I found out about this movie by listening to a song by The Smiths - "This Night has Opened My Eyes" based on A Taste of Honey. Wow. Great movie and great song, though I am not fond of the ending. I've read that this play or movie is about racial issues, and a heartless drunk of a mother, but I find it's more about Jo and her friendship with Geoffrey and her unwillingness to end a toxic situation with her mom. We are a victim only to the bad choices we make. Thank you Elidor for posting!
Philip Larkin was right. : "They fuck you up your mum and dad..." What a complete cow Jo's mum was in this story, but because she was her mum Jo simply didn't have the courage to cut her out of her life so she could escape and be happy. Misplaced trust and loyalty is always seized on by manipulating, dominating needy parasites, especially when it's in a parent/child context. Wonderful film - sad message.
It's my opinion she should of stuck with Jeff instead of allowing her Mother to barge back in but I guess blood is thicker than water. It's sad how Jeff allows her Mother to run him off after they had became such good friends and housemates.
that mother had no right to barge back in after geff had been looking after her daughter she will dissapear again once a man comes along. Joe and geff loved each other but geff had zero confidence in himself, joe was much harder
Geoff, actually left because he saw that the constant bickering between him and the Mother would have not been good for Jo, Jo would have been split in half if they all 3 stayed together.
best. movie. ever.
