actual formatted size is always smaller as manufacturers use the rule that a gig is 1000 instead of 1024mb, plus on the mass production rule that exists on EVERYTHING thats not precision made (hdds, ram, resisters, capacitors so on and so forth) there is something like +_ 10%. so on that rule u could have no less than 450GB but could have up to 550. i did have that with ram before, 130mb instead of 128, on the system it was on it did make all the difference :P
I got one of these free from a friend, broken dvd drive, no HDD and no ram. 2 days later, 512 mb ram salvaged from an old AMD pc, HDD from same pc, and DVD drive fixed completely (That was the hardest bit).
Runs OS10.5 perfectly, working on getting a gig of the laptop-looking pc-2700 to boost it.
@Watswat5 How did you fix the DVD drive? (I have one of these imacs--the DVD won't play (but will load/eject& shows up in the hardware profile). Is there a fix or did you just replace it? If you replaced it what did you get (I've heard some drives won't fit because they're too long!).
@macman237 The slot for the DVD drive was violently ripped out with pliers to retrieve the disk after the Mac died. I pieced it together with a dremel and a CD drive tray.
Nice job, but the problem is that those macs are was to packed in. I got an iMac g5 off of eBay for only $300 amd it works great! It came with the new wireless keyboard and the majic mouse! It has a 180 GB hard drive and 2 GBS of RAM. you should really look into a new computer. Also, those macs are great and all, but I think the g4 is very ugly

The reason t]your hard drive showed up less is because of the way your manufacturer defines a Gigabyte and how your mac describes it. The manufacturer describes 1GB as 1,000 Megabytes. But computers use 1GB as 1024, so logically there is that much of a difference. I had a 1TB hard drive and it showed up as like 936GB or something like that. Good video though!
with this setup, you can tun 10.4 just fine. you can upgrade to 1 gb or ram but you have to find a 512 MB SDRAM which is hard and expensive, so if you dont bother with the ram, your iMac will run tiger just fine.

debo33- yes, it's possible if you get the same exact processor (other than the speed of course) BUT you need to keep in mind that the higher the clock of the cpu is the hotter it will get so it may overheat. just make sure you have sufficient cooling. everything else should be fine! good luck!

You need an original airport uhm ram can only get to 1gb but the laptop size of the ram which is pc 133 can be expensive for a 512, otherwise the internal ram is cheaper. and harddrive i dont think theres a limit then u could put a dvd burner if really desired.
no lol, its because the firmware on the iPod takes up 300+ Mb and then the drives need to be formatted which takes up space as well. And operating systems are big and take up space
i didn't feel like repeating other peoples comments. There are many factors that contribute to that, such as the fact that companies say 1GB is 1 billion bytes when truthfully it is actually 1073741824 bytes so, you lose 70 MB per GB which is a lot.
When you check the system profiler does it show as having 2GBs of RAM? I'm upgrading my iMac 17" and it won't recognize the second gigabyte of RAM. Thanks.

Those extra bytes add up to give what seems like less space

I wanted to upgrade my 15inch 700mhz and changed the 128 to 512mb and wanted to get the 2nd but it needs some weird screw driver.
1. What do I need to open it.
2. Will I need the bigger ram for the inside or can I use the same one on the outside?
3. Something is wrong with my Tiger disk, it wont read. I have this new mac book with no firewall so is there a way I can upgrade the OS

When computer manufactures should be saying when you buy a computer is that the hard drive is 500 billion bytes instead of 500 gigabytes. the reason 500 billion bytes doesn't equal 500 gigabytes is because for ever 1024 bytes, not ever 1000, that equals one kiliobyte and so forth until you get to gigabytes. Those extra bytes add up to give what seems like less space

It only recognized 465GB because every disc (drive) must be formatted in order to be used. It isn't the computer, it's just the way that drives work!

It means that the OS isn't found on the startup disk. Go into System Prefs. and click your drive and restart. That should do it.

Somewhere between 150 and 250 pounds, they might've fallen a bit in pricing as it's been revealed that Snow Leopard doesn't run on non-intel machines
Btw, I tried running GarageBand on mine the other day - Not recommendable. Doesn't do music lessons and it could barely record a track while other tracks were playing.

So for whatever reason, recently I've been having these urges to track down old stuff and play with it (dont ask, lol). So i kind of wanted to track down an Imac G3 like the one i had, but since its a CRT screen it probably draws alot of power. Does anyone know the relative power draw of the CRT G3 Imac VS the LCD G4 imac? And how much i may be able to get either one for? And no, i'm not going to buy a brand new imac, so dont try to convince me ;-)
