my teacher had told our class this story about christmas during wwII, and how the americans were in there trenches and so were the germans with no mans land in between, a german got up and started singing holy night in german, then an american got up and sang in english, everyone got out of their trenches and would trade goods, the next day they continued the war, might not be true but it could've happened

i love stories like this. its part of the insanity of war, fraternization between rival armies. in the american civil war it occured frequently out of sight, bands of soldiers or officers of each army meeting up to exchange things or trade things. both of the world wars are full of stories like this. its oddly encouraging too, in the right moments, at the right times. its very human.
