I'm a kitesurfer and can tell you he pops off the water and the kite gives him lift just before he hits the boat, so he was trying to jump over it and didn't make it. If you let the bar go, the kite will depower and fall out the sky, if he releases the kite by using a quick release system on his leash, the kite will detatch from him. It was a controlled jump but misjudged.

@malcolm2833 actually, you can let go... they have a safty feature so when you let go of the bar it releases tension on the kite causing it to go limp and fall into the water ready to go when your ready again... otherwise these things would be deadly... picking people up and throwing them into shallow water where they could die... and they would be banned from beaches withing hours of the first death.

You don't need to use arms only. Modern power kites have safety releases instantly killing the power while still bungied to the kiter. But he was probably trying to turn or edge away at the last moment and didn't make it.

Here is my question for the experienced kite surfers? Do you have to use a harness vs. just your arms. If so, would it be safer since you can just let go of the kite easily.

Thats depower kite and you have to use your harnes to controll power of the kite by moving bar.You can go unhooked but thats more for freestyle and its a murder for your arms during the long session.

I can comply as a responsible kiteboarder, that the kiteboarder is 100% irresponsable and wrong. You should never try to pass through two moving boats..... and if you can see in the video, they are running at a moderate speed. That increases the risk.
