Thanks for the great video, it is just what I was looking to accomplish when I select a cabinet. You saved me time with your idea for the conversion; I think I'll follow it closely b/c my situation is like yours, a couple long guns and more room needed for smaller stuff. A clever and frugal idea (frugal is a good thing).
Nice work! I saw one of these cabinets at a gun show and now that I see the modifications you've done I am considering buying one. Thanks for the video!
I just converted one of these cabinets two days ago into an ammo storage cabinet. I used 3/8 plywood with 1x2 supports on the sides and back. I also made a false floor in the bottom that can be removed to hide small things under. Works great!!!. I plan to glue felt on the shelves to make it look nicer and to keep from getting possible splinters.
I just bought this one the other day. The plastic shelf can seem a bit flimsy, but it goes bolted twice to both sides of the unit with staked nuts. It can hold up to twenty 25 round 12 gauge boxes easily. The plastic shelf has an elevation on both sides so that nothing might fall.
I'm currently taking advantage of the space behind the shelf to slide the end of my shotgun carrying case through. It works like a charm.
Like Aneid, I used the inside of the door for handgun storage. But I didn't use pegboard. I used a Rack 'Em 8 gun in-safe door handgun rack. It was meant to be installed in a safe - not a cabinet, but I was able to cut it up and use the pieces to build something usable.
@Dano: I've never posted anything here, video-wise. I guess I'll have to add my offering to the Stack On 8-Gun Cabinet saga in the near future, probably on the heels of your post here. Gosh, there's so many things you can do on the web to one of these things. Maybe, it's not a safe; but I had the guns in the usual, steal-able places before, so this is a definite improvement.
And last, I added one of those push-button lights, and two dehumidifier. In the future, I plan on hardening the closet the cabinet is located in. Again, love your post, thanks!
Also, through the mending bars, I place two 1/2" eye bolts, one on each side of the cabinet. I ran a cable lock through those eye bolts, then through the trigger guards of the rifle. So, even if they door is breeched, someone would have to get through the cable lock. To the backside of the door, I added a white pegboard, and hung two pistols on peg-board hooks. To utilize as much space as possible.
I then found long mending bars, that I used instead of fender washers, running 3" long 3/8" lag bolts against the back wall and one side of the cabinet to the studs in the closet it sits in. The mending bars spread out the force, if someone tries to pry the cabinet loose. I also anchored the base to my concrete floor with expansion bolts and fender washers. The thing is fairly rigid now.
I'm no handy man, so there was much trial and error. I tried to harden the Stack On cabinet by adding two 6-inch hasps and Master Disc locks 1/3 the way from the top and 1/3 way up from the bottom; used fender washers in that installation. I added 7 bolts up either side of the piano hinge; otherwise, only alumimun pot-rivets reinforce the welds.
It is not extremely heavy. After all, it is not a safe, it's a security cabinet. It's mainly meant for keep your kids and such out of your guns. I'm a big guy and I bear-hugged it into the house and the shelves probably didn't add but 4 or 5 lbs. It can be bolted to the floor and/or the wall. I wouldn't recommended bolting it to just the floor though. Because of its heighth and small footprint, it could be rocked back and forth til the metal fatigued. Hope this helps.
Just finished my own Stack On 8 Gun Cabinet installation. I have more long guns versus hand guns, but I appreciate what you did to your Stack On. Too many good ideas, including yours, to incorporate in one gun cabinet. Thanks for the video!
