@xtmreef Absolutely! In fact i have heard it said that the strongest waves/currents that Acroporas can withstand, cannot be replicated in a home aquarium!
Very nice setup by the way, allthough the wave frequency seems a little... fast?
Did you do this because you researched your fish's specific origin and local ocean currents, or is this something you did because of conjecture, and you though it would be cool?
That's awesome. Had me worried at first about the constant force pushing against the sides, but then I noticed your tank is acrylic. Have you noticed a difference in the healthy of your corals and fish? I might approach something similar once I switch my glass tank to an acrylic tank.
I understand your statement about actual currents on a reef but actual currents and waves travel in one direction for a long period of time not for 2 seconds and then switch direction, oscar is absolutely right this may not kill the fish but is good for the fish because all it is going to do is confuse them
and yes i have i live in nz and go the the pacific reefs all the time and deep sea dive here new zealand thank you very much the reason y it needs 2 be slower its becoz they can get sea sick and if you have been snorkeling you would know that its graceful and calm but not up and down up and down realy fast but they have alot of force im just saying in a word of advice thnks
great choice of music for this vid! They say plants respond to music. I wonder if you were to always play music to your corals that matched the beat of the waves if you could create some kind of super coral that can sing and dance!
Very cool project. Is it beneficial to the fish to have waves or is it just really cool? If it is beneficial for your fish could it also be good for fresh water fish too?
This is very cool. I have a couple questions though.
1. Is it possible to build a variant where the box is added externally in some fashion?
2. Do you have to worry about your live rock positioning with this kind of setup? (I want to stack my rock high on the sides so it makes a giant U and can be viewed from either face)
your smart and very creative this thing is awesome . I think i would like to build one what kind of electronics do i need to get to make the pump turn on and off so fast like you have it. great job
Damn, that is badass! Take a patent out on that thing B4 some1 steals your idea. U can make millions! Can U imagine all the fish tank owners buying this thing? But, but, but U need a manager! Yeah! Thats it! U need some1 2 help U spend that loot! Ooops, I mean protect your interests! lol Great idea though...
i would suggest that you put a canopy or anything to hide the surface of the water. its quite iritating to see the water go up and down. hide it man. i would just love seeing corals sway but not the surface water. it gives me headache watching the water. lol. Just a suggestion dude. ^^,
that is bad ass. i just posted a poor mans diy surge device for anyone interested. although it isn't nearly this nice it does work well for what it is. cheers.
That has got to be some of the best wave action I have EVER seen. Please post a link to a DIY or send me a PM with how you set it up. Would be even better if it was externally mounted and would be VERY easy to accomplish that!!!
uhhhh hows the glass do with this thing? constant pressure on either side cant be too good. is it re-enforced?

just to let you know, the creatures you have in the tank do not actually experience this wave shit in nature. havent you watch finding nemo. lmao.
MrJimbobwae 1 year ago
@MrJimbobwae :: You're right, they don't. They experience MUCH larger and stronger waves in the wild.

Is the wave like that only for video purposes, or do you keep the wave that high full time?
Also, how thick is the acrylic?
lionsroaar 2 years ago
The wave is like that 24/7, just like in the wild. Sorry I can't remember how thick the acrylic was.

its going way 2 fast u will need 2 make it slower u will give the sea sick and die it needs 2 be smooth

Coral and anemonies need water flow, otherwise, they die quite fast. Good job on providing a good home for your coral!

Sure, if you have an acrylic tank you can simply build an external box for it. No worries about the live rock placement.

If you have movement in the water does that generate oxygen for the fish? I mean do you still need a oxygen bubble tube thing?

Read up on dissolved oxygen. You don't need bubble things for a reef tank or any tank.
