Which type of wood gives off more heat? I would think it would be the birch since that's a hardwood & pine is soft?

that's why this load was cheaper and the old one more expensive even though it was less wood.

It's easier to get a chimney fire with pine too since it gives off more pitch & gooey stuff that can coat the chimney. Probably not a worry over a short period of time. The hotter the fire the less the chimney buildup.
