Back when Jurassic Park came out and Dr. Grant was insisting that TRexes can't see you if you don't move, I used to laugh because I had an alligator lizard at the time. Alligator lizards also can't see you if you don't move - so they just shake their heads sideways - and then they can see you just fine. IRL, Grant and Malcolm would have been Rex food.
yah mines brown with greyish brown stripes on it this one appears to be all grey with black stripes very nice lizard i wish mine had its tail. but i believe it was lost when my cat was trying to kill it but after all if it wasnt for my cat i would have been chaseing one around for hours hahaha.
crickets are good for them but not waxworms or roaches. they like flies, pinkies, moths, beetles, spiders, and the other things that live where they live. that's a healthy looking captive tho.
I feed mine some waxworms and mealworms...though my big girl don't seem to love them as much, one day she hate 7 waxworms and then never wanted to eat more again...>.<
I have 2 of those, one was only a juvenile when I got it and the second is an adult, I think they are both females and they love being with each others, they always sleep with each others too, they are not agressive but not tame eitheir...
Terrariums with living plants need different layers of potting soil, gravel, charcoal, and sand. Look into how to make a terrarium for plants. Your lizard will be happier and healthier.
Make your tank a terrarium with living plants that will give moisture and oxygen to the lizard and soil from the yard,(along with potting soil from a nursery), with microbes that will breakdown animal's waste. That white stuff, (and bark or other supposedly "natural" lizard bedding) just absorbs the waste material and harbors bacteria and mites. Also, the ammonia from the urine is bad for the lizard and humans to inhale.
If you're going to make a natural looking environment with branches, plants, fake rock water bowl and a mural, then you should also make the bottom of the tank natural as well, instead of having whatever that white stuff is on the bottom of the tank. The floor totally distracts from all the other natural and natural looking stuff in the tank. It's like having an aviary in a zoo with a white tile or concrete floor. It doesn't fit.
nice set up.. I would have more rocks and things for him to hide in/under he is pretty big tho looks like this one I caught outside my house last year
This appears to be a northern alligator lizard. An interesting note is while southern alligator lizards lay eggs, northern alligator lizards give birth to live young.
@mmmmmarcus i never new that northern alligator lizards layed eggs...btw, how do u tell the difference between a northern alligator lizard and a southern alligator lizard apart from their physical features?
@yowhatup1231 Well, in the case that you end up with a black alligator lizard with no markings, the only way to know is either: #1)--- Where you found the lizard, and #2)--- Blood test. californiaherps,com/lizards/lizardspics,html replace those commas with periods.
Nice..ive always wanted a southern. But to see my northern alligator lizard, im pretty proud of it. I believe northerns are less common then southerns. Surprised me much when i found out there were canadian reptiles besides garter snakes.

Alligator Lizards are way cool I used to catch them in the Bay Area, I love how this one would move his head left and right like a leaf waving in the air. Great now I'm getting the bug to go and find one... :)
I have a question. I've got two alligator lizards. Pat is long and skinny, like the one in this video. Fred is a bit fatter and has a wider head. Are they still the same type of alligator lizard? And what genders are they?
you cant buy them i have 2. not sure what gender they are but we've had them for 2-3 years now. My brother found the first when at the poolside at our apartment complex i lived at and i found the other one in the office at the apartment complex i think there was a whole somewhere in the wall or something.
I have two of those!! I found one traped under my garage door, so i kept it and raised it back to health. It was paralized in its back legs so i kept it and i found a male later and she got pregnant......... so now i have two
i kawt an alligator lizard in my backyard n yours is a female because the head isnt large and triangular. i have a male and mine is probably a little bit bigger then urs. its in tha same cage with my fence lizard and they dont fite..
