@xRadicalAurax My daughter uses it at home only, so for her, the 15 works out. If it were me going to college, I'd also carry a 15 (eyes not so good anymore lol). The 13 is a nice size, I got an XPS 13" for my younger daughter. Unless you really prefer 13" for some reason, I'd go with the 15" for more screen real estate. If it was me in college that'd leave room for skype etc.. to use on part of the screen while working. Ultimately, though, it's up to you and what works best for you.
@tinfamily Oh, one other thing. Look at your course program and what languages you'll be learning and make sure that you can "be on the same page" with the class. (I use both macs & pc's and wouldn't want to be the only pc user in a class full of macs or the other way around). Just my 2 cents :) all the best!
Most pc laptops come with only one wire (to plug into a wall socket). Your macbook looks like it came with two wires... one to plug int a wall socket, but what is the second one for?
I asked my daughter (it's been so long I forgot)... she said it's an extension wire for the power supply.
Talking about power supplies, I really like the magnetic method Apple uses to attach the power. No more bad computers due to someone tripping on the wire! Wish I had that on my XPS.
No. I'm Chinese, born in San Francisco. Third generation American. I love Thailand, though. I'm guessing you may have noticed the amulet? That amulet is from my Ajarn, that did the yants on my back. Thanks for asking. :)
I am thinking about getting one of these for college. Which screen size do you think is best? I mean 13 inch is obviously more portable and lightweight. Yet the 15 inch obviously has more screen size, yet is slightly bigger and heavier. I am not really sure.
13" is much easier to carry but if you're doing alot of photo/video editing or anything else that requires a larger screen or more screen real estate for a bunch of toolbars then the bigger one would work.
My older prefers her 15" and my younger daughter prefers the 13" XPS I just got her for her sweet 16 birthday.
You can get the 13" macbook pro now for $1199 or you can get the 15" for $1699, great prices for the new features. (7 hour battery life, SD card slot, better display color, faster processor, more memory, more HD space)
My daughter is back from City U. of Hong Kong (exchange student) and is back for a little while. Her computer has held up very well & it served her well. Looks like a good college machine. I just bought my younger daughter the 13" XPS with 500 gig / 4 gig / vid upgrade for less money, because she (like me) is dual platform and I wanted more bang for the buck. That and the younger one is familiar with both OS (mac/pc) and didn't care. I'll get to making a video of that one when I have time. thx!
As far as I know, the newer ones have the aluminum body with backlit black keys. The older ones had the silver trim around the screen and also silver non-backlit keys. Not 100% on that, but I'm pretty sure that's how it worked.
She's doing well with it :) She'll be back home from HKG univ this month. I'll have to see how well the alumibody stood up to a (half) year of college.
im planning on getting this macbook pro. out of interest could i use my time machine from my macbook (early 08 model) running 10.5.6, on it to get everything installed like my old macbook (files and programs.etc..) . because im going to need to sell my macbook in order to get the money for this and only have time machine as a fail safe for all my docs and stuff.
Nah, I'm home here in California. The door screen behind me we picked up in Osaka, Japan & the picture above and behind me we had done in a studio in Hawaii a while back.
That'd be the old Mac OS vs Windows argument I'd guess. I like the Macs for some things (like video editing) but am happy with pc for photo editing and gaming and things like that. My daughter has the mac so it's a moot point now. All I have in my office are PC's, though my wife and other daughter have macs and pc's both.
I found for video playback over HD, that both computers work very well. They both seem "zippy" for doing whatever I want on them. They are both equally easy to carry around, although the mac is lighter (slippier too!). You can get an xps 1530 for about 500 to 1000 (depending on if you catch a hot sale/rebate/cashback) cheaper than the Mac right now.
Hi! A couple of reasons. She's overseas in school & we'll only see her 2 days during Christmas before she goes back for the rest of the school year. She wants it all set up and ready to roll, since her plate is pretty full with all her other activities. She kidnapped my XPS when she came home for the funeral (her old laptop wasn't cutting it), so I'm using her new MacBook Pro until we make the switch.
im not to crazy about the design (im more into the smooth, artistic macs). this looks more like a dell than a mac. but it looks very pratical and some nice features. great vid
I would agree it's a far cry from the smooth white look I'm used to. It does have a great tactile feel to it, though. For me, it's different but I still like it. It's quite thin. As thin as my PC laptop if you removed the monitor from the PC laptop heheh.
I've been using it with the apple mini-video out to DVI cable and it looks gorgeous on my plasma tv.
Bro! I was looking for you until I remembered you don't work there at all anymore :P I know that camera you want too....sexy! I have alot of glass on my wishlist but it's all going to have to wait at this point :D
'Designed by Apple in California (by a English guy) made in malaysia (by immigrant workers)' lol getting mine soon. What compression do you use to get stunning quality video?
On this particular video, I used the iMovie's built in publish to YouTube settings! It renders (i think 640x480?) and then uploads it to YouTube directly from the program. One more thing that Apple has got dead on. :)
gotta say that a new macbook pro is a awsome present for your daughter the only thing im wondering (no offence) is why you are opening your daughters present?
haha yea, pretty much everything that my dad said. also, im studying abroad right now and wont be home until christmas. i'll let him play around with it until then. =)
ah my dad started me on the Apple II+ way, way, waaaay back in the day. I've had almost one of every type of mac up until the big white all-in-one iMac, since then I haven't kept up as much. Right now I'm dual platform. Some software I need to use is PC (some games toO!)
cool! I've had it on for 4 hours continously this morning (no sleep, processing and moving files) and it's just gotten to "warm" near the [fn] key on the right hand side. I notice that transfers via usb to the ipod are extremely fast compared to my quad core pc's usb. I'm not sure why that would be.
I got the $1999 model, congrats to you on yours :D If I was going for a desktop substitute that I could lock down in a dorm room (oh so many years ago lol) then the 17 would be pretty sexy... or the 15 and a wall mount LCD external monitor :D
I got mine at the Apple store at the Stonestown Galleria in S.F. They had supplies but the store was very busy and it looked like they were selling them as fast as they could service people. Not a long line like the iPhone but very good business.
Hi! ...LOL my 15 year old daughter was doing the video and after I was saw that! but yeah slightly embarrassing :D
The computer runs not-too-hot on top. It got a little warm on the bottom when I set it on the bed for 3 minutes but otherwise it's quite cool on top. On a table it's barely warm on the bottom. Ergonomics are comfortable enough and the new 'one big button' trackpad is surprisingly easy to get used to. I'm using it now and really enjoying it. Enjoy your new computer tomorrow!
Would the 13" or 15" be better for a college student majoring in Computer Science?

She just needs it ready to go and use without downloading & purchasing software, testing to make sure it works, configuring e-mail settings etc..
