The only reason why Steve never got the recognition some of his contemporaries did was because in spite of his incredible talent, he was always very low key. To him it wasn't about the glam, or the looks, or the money. It was simply about the music.
I love this song so much!! I love Stevie so much!! He should have a much bigger following then what he has! He should have a following as big as Clapton's!!!!
Another Steve Winwood favorite of mine. The Man will always be a big favorite of mine. I'm just amazed at what a remarkable talent he is!!! Steve Winwood definitely in the house, NO DOUBT!!!
In 1977.. I got to "guest" host on a local radio station for Triton Community College....The first thing i did when i got in the studio was play 3 cuts from Steve Winwood's solo debut album......Hold On...Time Is Running Out and Vacant Chair.......Then in 2005...I actually met Steve after his concert in Chicago....A dream come true.... I can die a happy man!!
I'm a life long fan.He is the Greatest Muscian and Singer of ALL TIME..period.
John Peel played a few tracks from this album late one night on his radio show back in 1977, I just had to get the album the next day , still have the original album, much underrated should have been given more airplay on the radio. still rates as one of my favourite albums of all time.
THis song didn't hit the US hot 100. He didn't do that on his own until 1981 with While You See a Chance; nothing from this album cracked the US hot 100, but the album did hit the album charts. There was no mainstream rock charts on Billboard until 1981.
@zachhoran Yeah, that was a really dry period for good music. I bought this album the minute it came out and so much apppreciated some good music to sink my teeth into.... Not at all surprised that his good music got overlooked back then. Maybe if he had red hair and wore a mini skirt and snorted dope...... Sad......
I just bought the album yesterday, and I loved it. The only reason I can see why people were disapointed by it back in the day was because there isn't one particularly memorable song, such as Higher Love that would come later. The style is somewhere in between Traffic and his later pop solo albums. But on its own, it's a very good record. Maybe not perfect, but I'll be listening to it very often in the days to come.
the lead track from steve's first solo project in 77, some great tunes highlighting his singing and fine keyboard work, plus with some help by JIm Capaldi from traffic days, the synth work he odes on this track became trademarks in later songs from Arc of the Diver..........good stuff
I am 27 and I can remember watching his videos on early MTV and early VH1. I honestly cannot remember my early life without his music in it especially Valerie!
exquisite. how could it be anything else it's winwood. thanx so much for the fine post and great pics. most of all for the rememberance of this great song from this amazing album
dream gerrard is a song on "When The Eagle Flies" by Traffic. In my opinion the finest. A deep spiritual acid trip of colorful flowing music that becomes a tribute to mother nature. One of the most important musical statements of our time. Ck it out
Las últimas fotos, con Eric Clapton, son del concierto del año pasado en el MSG de New York. Por si alguien no lo sabe, tanto el DVD como el CD se pueden conseguir en la web de Winwood.
brighton must have been great. i've never been to a winwood concert that wasn't but it's been a couple decades since i've been to any concert as i live so far away in the woods now. did get to see/hear traffic and blind faith while they were in their prime and some winwood concerts like roll with it and back in the high life. right now i'm just walking in the wind with my dream gerrard. hoh
winwood has a whole house full of unknown or overlooked songs like that. . .some of my faves are there's a river, vacant chair, mozambique, different light, and about a dozen other amazing works of musical art. this whole album was more than just rewards for a lifetime love of winwood music and it's still growing.
Was lucky enough to see him live in Brighton a couple of weeks ago. The voice just hasn't changed and his mastery of the Hammond is, if anything enhanced. He opened with 'Different Light', guitar played by the same Jose Neto as on the album. Incredible band and a terrific gig.
@simonj50 Know what you mean! Saw him a couple years ago in Kingston NY and he sang Spencer Davis hits like he was 15 - then later on he tore it up on his Strat on Dear Mr Fantasy. Master of the B3 as well. So much talent and yet so humble. Inspiring! Gives his home country a good name.
Love this song..... not very well known, but real mellow and soulful... dont know why this didn't garner equal praise for Steve Winwood's songs like the others
The man is poet with a marginal voice that makes the poetry sound all the better.

This is Steve Winwood on vocals (not Capaldi) and features the great Andy Newmark on drums. Classy drum part.

I believe Jim Capaldi is the vocalist?

It's all about mastery of his art, what a virtuoso performance in everything he does with his music. It does lift your spirit...
