Brilliant!

  • 1ST CLASS CHRIS.I MISSED THIS EPISODE.THX

  • This Guy is spot on Brilliant he even gets the look perfect

  • @25ghr

yeah, the look is one of stars in their eyes better efforts lol...

a great performance, i hope they bring back stars in their eyes.. if they put it on before xfactor it would be a big hit again i reckon

  • I have never heard of this show as I live in the U.S., by the way. I clicked on this video thinking it was a performance of Gary's on Euro TV from 1998.

I gotts say, this contestant sounds exactly like Numan, circa late 70s, early 80s!! What an incredible performance. If he didn't win First Prize, then the judges need to be shot!!

    Much respect from California!

  • outfit was way to wrong, 2 years to early, very good though

  • how come he never smiles?

  • MAN ON! That's brilliant! Jesus wept how didn't you win?

  • great job chris im a huge numan fan and you certainly pulled it off well

  • @darkglobe09 Thanks. I was full of flu at the time, so it could have been a fair bit better I suppose but a truly great experience to be my hero for 5 minutes with all the lights and smoke and 300 people in the audience. If you can find PULP - Bad Cover Version official video I 'm also on that (with my special bit at the very end playing the tubular bells). All the best. Chris

  • WoW! Most excellent job! Cheers from the other side of the pond!

  • Wait a second.. did Sugarbabes rip of this song? I mean.. this is almost the exact same tunes as one of their songs. I can't believed this dude did'nt sue their ass for this.

  • @Smulegule what happened is Gary gave Sugababes management/producer permission for them to use the sample. His career wasnt doing that well and it can actually help old time artists if their riffs turn up in hit singles. Personnally I thought the Sugababes Freak like Me was great (and so did Mr Numan...)

  • I was a wee nipper when i first watched this on the telly!?! I cherished this and my mum recorded it (but we lost the tape it was on) Thank you so much for uploading it 8D

  • He looks hot with the makeup on

  • exellent hahaha, i thought it was Gary.

  • not bad at all

  • Not bad...not so sure about the "woah...woah..." bits. I don't recall them being in the song and the 'Telekon' gettup for the 'Replicas' era track is kinda wrong (blame wardrobe for that) Good impersonation though.

  • <3 Gary and <3 this performance :O It's bloody amazing.

  • this guy should've won stars in their eyes not the one who did gary 'sodding get' barlow who woz shit anyway

  • He looks just like him! And sounds like him too... better than most Stars in their Eyes competitors...

  • Gary Dudeman!

  • if i wouldnt have known better i woulda said that WAS gary numan they look that much alike

  • Dang, that's an amazing impersonation

  • You think some time you could upload a video with you singing the whole song of Are Friends Electric? I'd like to hear you sing the whole song; Your really good!

  • That was amazing! I'm well impressed!!

  • Fantastic!

  • fantastic

  • well done! you looked practically identical to Gary and recreated his voice and movements almost perfectly.

It's escaped my mind whether you won or not though, how far did you get in the contest?

  • Is verry good man!!!

  • damn this guy does a good job imitating Numan in my book

  • This guy is great, Its like Numans twin lol

  • Excellent!

  • wow great job! I was confused at first. I thought this was Gary, but then realized he isn't as tall. I went back to the beginning and realized this was an impersonation. Did you ever get any feedback from Gary?

  • bloody hell he looks exactly like him!

  • Wow, he's pretty good.....

  • Wow.

  • That was great!!! 5/5

  • This guy sounds so much better than Gary does now!

  • he is very good

  • Great!

  • Gary sung of replacements before. Now he has one! This guy could lead a good cover band!

  • anyone have this episode

  • Not bad at all!

  • He's really good:)

  • i usually cant stand this sort of stuff but he is a very good numan and adds a bit of himself...im impressed...i shouldnt be but i am...i wonder what hes doing now.

  • What would Gary think.

  • I actually saw this when it was aired - I'd occasionally watch the show depending on whether I was hungover or not. :)

Sadly he was never going to win as Numan wasn't either "here and now" (90's) or "classic" (i.e. 60's/70's).

This performance was one of the best I ever - best was the guy who did Freddie Mercury.

How the Gary Barlow un-looky-likey-soundy-likey act got through from this episode is beyond me.

Good effort from both the performer and TV show.

  • you got to love how the original back in 80'- what ever They used to play it with moog's and shit , but now there like using midi keyboards to emulate the sound xD

  • He's really good!

  • way cool.

  • it sounds like him yeah no its not the real numan but if that's his voice it is very close to the real numan 89% real good stuff

  • Heh, I used to love stars in their eyes, I remember this!

That guy makes a very good Numan...

    Should have won, easily!

  • I'd forgotten about this, I'm ashamed to say, however memories came flooding back after the first couple of bars!!

I'll admit, I wasn't too sure of this guy pre-transformation. However, it turned out to be an excellent portrayal of Numan.

  • he is amazing! the best stars in their eyes sound an lookalikie ever in the shows history!

  • the phil oakely one was pretty awesome too :)

  • this was amazing

  • looks good sounds good to

  • great job!!

  • I missed this when it came out (thank goodness for youtube !) waited a long time to see this. sounded excellent particularly when compared to Mr Numans live shows (seen him 40 times or so live and even chatted with him when he let me sit in his Harvard plane once - he's a nice guy). I'm not really that much of a fan any more (his stuff is a bit too dark and heavy for me and i prefer the warmer tones of Sylvian in my older age !) but was really wonderful to see. thanks for posting

  • did they cut the song short or was the clip just shortened?

  • Yeah they literally chopped it in half so I had to relearn a song that I'd been singing for 20 years! I think they try to make each song about 2.30mins long. All the best.

  • I remember this at the time, was so excited - and he was bloody good - as far as I can remember he was beaten by a Gary Barlow - who wasn't anywhere near as good as this - but Barlow was pretty big at the time.

  • Have u any episodes?

  • Gary is an alien...look, hes still young and has morhped!!!

  • I think Gary's strap was on the right side.

    ...

    Okay, this is easily the greatest thing ever to be on Stars in Their Eyes ;-;

  • Yeah thats was wicked! Who did win then? cos they must have been bloody gr8 ;/

  • lmaooo i cant get over how much he is like him

  • wonderful rendition singing wise but i feel the the digital synths sounded so much more weaker than what the original minimoog and polymoog that gary used did.

anyways, well done i liked it

  • thats pretty good!!!

  • The mad thing about this was, he DIDNT win. Fucking thing is a fix, He was amazing

  • Yes SIYEs is fixed ——————/´ ¯/) —————--/—-/ —————-/—-/ ———--/´¯/'--'/´¯`·_ ———-/'/--/—-/—--/¨¯\ ——--('(———- ¯~/'--') ———\————-'—--/ ———-'\'————_-·´ ————\———--( ————-\———-- HeShould'veWON!!!
  • Great! I wonder if Gary has ever seen this:-)

  • sounds and looks like him

  • what song is this, coz its really good?

  • This is Are 'Friends' Electric, by Tubeway Army. It was also the main part of the Sugababes Freak like me single.

  • what a great tribute to gary!!!where did he get the jumpsuit and telekon straps?

  • really enjoyed that well done

  • fantastic, never saw this, but thats gary, every mannerism, they say we all have a double, well done

  • minkia...uguale...great

  • Well what can i say,it doesnt get much better than this, why this chap doesnt start a numan tribute band is beyond me,loved it! regards from Denmark.

  • Great Impersonation!

  • spot on.your the man.

  • thats one of the best Gary Numan impersonations i have ever seen!

  • hats off to you. nice job.

  • funny to see gary personalized as a "classical" artist. at the beginning people hated him. now is a legend.

  • Brilliant impersonation, but it creeped me out really bad!

  • perfect impersonation

  • Most excellent. I love the British! I was born in the wrong country.

  • OMG Yay Im glad Im not the only one who feels like that haha!

  • Very impressive. I enjoyed listening and watching you perform. Excellent!!!!

  • Chris,

That was excellent I really thought you were him. Well done. Have you done his hit CARS?

    RB

  • Yeah I perform in a 70's band called The Grimleys and so perform Cars as its a bit faster than A.F.E.

  • yes search it on here *youtube* i just been watching it.

  • spot on mate well done

  • *claps* Brill! I wish I could sing like Gary! lol! ;)

  • I thought it was great done a good job.

  • Wow! That's pitch perfect!

    Great job... ;-)

  • that was very good

  • Great effort Chris. I'm off to see the real one do his Replicas show in Nottingham tomorrow. Can't wait!

  • I went to the Sheffield show, it was sold out but GOD what a toilet venue the Corporation is!!

  • ooooh i was at that gig... yeh ur right about toilet venue... going to see him in september at manchester academy, sooooooo excited!

  • If you are the original on this footage

What did you have done to make yourself look more like Numan?

    I know.

    Coxynuma.66.

  • Main thing was having my hairline shaved off by about an inch at the front. It's amazing how that changes you! I had to have my hair like Ian Beale for 2 months afterwards whilst it grew back.

  • Thanks to whoever sent me the episodes aired on Saturday the 19th of April 1997, Saturday the 26th of April 1997 and Saturday the 3rd of May 1997.

I need the rest of this episode (copied onto a blank DVD) and other 1998 Stars in their Eyes episodes (except for the one featuring Al Green as the winner)

Does anyone have the 1997 episodes of Stars in their Eyes (other episodes from that year I'm not needing are those two featuring Louis Armstrong and Lulu as the winners)

  • What other eps have u got?

  • None I'm afraid as this was the only one I was on.

  • cracking belts .. garys mum made the origionals. nice effort.

  • Same as stuart38- i browsed this expecting a flop. But wow was I wrong! Sterling performance! 5*

  • no its okay, starz;i thought i did a good numan when i put his music on,but from now on i,m keeping it in the bedroom!!check his website too,his berserker dvd is out,the FULL version.

  • i thought this was going to be a cringeworthy effort, but christ he was just identical.stunning.

  • Cheers Stuart38, I had the worst flu ever when I did it and my face had swollen up so I looked about a stone heavier. Or could it be I was just fat!? Probably the latter!!

  • Oh cool, I missed this the first time around, I'd watch it most weeks too in the hope that someone would do this.

    He did a good job!

  • i missed the original broadcast too, thanks starzinizeyes for posting this bit of Numan trivia.

  • Hey what a great memory! Chris was excellent!

Helen Foley was Mary Chapin Carpenter and she sang Down at the Twist & Shout. Mel sang You gotta be. I must upload Forever Love at some point. Phil xx

  • this guy is doin' a really remarkable job...

    enjoyed it a lot...

would like to own such a jumpsuit 2...

    great job!!!!

    all the best.numanhuman

  • Awesome, thanks for putting it up

  • Can someone please upload the rest of this episode? The winner of this episode was Phil Lawrence as Gary Barlow who sang 'Forever Love'. The other entrants were Mike King as Paul Rodgers of Free who sang 'All Right Now'.

Who did Mary Chapin Carpenter and what song did she sing? I know Melanie Reid did Des'ree but what song did she sing?

  • not bad not bad wish I could do that man
