I like Elina Garanca! She is one of my favourites! She has beautiful voice and her technics is good. One thing I dont like it. Elina Garanca is a little bit moderate to me, i think, she could sing with more passion, with more emotion, dynamic. But I like her, and her high notes are really good. Lower voices are sometimes a little bit nasally, but it doesnt matter to me. I just like her.
6 years on from the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and the voice has certainly developed beautifully. But despite the comment above about machine gun coloratura, Bartoli's agility is perfect, with every note accentuated and her trills are excellent as well. Here Garanca has fine interpretive skills, but technically, although her agility is pretty good and in fact one of the best of the current mezzos, NO-ONE can touch Bartoli on that score. Her top note was in tune this time. So brava.
I've always liked Elina's singing. I've only seen her live once, in Cenerentola at the Met. I am sorry she has moved away from this high, fast-moving repertoire, because it suits her so well.
If she had made such a wonderful interpretation in a Latin country... OMG, I think there's no way people here could resist to sart acclaiming her until the orchestra had finished
If she had made such a wonderful interpretation in a Latin country... OMG, I think there's no way people here could resist to start acclaiming her until the orchestra had finished
She's not a mezzo!!!!!!!! She is a sopran! And the voice is nothing special, her timbre is not beautiful!!! Technick is no snging!!!! I am wondering about that noise around her!!!!
I love her version so much! Amazing technique and ornaments. What a special voice: a rich mezzo middle and bottom, and a free and easy soprano top.
Her placement has gotten much better over the past few years. Her Italian is sitting nice and front without being too bright. And the passage at 2:13? Sublime. She deserves the success she's gotten recently. I just hope I can see her Carmen sometime.
Elina is simply amazing!!!! i got the pleasure to be in the cast of Carmen at Royal Opera House in London where she perormed Carmen ! One of the best artist met in my Life...extraordinay singer and actress as well !! all the best to Elina
Such a nice rich sound its almost as if she is the Mezzo version of Kiri, and that coloratura is far better than what she performed at the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2001!! She just keeps getting better and better! love her voice!
I agree that this is one of the most pleasant and respectful opera discusions I've read on youtube. Thanks for that. On another note, I heard Garanca on Siriux XM Metopera radio this week for the first time as Cenerentola. And now I have a new opera obsession (as if I didn't have enough already)! She's truly wonderful. I hope I can see her in Carmen.
Elina sings this aria as well as anyone - it depends on one's taste e.g. Joyce, Cecilia, Agnes etc. I like Elina in all registers.Cecilia's voice got lost in the Met when I saw her but is good on CD. We're lucky to have Elina, Joyce and Cecilia as current mezzos. I also read Angela G. cancelled her 1st 6 Met 2009-10 Carmen's and Elina is taking them over! That's good news - can't wait to hear her. Alagna will remain as Elina's Don Jose.
Preciosa mujer y preciosa voz, vocalmente impecable.. Ahora bien, me sigue pareciendo una soprano lírico. Por qué se empeña en cantar papeles de mezzo? Sus graves suenan artificiales y su centro no es ancho como las mezzos auténticas. Sorry, I still think she is a soprano, and should stick to soprano roles.
Don't misunderstand me: she sings beautifully, but her voice is too thin No matter if her low notes are good, but they change the color, and to enjoy mezzo pieces is necessary a much thicker voice: just compare her Dalila with that of Obrastzova, for example.
But surely thats just a variation within vocal grouping? I mean you have dramatic soprano's and light sopranos - so isn't the difference between Obrastzova and Garanca just a difference like that?
Yes, there are more dramatic and dense mezzos (Obrastzova,Verret)and lighter ones (Baltsa,Berganza),and darker tones (Podles),coloratura (Horne), Light sopranos,CAN sing more dramatic roles, and may sound NICE, but it's not enjoyable. Some sopranos sing mezzo roles (Callas!), and viceversa (Bumbry!),but mezzos need thicker middle voice than Garanca's which simply seems too thin (at least in these recordings) to be enjoyable in mezzo roles... Thanks for raising such interesting subject
Well, I can't assure that, because I haven't heard her in person, but I tend to think that she should choose more soprano roles, yet maybe she feels more confortable in these mezzo roles, or her managers take those decisions. Take a look at my own videos(adriano104), you'll see that I sing baritone, bass and even tenor pieces, because I'm not professional and can afford singing whatever I like and feel confortable with, which maybe is not the case with Garanca (but obviously I'm not as good!)
for the first time in the history of youtube two people have had a discussion about singers that didn't end up in a pissing contest. thanks for that! it makes watching opera on youtube a nicer (and indeed more educational) experience.
Thanks a lot for your positive comment. In fact, I enjoy listening to singers and all types of voices in various repertoires. To me, singing and music in general is the most wonderful thing in the world, and therefore I also enjoy discussing various aspects and examples of voices and performances, but try to be respectful to other people's opinions, since after all, it's an art and every person has his own sesitivity, experience and opinions..Thanks again
Brava Elina!!!! FYI suzanneetmoi, Bartoli will NEVER put this role away, because she's been just amazing in this role, no other singer can possible sing this coloratura and rapid divisions as she does, true virtuosity, no matter you like her or not. Poor Cecilia, always the target of so much criticism... well, Callas was too...
Lovely! I can't wait to see the Met's production. Her voice is heaver than Joyce DiDonato- whom I adore- but it's sure great to see a mezzo with real power behind her voice "Sing out' . Makes one wish that Bartoli would put the role away forever...

@Sochilinda Yeah it is reasonable, i think it , too. I think, she never was a coloratura. Btw. it is amazing that she could sing many coloratura roles despite she is soprano. I was just saying that her technics is very good. Im not surprised that it difficult to her. Because it is very difficult (or impossible) for a lyrics-dramatic soprano. Its understandable.
