HORRIBLE advice. There's sprinters who are 5'6" and wear a size 12 shoe. There's 6'2" sprinters who wear size 9 shoes. And the flipside. You DON'T measure you're feet. You measure the ANGLE your SHINS make perpendicular to the ground - 45 degrees. This ensures equal horizontal and vertical force.
How's it working for you. If it works for you then you're in the right spot. It's all about the right angles for the best start. For beginners it's about finding a balance between comfort and tension.
Dont you think that if you put "too" much weight on your hands, you cant exercise a good tension with your feet against your blocks?....... because i may be have this problem...!
Move your foot pegs back one slot each. There should be some weight on your hands but not enough to make them shake from tension. No weight on your hands means that you will stand up to soon and to much weight means that you stumble when go.
damn its my first year in track and today we practice with the blocks and it felt that u were going to fall on your face...is it suppose to be like that??? or am i doing it wrong
It's supposed to make you feel like you're about to fall. Then if you get a good push you'll go through the drive phase and start off low so you won't pop up too fast.
My problem is that the blocks can only be moved back so far, I'm so tall and lanky even when I move the blocks as far back as they go I still feel crammed. At indoor meets they have all the blocks on a chain so you cant slide them further away from the line. Only someone 5 foot 10 or shorter could fit comfortably but I'm 6 foot 2 and 150 pounds.
And I know my strentgh isn't the problem, I'm very explosive, I high jump 6'4". I have alot of power even though it may sound like I'm a scronny distance runner or something. This such a huge problem, I know my max speed is right there with the fastest kids in the state, but I get murdered in the first 15 meters and pretty much catch up between 15m to 50m and then go by people around 60m. I run an 11.9, If I was right there with everyone at 15m that would easily be an 11.4 or less.
6 2 and 150 pounds? um i can tell you right now that you're not strong enough. the reason you find it uncomfortable even with your blocks so far back is because you dont have enough strength to really explode out of the blocks. a taller person really has to work on that lower back strength really getting a good knee drive
Well now I actualy weigh 160, and I found out I'm 6'1", thats not much of a difference but its just a little less tall and skinny then you think I'm am. But now that I'm watching vids of these olympic athletes on youtube it seems that thier blocks are allowed to go way further back then we are allowed at my meets, they don't seem to give a shit how comfortable you are at a high scool level, and its hard for me to explode when I'm crammed.
Do Blocks make a huge difference to time? Im 18 years old and Ive been running for 3 years without blocks and I am hardly ever beaten out of the "Blocks" as they say without using them....I have a personal best time of 10.49 how much could I knock off that if I did start to use blocks, or wouldnt it make that much of a difference? reason I havent used them is because ive felt I have a good enough start without them.
blocks make a HUGE difference especially in shorter distance races. you basically get a PUSH off the start. or i should say a BETTER push compared to a no block start.
you can knock off a considerable amount of time from your 10.49 second 100. i'd say at least 0.2 seconds if you get the block start perfect maybe more.
With the block start, the footing in the blocks should be natural, which means the legs should feel right coming out of the Blocks. If anything though I would put the stronger leg closer in the Blocks because the athlete may want that power to push off when the gun goes!

while i agree that the stepping is pretty much correct i think that the angle is based on the athletes preference.

The balls of your feet should be firmly planted on the blocks

isn't it angled based on the athlete's arm length, leg length, lower leg length, and foot size?

okay. but like how far back should the base be. like the thing u put the blocks on.
mthompson24 3 years ago
okay try twelve inches for the front of the base. If the back foot rest does not fit on the base plate move the base plate back another 6 inches.
wightonz 3 years ago
are you kidding me. Without the proper angles you will never get a proper start. Comfortable or not.
wightonz 3 years ago
i thought you were supposed to feel uncomfortable in the blocks so you'll explode out quicker? thats what my coaches said
MalarkyMan15 3 years ago
yuh but how far back should the blocks be like the base of it?
mthompson24 3 years ago
take two steps and the front foot rest should be there the base is not revelent
wightonz 3 years ago
Yes. This is the basic method for setting up blocks. You might need to tweek it a little once you get comfortable
