thump the root note with your thumb, pop the perfect 4, 5th, octave (etc), use hammer ons and pull-offs to cover up a lack of technical speed and change up the on-off pattern of slaps and pops. rinse and repeat. with a good drummer it does sound good and is great fun, but it's not as hard or impressive as it sounds. if you're just starting out popping and slapping is the easiest way to sound like you have some skill.
