For fuck's sake, I'm still getting replies to my comment on the plausibility of faster than light travel, because I called a bloke "fatter than a neutrino". I do not deny the plausibility of superoptic travel!!!
@CaliDzrtrat the best way to look at what will be held for us is to look 200 years ago in 1811. People used muskets and rifles. THIS WAS BEFORE the civil war. No radios records light bulbs. It was 40 years(about) after america won indepencende if he can go from there to here. in 200 years its completly resonble to thing we'll achive light speed
@JetAge96 Surprising that people who aren't scientists that haven't even bothered to read the publications claim that Einstein to be proven wrong.
The guys at CERN observed that some particles may have been travelling faster than the speed of light, but they were unsure if their readings were accurate. They in no way claimed that particles were indeed travelling faster than the speed of light.
I honestly don't get why compare Star Wars with Star Trek, or why create competition between any work of the sort. But that's just me.
Would appreciate if there were more comments about the music, I really like to see what others feel or felt when they listen to it watching the movie. :)
@Raraz I think the music in the film had a new energy yet syill keeping with the tone of the other films.
I do agree with you that competition between the two is pointless, they're both great and have left legacies spanning decades. Star Trek 2009 was a great way of strpping down and rebuilding the frachise with out affecting the original.
Just wait, they will do one more Trek movie with the new cast in the altered timeline. Then around the time the third movie comes out, a new Trek show will be announced in a timeline that is a mix of the original Timeline as well as the altered timeline,. that is because they need new story material, then a new Star Wars Movie will be anoouncec. somewhere in the era new Galactica movie or show will pop in and take the center stage for awhile. Then BSG fades
@Roadracer987654321 If you ask me, there isn't that much of a difference between Star Trek TOS and the original Star Wars. One's got light sabres, the other has transporters. The ones who really made them different are the fans. But Star Wars began to be too caught up in legacy instead of what made Star Wars a classic. Star Trek nearly fell into the same trap as Star Wars, then along came good ol' JJ to clean it up. That Star Trek was also about adventure and the exploration into humanity.
@Revoltingmachine haha to say that Star Wars is really just effects is stupid. Its one of the most intensly written film sagas ever. @plonker1010 I don't dispute that it was an accident. I simply think its likely to have formed somewhere else in the universe as well. I realise opinions are polarised on this issue, but I have brought to bear what I see as the most convincing evidence, i.e. the rapidity with which life seems to have developed on earth. The only thing you are saying which I dispute is that we are alone in the universe.
@plonker1010 I've not seen his latest series yet, admittedly. However I think the chances of life occuring on another planet is actually really high- look at earth. Earth became habitable as liquid water formed on the surface, 4.2 billion years ago. The first life is thought to have formed 4 billion years ago. If it was so unlikely to form, it ought to have taken a lot longer. Multiply this chance by the number of habitable planets in the universe, and you start to get a high likelyhood.
@plonker1010 How do you know? I assume the number of planets you cite is an estimate, but I'd like to see some background to that figure. (btw I agree, there's no way we're alone.)
For the life of me, I will never understand why star wars fans and star trek fans (of which I am both) always feel the need to piss all over each other. Both franchises are completely different, and enjoyable for different reasons. Wars because of the fantasy elements; jedi, lightsabers, the force. Trek because so many people somehow believe it to be a window to the future. I'm a sci-fi fan, and as such enjoy both takes on a great genre.
Light speed may be attainable, but I read an essay back in the late seventies by none other than Dr. Isaac Asimov and he said that barring the discovery of some new technology, he found it highly unlikely. Sorry, can't argue with Isaac. Wish I could.
well, dont underestimate mankind. if you had been born 100 years ago and someone told you of the technological wonders of today you wouldnt ever believe him.
my point is, they said man could not fly, and yet still our jetplanes rush through the skies with mach 3
they should make a new version of star trek that glorifies war and has a chaste hero who simply loves to kill (but all his enemies are evil of course). the hero should not even pretend that he doesn't like his job (killing alien scum).
I have seriously, SERIOUSLY looped this soundtrack for hours on end and I'm no where near tired of it. If, scratch that, when they make Star Trek XII I hope they bring some of this back.
@Blackbird26creations And BEST BELIEVE I'll be seeing it opening week!! XD Hopefully they'll have a 3D version...man I wish 3D was around when this one came out.
We will reach light speed one day --if we don't destroy ourselves first. Imagine the great achievements mankind could accomplish in the future if we could learn to get along..
"Ladies and gentlemen, the maiden voyage of our newest flagship deserves more pomp & circumstance than we can afford today. Her christening will just have to be our reward for a safe return. Carry on. All decks, this is Captain Pike. Prepare for immediate departure. Helm, thrusters."
"Moorings retracted, Captain. Dock control reports ready. Thrusters fired. Separating from Spacedock. The fleet's cleared Spacedock, Captain. All ships ready for warp."
It's amazing how Walter Matt Jeffries designed the old girl back in 1966, yet, properly rendered, she still looks beautiful and futuristic, even today.
I'm not saying this because of the new digital effects or 'cause it was just new, but this truly was tha greatest Star Trek film ever made. It's on a new level of science fiction
@CaliDzrtrat I was gonna say that mach 5 is close enough, but after doing some research speed of light is 299 million meters per second, and mach 5 is barely 1,700 meters per second, but hell yeah we'll eventually get to light speed!
@snowman2149 Beg to differ bro - the faster you go, the larger your mass becomes; if you were to reach lightspeed, your mass would be infinite (which is, of course, impossible). Not to mention time dilation, ie from your perspective time would be standing still. Additionally, FTL travel may imply time travelling backwards for you, and then you get into all kinds of hairy paradoxes.
I think that's all about right, it's been a while since I studied physics.
@Zadok13 thinking that mass becomes larger and INFINITE AT LIGHTSPEED seems like taken from an anti-scientific magicomatic fiction book. Just my 2 cents.
@Only1Woodo eheheh....now thats the way!, if I had to choose between a starship and the a "Tardis" I believe i would want to take the Tardis just to see what all the past has to offer me, than again their is that theory of steering around the sun in the starship to go back in time a certain date
@coolierex Hell Yeah >:) thats what i like to hear, NASA is making the the Gemini Aphelion in 2025 thats reaching about 4 times Sonic so....we are getting there!!!!
@CaliDzrtrat We wont because it is physically impossible. I don't know what people are smoking when they say Star Trek was a semi realistic series at all.
@NeoKingGhidorah perspectives perspectives they run wild dont they? I belive that some day we will achive a speed at least within a formital range 186,371.68 miles per second...But then again...thats just me =D
@CaliDzrtrat If we did reach time travel, surely one of us would've gone back in time to tell our past selves about this and we'd delete our own posts since the argument would be moot. I'll check back in 10 minutes to see if I need to delete this post. :P
@KristianKronicles now time travel is a different story, that would be surpassing the speed of light, taking a good shot at light 3 or 4. Which would be shifting us so fast that we would be moving through space and time. I truly think we could reach a speed close to, if not light speed, before we create technology as ingenious as warping a living organism through time itself...
@CaliDzrtrat "thumbs if you belive we will reach light-speed one day"
- Don't know if we'll reach warp speed. But......I say 'thumbs up' if you believe that no matter where humanity goes, we'll only get there if we get there TOGETHER.
@ahhhh01 Warp is actually a whole lot faster than light speed. Even at light speed, it would take us four and a quarter years to reach the nearest star system to us. Subspace is our only chance :P
@ahhhh01 Subspace is a region of spacetime that obeys different physical laws, and can thereby be used to circumvent the universal speed limit that is lightspeed. It effectively allows a vessel to pass out of normal spacetime and re-emerge at a distant point.
@deltafoxter Yeah, even achieving light speed would be an incredible milestone. It would make exploring other star systems a reality, although colonization would probably still require generational ships.
@CaliDzrtrat An idiot friend of mine keeps giving me reasons this is impossible. And I keep telling him that if we can imagine it, we'll find a way to make it happen. He is obviously not a Star Trek fan.
@CaliDzrtrat The problem with light speed is that traveling at such speeds alters the flow of time and the mass of the object traveling. If an object (such as a spaceship) could actually achieve light speed it ends up being infinitely large. And infinite amount of energy is required to move it, and there is simply a finite amount of energy in the universe. It's not a matter of "man will never fly cause that seems crazy" its a matter of breaking the physical laws of the universe.
@CaliDzrtrat Hypothetically we could achieve the ability to "jump" through space, possibly by learning to alter higher dimensions than the 4 known spacial dimensions of the universe (no, time is not included, its a dimension in many ways, but it cannot be the fourth spacial dimension). This wouldn't be "traveling light speed" though... OR! we could convert ourselves into waves and travel light speed. It would have to be waves, even particles can't actually reach light speed.
@CaliDzrtrat That all being said, I gave you a thumbs up anyways, just in case the formula's are wrong :) My point is, to the other people out there, "we used to think we wouldn't reach the moon" is an invalid argument. To "prove" light speed is possible requires disproving the current formula's regarding the speed of light.
@CaliDzrtrat OH I FORGOT! The problem with converting ourselves to waves is that WE are not traveling lightspeed. Waves are. And if they can be converted back into us it's still not technically "us." It's a new version of us. Really, we died and a new version was made. Then we get into the debate about souls and such, and whether or not the new you is still you and blah blah blah, it all gets very controversial very fast.
@13georgio Your thoughts and assertions are based on the mind of a 21st century man, Star Trek and it's technology/science are based on the potentiality of the 23rd century mind, and it is science fiction, the emphasis being on fiction. Nobody knows what the next 200 years holds regarding the bending of space/time, dna replication/rematerialization, interdimensional transport, etc. Remain positive my friend, the future is as limitless as our creativity and innovativeness can take us.
@CaliDzrtrat Yes yes, I know. I just saw a lot of arguments about whether or not it was possible from a lot of people, most (not all mind you) don't know the first thing about the math and science behind it, so I sort of lost it. :) Many theories of the past have been wrong, but many have been right, and well before their time too, I personally agree with the current formulas of light speed, but who knows. Even if it's possible, I think we'll have wiped ourselves out by then :( Oh mankind...
@CaliDzrtrat Like I said before though, I do think it is entirely possibly to mimic light speed travel. To travel such distances in short periods of time using other means. It just won't be literally a space ship moving faster and faster with "light speed" written on the speedometer :P Anyway, thank you for amusing me, I saw an interesting discussion, and I happen to love internet banter, so I thought I would add my two cents.
@CaliDzrtrat I know that theres been a lot of discussion already, but here's my input anyway; Using conventional travel, (and by conventional I mean physical travel through normal space) we'll almost certainly not reach the speed of light. As the energy we put in increases, we approach lightspeed asymptotically, i.e. we get arbitrarily close, but never quite there. However, people don't seem to pay much heed to impossibility, so I doubt that'll stop us. PM me if you fancy talking physics :)
@Lessien881 Its actually only theoretically impossible. Hundreds of years ago people thought airplanes were impossible. Given enough technology, determination, and research ANYTHING is possible.
@vfarkill No its not, the faster an object moves the more energy is needed to maintain and increase speed. An object with mass would need an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed. The movie even covers this when scotty says "i never thought of space as the thing that was moving" this is because you can not reach light speed but it is theoretically possible to fold space on itself and make space the thing that is moving
@Lessien881 Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? Saying you cant move at light speed and then saying its possible to make the universe move? What you describe would mean two ships "moving" in opposite directions could (and probably would) cause the universe to implode. I bet you're also one of the many who think that Earth is the only world that has sentient life too.

Wish I could.

they should make a new version of star trek that glorifies war and has a chaste hero who simply loves to kill (but all his enemies are evil of course). the hero should not even pretend that he doesn't like his job (killing alien scum).

@CaliDzrtrat I was gonna say that mach 5 is close enough, but after doing some research speed of light is 299 million meters per second, and mach 5 is barely 1,700 meters per second, but hell yeah we'll eventually get to light speed!
snowman2149 1 year ago
@snowman2149 alright good man, yeah light speed is about 186,00 miles per second or your explanation about meters...
CaliDzrtrat 1 year ago
@snowman2149 Beg to differ bro - the faster you go, the larger your mass becomes; if you were to reach lightspeed, your mass would be infinite (which is, of course, impossible). Not to mention time dilation, ie from your perspective time would be standing still. Additionally, FTL travel may imply time travelling backwards for you, and then you get into all kinds of hairy paradoxes.
I think that's all about right, it's been a while since I studied physics.
Zadok13 1 year ago
@Zadok13 thinking that mass becomes larger and INFINITE AT LIGHTSPEED seems like taken from an anti-scientific magicomatic fiction book. Just my 2 cents.

@CaliDzrtrat If we did reach time travel, surely one of us would've gone back in time to tell our past selves about this and we'd delete our own posts since the argument would be moot. I'll check back in 10 minutes to see if I need to delete this post. :P
KristianKronicles 1 year ago
@KristianKronicles What a shame. :(
KristianKronicles 1 year ago
@KristianKronicles now time travel is a different story, that would be surpassing the speed of light, taking a good shot at light 3 or 4. Which would be shifting us so fast that we would be moving through space and time. I truly think we could reach a speed close to, if not light speed, before we create technology as ingenious as warping a living organism through time itself...

@CaliDzrtrat "light speed" is the star wars term!! "Warp" is the trek term!

@ahhhh01 the term applies to both. and warp speed is beyond light speed.
CaliDzrtrat 1 year ago
@CaliDzrtrat "make it so Number 1!
ahhhh01 1 year ago
@ahhhh01 Warp is actually a whole lot faster than light speed. Even at light speed, it would take us four and a quarter years to reach the nearest star system to us. Subspace is our only chance :P
Lilith1777 11 months ago
@Lilith1777 what is subspace??
ahhhh01 11 months ago
@ahhhh01 Subspace is a region of spacetime that obeys different physical laws, and can thereby be used to circumvent the universal speed limit that is lightspeed. It effectively allows a vessel to pass out of normal spacetime and re-emerge at a distant point.
Lilith1777 11 months ago
@Lilith1777 But we will have to go through light-speed first than warp :D, or either way
deltafoxter 11 months ago
@deltafoxter Yeah, even achieving light speed would be an incredible milestone. It would make exploring other star systems a reality, although colonization would probably still require generational ships.
Lilith1777 11 months ago
@Lilith1777 maybe the future us will teach us how to warp or achieve light speed
deltafoxter 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat An idiot friend of mine keeps giving me reasons this is impossible. And I keep telling him that if we can imagine it, we'll find a way to make it happen. He is obviously not a Star Trek fan.
blkchk 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat The problem with light speed is that traveling at such speeds alters the flow of time and the mass of the object traveling. If an object (such as a spaceship) could actually achieve light speed it ends up being infinitely large. And infinite amount of energy is required to move it, and there is simply a finite amount of energy in the universe. It's not a matter of "man will never fly cause that seems crazy" its a matter of breaking the physical laws of the universe.
13georgio 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat Hypothetically we could achieve the ability to "jump" through space, possibly by learning to alter higher dimensions than the 4 known spacial dimensions of the universe (no, time is not included, its a dimension in many ways, but it cannot be the fourth spacial dimension). This wouldn't be "traveling light speed" though... OR! we could convert ourselves into waves and travel light speed. It would have to be waves, even particles can't actually reach light speed.
13georgio 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat That all being said, I gave you a thumbs up anyways, just in case the formula's are wrong :) My point is, to the other people out there, "we used to think we wouldn't reach the moon" is an invalid argument. To "prove" light speed is possible requires disproving the current formula's regarding the speed of light.
13georgio 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat OH I FORGOT! The problem with converting ourselves to waves is that WE are not traveling lightspeed. Waves are. And if they can be converted back into us it's still not technically "us." It's a new version of us. Really, we died and a new version was made. Then we get into the debate about souls and such, and whether or not the new you is still you and blah blah blah, it all gets very controversial very fast.
13georgio 11 months ago
@13georgio Your thoughts and assertions are based on the mind of a 21st century man, Star Trek and it's technology/science are based on the potentiality of the 23rd century mind, and it is science fiction, the emphasis being on fiction. Nobody knows what the next 200 years holds regarding the bending of space/time, dna replication/rematerialization, interdimensional transport, etc. Remain positive my friend, the future is as limitless as our creativity and innovativeness can take us.
CaliDzrtrat 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat Yes yes, I know. I just saw a lot of arguments about whether or not it was possible from a lot of people, most (not all mind you) don't know the first thing about the math and science behind it, so I sort of lost it. :) Many theories of the past have been wrong, but many have been right, and well before their time too, I personally agree with the current formulas of light speed, but who knows. Even if it's possible, I think we'll have wiped ourselves out by then :( Oh mankind...
13georgio 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat Like I said before though, I do think it is entirely possibly to mimic light speed travel. To travel such distances in short periods of time using other means. It just won't be literally a space ship moving faster and faster with "light speed" written on the speedometer :P Anyway, thank you for amusing me, I saw an interesting discussion, and I happen to love internet banter, so I thought I would add my two cents.
13georgio 11 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat Light speed would be impossible, however, warp speed is plausible
waffleownage 10 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat I know that theres been a lot of discussion already, but here's my input anyway; Using conventional travel, (and by conventional I mean physical travel through normal space) we'll almost certainly not reach the speed of light. As the energy we put in increases, we approach lightspeed asymptotically, i.e. we get arbitrarily close, but never quite there. However, people don't seem to pay much heed to impossibility, so I doubt that'll stop us. PM me if you fancy talking physics :)
93tomb 10 months ago
@CaliDzrtrat Its impossible for an object with mass to reach light speed
Lessien881 9 months ago
@Lessien881 Its actually only theoretically impossible. Hundreds of years ago people thought airplanes were impossible. Given enough technology, determination, and research ANYTHING is possible.
vfarkill 9 months ago
@vfarkill No its not, the faster an object moves the more energy is needed to maintain and increase speed. An object with mass would need an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed. The movie even covers this when scotty says "i never thought of space as the thing that was moving" this is because you can not reach light speed but it is theoretically possible to fold space on itself and make space the thing that is moving
Lessien881 9 months ago
@Lessien881 Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? Saying you cant move at light speed and then saying its possible to make the universe move? What you describe would mean two ships "moving" in opposite directions could (and probably would) cause the universe to implode. I bet you're also one of the many who think that Earth is the only world that has sentient life too.
