The People of Canada lost 92 acres of Experimental Farm land: "Order in Council: February 25, 1988 - Surplus Crown Assets Act - Sale to the Regional Municipality of Ottawa of a surplus parcel of vacant land (37.63 ha.) forming part of the Central Experimental Farm, which is situated on the west side of Merivale Road, north of Baseline Road, in the City of Ottawa, Ontario." Agriculture Ministers Bud Olson and Eugene Whelan, true heroes, refused to privatize any land at the Experimental Farm.
This takes me back 20 years, the cold Japan winters in Matsudo-shi Chiba-ken with my boyfriend....I never wanted that time to end but it had too...I had to come back to America my home. We listened to George Winston daily in the cold winters...my memories will never die and I will always pray for him, and hope he is happy wherever he is. I loved that kind gentle man, he was so rare, so deep, so kind and everyone loved him. I wish I had told him I would never forget him.
Thanks Mudhooks. Very nice video. One that takes you out of high gear and slows things down a bit. We all need that. I first heard of GW in 1987. I slept in a newly built garage loft - in Nederland, Colorado. I awoke one morning to the sound of this song. Beyond this song - I could look out and see the Continental Divide and hear dozens of birds singing at the same time. You want to talk about feeling like being somewhere not of this world? This was that moment.
This is one of Winston's signature solos--beautiful! His music always paints me the image of being alone in the woods in the winter--so much solitude but yet comforting. Your video does just that as well. Thanks!
@unebonnevie. agreed. i used to listen to this on road trips with my family. about the only thing that could calm me down. so serene. also reminds me of the snow when it muffles out the other sounds. then there's just you and life. no mind distractions. beautiful and peaceful.
It is in downtown Ottawa.... not RIGHT down town but well within the city limits. Back in the 60s, this used to be "practically in the country". Now, thousands of commuters a day get to travel through this on their daily down town commute. It's beautiful all through the year. The Botanical Gardens, the Arboretum, and cattle barns and fields, as well as parks and fields are all there and free to visit.
@Mudhooks oh dear....have i said something you dont like??..if you cant take comments dont put your stuff out there......any way got 2 go....you know videos 2 slag down and wot not
Beautiful video, A. Keep up the good work. Watching it feels like being in the car. And don't worry about people who don't like it and can't spell "interesting".
george winston does wat most pianist fail to do; realize how powerful music is, how close it is from touching our hearts itself. im 13 and looooove playn this song. its so thought provoking
This is so beautifull. I wish all teens like myself would listen to this type of music at least once. It might touch some of them, and maybe prevent some bullying, for music is a powerfull thing.
thanks for something positive. there are so many nuts in the world who. I was bullied and all those guy now are either in prison or are looked upon by my small community as scum
You're not the only one. I'm 23 now, but I was always made fun of for liking music like this. I think kids really miss out when they don't even give it a try.
My parents always had all sorts of music available to me as a kid. Of course, we didn't have a radio or tv until I was in my teens so I wasn't exposed to pop music except through my friends. But when I was little, my mother was a teacher so all the babysitters played rock music so I got to hear everything, really. I listened to jazz, World music, folk, country... everything. It widens your horizons.
True story... Because I didn't have a radio, I wasn't too clear on how it worked. I always thought that when the announcer said "And now we have The Beatles playing 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'..." It was The Beatles playing the song down at the station. I couldn't understand why my friends who were real fans weren't going crazy and wanting to run down to the station.
Hey my friend....Im from UK and I didnt understand the last comment you got myself...lol....speaking as a Brit....you was DEFINITELY on the right side of the road....but apart from all that...just wanted to say, I enjoyed this ride through the snow with beautiful calming music...thank you, much love and joy to you ♥♥♥
Back in 83, my mom, childhood friend and I were traveling back from vacation in her camper truck. I was resting the tape player on my lap because her old truck only had an AM radio installed. It was dark outside, windy and raining fairly hard. We were traveling along PCH hwy in So-Cal and this somber song was playing perfectly to the scene just outside the wind shield. Over 25 years later when I heard this song once again, I think of her now since her passing and am thankful.
Even though I'm only 14, I went to see my first George Winston concert in mid-December with my parents (my dad likes his music) and absolutely fell in love with his work. The way he played it was magical and undescribable; the combination of the notes and chords that he uses really sounds like that particular season. I've been playing piano for almost 8 years now and I look up to him as an inspiration. Thanks for the video.
This is one of my favorites from George Winston-I have been privledges to have seen him play twice in the 80's-and each time he was barefoot when playing the piano-and the second concert he played some Hawaiian Slack guitar which was amazing!
This video makes me almost look forward to winter-if I didn't have to drive/shovel the snow, I would like winter more:-)
I play this video to meditate. I love the winter scenes you beautifully created here. Watching this video is like taking a 10 minute winter vacation. And as a person raised in the northeastern US living in Florida, I need it.
what beautiful music so relaxing and unwinding a perfect song for the end of a hard day. Im very pleased. The video did help visualy but i just wanted to close my eyes and reflect though. Thanks
Thanks for putting this up. Incredible. That is a perfect video manifestation of Winston's music. So elemental. I loved it. Winston is my favorite musician and has been for over 25 years. Have you done a video with fall colors to his music?
No, I haven't. The last video I did of fall colours, unfortunately, didn't turn out so well because of problems with the light through the windshield.
It is a beautiful drive. Now that my office moved to the other side of the Rideau Canal, I only drive that route on the odd occasion. Usually it's the Carleton U. side of the canal I take.

I have a small tripod, just about 4 inches tall) which I clamp to my sunvisor. Of course, I can't use my visor but I get the video! The video is shot upside down and I flip it over using my video program.
Thanks, Rob! It is a shame that all the snow has more or less disappeared. Normally, the Rideau Canal (to the left in the first half of the video) would be open to skaters. It is actually Spring-like weather which may be fine for some but I like the winter to be "wintery".
