I agree that Opeth is good band. . .but personally I am not into "growling" songs but I still think his regular singing voice is good.
I always thought that most growling bands do so because they can't sing worth S**t but in case of Opeth I cannot say that because they can sing and they can play good music.
I doubt you know how to do either properly because people devote their entire lives to singing, and it takes years to do it "properly" and its immensely difficult to growl properly, which also takes years but is not "harder" Growling is an accent to singing, unfortunately only a few bands, like Opeth, realize its not a substitute.
No offence i love growling and im a metal head but i garuntee u singing is harder to master...look at opera singers mate...singing regularly would be easier.

What a song. There's a band on myspace i found called trampled under hoof who are similar. Unbelievably heavy and some really beautiful acoustic parts.
That's the first song they played when I saw them on this tour too. But there is absolutely no way you would have been able to film them from this angle in Quebec City; this spot in front of the stage was a total mosh pit!

opeth is one of the most talented metal bands i've heard, they are very are very technical, have amazing melodies, and sounds like the album when they play live.

I'll definitely see them on November 27 in Paris. Awesome band from the very start to Watershed. I just got my hands on Deliverance today, which is one of the rare Opeth albums I hadn't fully listened to so far, it's awesome as always.
My favorite Opeth song. This song maybe isn't better than other Opeth songs, but it's the most cohesive and the one that flows better, even if it's ten minutes long!
However, if Opeth is emo, then what to say about Pain Of Salvation? Let's simply call Opeth prog death or extreme prog metal.

Opeth is far from heavy metal. Growls, and heavy sounds do not equal metal. The compositions are based on full chords and very pop-like easy listening melodies. Only unique qualities that they have, is their nerdy fanboy like fans, and very akward sounding arrangements within their songs...
No, i've actually seen the band twice live, and liked what is saw. Even happen to own couple of their records. This is just an honest objective opinion, and i would say hell of a lot relevant then lets say, someone who thinks this is really the best band in the world and owns every Opeth thing that is there on sale. I am not an fanboy, so i can look at this band relisticly.
i am far from a fanboy, as i like many kinds of musical genres, but to say that they have awkward arrangements... you are not being fair, seriously. It's not just my opinion, see the critics about the band, or about this record (Ghost Reveries), they get good critics even from some very biased sites like Pitchfork. Although this does not mean much, it is a indicator that the band does a good job, and i at least like it. You may dislike the band, but they are NOT bad musicians or composers.

Death growls, metal instruments (including perhaps the most important: distortion guitar) that are used very metal-like (fast bass and drums for example) and most of all.. sounding metal don't make Opeth heavymetal? My favorite Opeth song. This song maybe isn't better than other Opeth songs, but it's the most cohesive and the one that flows better, even if it's ten minutes long!
However, if Opeth is emo, then what to say about Pain Of Salvation? Let's simply call Opeth prog death or extreme prog metal.
Another thing, why people say that Opeth are sellouts now? They haven't become a nu-metal band and their new albums are as good as their old ones: this song is the fucking evidence of this! Opeth for life!

Opeth is far from heavy metal. Growls, and heavy sounds do not equal metal. The compositions are based on full chords and very pop-like easy listening melodies. Only unique qualities that they have, is their nerdy fanboy like fans, and very akward sounding arrangements within their songs...

No, i've actually seen the band twice live, and liked what is saw. Even happen to own couple of their records. This is just an honest objective opinion, and i would say hell of a lot relevant then lets say, someone who thinks this is really the best band in the world and owns every Opeth thing that is there on sale. i am far from a fanboy, as i like many kinds of musical genres, but to say that they have awkward arrangements... you are not being fair, seriously. It's not just my opinion, see the critics about the band, or about this record (Ghost Reveries), they get good critics even from some very biased sites like Pitchfork. Although this does not mean much, it is a indicator that the band does a good job, and i at least like it. You may dislike the band, but they are NOT bad musicians or composers.

Death growls, metal instruments (including perhaps the most important: distortion guitar) that are used very metal-like (fast bass and drums for example) and most of all.. sounding metal don't make Opeth heavymetal? Also combining stuff from various styles and many different types of parts in one song doesn't make it progressive either, I guess. Yeah, you make perfect sense there. Opeth is obviously pop!

Neither is "I'm a puritan" a viable argument for anything.
