Aggiungo anche fra i pregi di quest'esecuzione:la ricerca di piani sonori suggestivi dal ppp al ff conclusivo, la purezza di molti attacchi (che bello: "O della madre...") e l'omogeneità timbrica(acuto escluso).Sentite come la voce rimane in posizione "alta" anche quando scende nel registro grave. Peccato per il fraseggio di cui parlavo prima, perchè determina un effetto di affaticamento probabilmente dovuto a condizioni fisiche non ottimali. La tecnica rimane comunque veramente straordinaria!

I limiti di quest'esecuzione non vanno quindi individuati nella spinta eccessiva del suono o nel colore troppo leggero, ma nel fraseggio troppo frammentato (le frasi sono quasi tutte interrotte in modo brusco) e nell'acuto finale un po'stridente e schiacciato(difetto caratteristico del registro acuto della Scotto della maturità artistica).Non mancano gli aspetti molto positivi: il colore vocale tutto "in maschera" e perfettamente a fuoco, la musicalità eccellente e l'interpretazione scavata.

Quest'aria non è eseguita dalla Scotto all'interno del contesto globale dell'opera,ma in un concerto,il processo di "liricizzazione" del brano può starci.Certamente la Scotto non possiede una vocalità dal peso idoneo a ricoprire il ruolo nella sua integralità,ma quest'aria è molto famosa ed inserita spesso nei recital di soprani lirici o addirittura lirico-leggeri.Tra l'altro non mi sembra affatto che tenda ad appesantire,privilegiando piuttosto la sfumatura e l'alleggerimento del suono.

You're not being fair guys.Renata was already way past her prime when singing this. So confronting THIS performance to the other sopranos is simply unfair. In her prime she sang this better. Still, even in this video you see that she masters the aria. BRAVISSIMA!

@hwhap13 it is always unfair to compare sopranos. they are each different an they approach their music in different manners with different interpretations. Is like comparing Monet with Rembrandt. fortunately they continue singing despite the narrow-minds of the peanut gallery. When I read the critics here, I wonder how in the hell any of them could ever stand on stage.

Interesting to watch the videos of different divas doing Ebben to see what each of them is doing with her hands while she is on stage while singing this song of a woman about to be kicked out of her town into the snow. Renata seems to doing the aria as a concert piece--not much getting into the actual role of the tragic lady. Just an opinion. But I do like her singing.

What year was this? I love Scotto to death, but this must've come after her foray into the heavier roles.

This was taped on October 16th 1977 and aired live.

I saw it in a big screen at La Scala for the tribute to Callas who had died a month before.

Also Jessie Norman and Ileana Cotrubas sang 2 arias (Damnation of Faust and Traviata if I remember correctly) live from 2 other Theatres.

Scotto sounds like the frog who tries to become a bull to me, notwithstanding some beautiful phrase....
