  • Does anybody know what note (including octave) is sung at 2:46?

  • how well did he sing the lieder part of the competition in cardiff ? Does anybody know ?

  • Flanders is a province within the area where Holland is today.

Hvorostovsky' voice is sheer velvet and his breath control the wonder of every critic in the world. I have seen him many times on the stage but in particular I saw him in Vienna singing this role in a great production about 8 years ago and even though he sang this aria lying all crumpled up on the floor the breath control was still amazing. Miraculous.

  • Who is Flanders?

  • Rodrigo is as tough as nails. No one can play him like Dimitri! Bravo!

  • Can hardly believe it's now nearly 20 years since he won that competition. Heard him recently in this very role and was moved to tears. It is good to see how he has continued to develop both vocally and artistically. His acting is a lot better too. A really wonderful artist.

  • Great voice and interpretation. Dmitri is a perfectionist

  • Let me just say that I love Bryn Terfel, but this is just out of this WORLD! Man, the year of the baritiones, eh? I can believe it!

  • His voice is so natural; he's becoming my favorite baritone. Herlea is great too though...

  • Agh... his breath support is impeccable.

    I want it!

  • Did Hvorostovsky win Cardiff Singer of World Competition in '89? With this performance I would think he earned it.

  • Actually, Bryn Terfel won it that year over Dimitri. That was probably the greatest showdown in the history of any singing competition.

  • My mistake. Bryn won the Lieder singer price and Dmitri won the overall best singer price in the 89 Cardiff Singers of the World

  • Does anyone Knows the aria name?

  • "O Carlo, Ascolta"

  • God, how BEAUTIFUL!

  • Dear Ankhsanammon, If you really want to win over this Ubermensche, then you'll have to take more than his breath on your body. Just lose all of your inhibitions.....and Brace Yourself

  • the best baritone with difference nowadays

  • I want to take his breath on my body

  • LOL. You're funny.

  • amazing...it's unfortunate he's only gotten worse (though hes still one of the best baritones of our generation)

  • "one of the best" get a grip of yourself. This is the world's greatest baritone since De Luca who died in 1950. Please let me know who you think is better for me to enjoy.

  • I never heard it sung better - not even by Dimitri himself ! Was Cardiff competition actually his best ever performance ? I'm shocked at how good he was in his youth.

  • for to hear it sung better, please listen to nicolae Herlea. He was the sole baritone to can defeat DH in this romanza.

  • Well, yes I do like the herlea version very much. I I still prefer Hvorostovsky here - I'm not sure I can explain why, for some reason this version always reduces me to tears.

  • superb!!, he should have an oxigen bottle near by, just in case!!, lol, I think he was more expresive then.

  • I think I might have to agree with you about him being more expressive.

  • I think so too. He seemed more expressive back then.

  • 1989 Caerdydd Centre of the musical wold just because Dmitri actually won! Fantastic memory!!

  • WOW!!! GREAT PERFORMANCE. The man never takes a breath.

Never seen this clip. Thanks for sharing.
