tonsillectony would be most often for children, not adults... he in face has sleep apnea, just by looking at him and hearing him this is not a problem with his tonsils
Hello, I would like to ask if you consider tonsillectomy? my son now 11 yrs old had removal of his tonsils 2 yrs ago, because of his apnea he can't no longer breathe and he wakes up every 5 mins. and if this continues until he's an adult he will have heart ailments and other disorder related to his sleeping problem. Right now he's okay and no more gagging and waking up. Surgery helped him.
@jacquibuenaflor Thanks for your comment about tonsillectomy. We actually did look into this -- however, the bad news is that the older a person gets, the more complicated and serious a tonsillectomy becomes....causing severe risks for the person. Nick doesn't want to risk it -- and now that he has his CPAP machine, he's happy and doing well.
My dad has been like this forever...its definitely not fun to watch. He has a C-Pap machine but RARELY uses it EVEN tho he says he gets a better nightsd sleep with it. He also has restless-leg syndrom so my poor mom wakes up with him kicking her all the time lol...
@Flygrl48 I really hope your dad will use his CPAP machine!! Please show him this video -- or better yet -- take a video of him so he can see how scary this is for everyone. When Nick watched this video for the first time, he freaked out and made the appointment for the sleep study.
@leahthegeek Sad thing is I have shown him what he looks like. he will wear his machine for like a couple weeks maybe, then he just "doesnt feel like it" because he doesnt like it sitting over his nose, but its really not uncomfortable and its a small price to pay to be healthier, and sleep and function better throughout the day. Hes actually passed out and fell off the bed because he was gasping and could breathe and woke him up like he was choking. Very scary, but ive been trying for sure!
ive just been diagnosed with sleep apnea and im just waiting for my appointment for the cpap,,i was just wondering as well as helping u to breathe does it help with the snoring too
@sab82100 Hi there! Good for you for getting tested for Sleep Apnea! Yes yes yes!! The CPAP machine provides an air "splint" in your throat which stops the soft folds of skin from vibrating and making the snoring noise. Nick doesn't snore at all now that he uses CPAP therapy! Good luck!
my husband is also on the sleep apnea mask it really sucks to him he stop breathing 89 times in an hour he changes mask often not really a happy camper but the snoring and he stop breathing really scary to me cant hardley here him when he talkswith it on but he's doing fine with it even he doesnt like it
@MrsJbone66 I'm glad he keeps trying. Sometimes you have to get fitted for different masks -- when you find the mask that's right for you, it'll make a big difference in his life! Good luck!
I have severe sleep apnea and based from sleep study I stop breathing 99 times per hour. It affected my work and it is hard for me to concentrate. Now I have the CPAP machine and I am happy that I got it because I do my work better. Don't take this lightly because I've learned my lesson the hard way and I should have taken the machine years ago.
Yeah I have the same problem I been going through since 03 and got mad by the fact I have to use a mask now im barely starting to use because it was gettong the point were I couldnt function
@MrArmandito3000 I'm sorry that you're having such a bad time -- but I'm glad that you're still trying. Using your CPAP therapy is really important...and sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error. Keep trying though. Good luck! : )
@iammike08 Oh, I totally know what you mean and what you're going through! I also have a machine and I used to get blisters on the bridge of my nose. I tried moleskin and band aids -- but, for me, I just had to "break in" my mask -- and adjust adjust adjust -- I had to adjust my pillows, my headgear, the angle of the forehead piece, etc. I even tried different kinds of masks. I settled on a full-face mask -- but Nick has one that just goes into his nostrils. Good luck!
I run sleep studies and I always tell my patients to ask there ENT or Pulmonary DR. why they have apnea. CPAP treats the apena during the event only. If you find out why you have it then you can treat that also and may not have to use a CPAP mask... (im not an MD tho)
@831truluv you should win a medal! I'm 30 years old female, and just had been diagnosed with sleep apnoea, my consultant took me straight for the CPAP treatment, and even me telling that i feel complicated to breath while i'm awake, he said that i seem to breath ok for him. I wish i could find the CAUSE of my OSA and go and treat it, instead of do the healing of the whole situation. I even asked about surgery and he said: No, majority people does surgery and it doesnt solve the problem. Grrrr
Sheesh poor guy! Look at him stimulating himself (rubbing his head and rolling over) to try to stay awake enough to breathe, and gasping for air. My husband sleeps with a CPAP too - it's made a WORLD of difference for him. I'm glad Nick got one too - sleep apnea is nothing to mess around with!

@mirzaortiz1 I am so glad that you watched it. Please show your husband. Nick didn't believe me -- so I had to video it. It is so hard to watch...you just want to yell BREATHE!! He has had his CPAP machine for a few years now -- and he's doing great!
@hrbear He has lost a lot of weight since this video -- but he still has the sleep apnea. Not all sleep apnea is due to weight. He has really massive tonsils -- and he's really too old to have them out. The CPAP machine really helps. He's doing great!
@leahthegeek Weight loss isn't a magic cure. I've had undiagnosed sleep apnea (finally diagnosed just recently!) for about 10 years... even when I was extremely fit and skinny I had it... so yeah. Even simply being MALE increases the chance.
@mirzaortiz1 A close friend of mine also has sleep apnea. He refuses that he has the problem, or he jccepts that he snores only. His case is worst than Nicks. He also does sudden movements, he makes some sounds like he suffers much and he sees bad dreams too. His sleep is "light" due to the problem, the result is that he needs to sleep more, he feels sleepy and tired during the day. He weights 140 Kgs. The problem is the overweight, and he is not a strong character to start and hold a diet.
This is just like my dad. He has been snoring like this for years now. He's also a smoker. I should record him and show him so we can get help. Thanks for posting.
@BEARTRAP037 Thank you so much for your kind comments. This video is actually featured in France and Australia and on several doctor blogs -- to show others just how severe sleep apnea is. This video leaves me holding my breath and gasping for him. I love this man so much and his CPAP machine has been a life-saver!!

@77Monaro: Overweight CAN be a factor in OSA. (It is not the only factor, some skinny people have OSA too.) But here's an important part too: Having OSA can keep you overweight! (You could eat wrong, your body never gets the actual rest it needs, etc.)
Girl I don't know how you put up with that LOL well did he get the machine? My Dad has the same problem and uses the machine and it's a life saver for everyone including him cuz he stops breathing. My Step Mom checked to make sure he was still alive the first nite he used it cuz it was so quiet!
I'm so blown away to watch this - my test showed I stop breathing dozens of times an hour =( I am getting my CPAP machine very soon and I can't wait. This is no laughing matter. Well done you guys and thank you so much for doing this video. I really wanted to see an example of what I look like trying to get sleep =(
Cool vid.. Wish more of my patients would do this so they knew just how bad they truly were... Glad to see he made it through the test and is using a cpap.. It'll save his life. :)
this was me also, I got a CPAP after a sleep study a couple months ago and I feel SO MUCH BETTER all day its unbelievable, plus my blood pressure went down.
He didn't have surgery...he got a CPAP machine and it changed his life! If you read the other comments, you'll see. -- And it's not fake. It's very very real.
My boyfriend has slep apnea and I'm getting ready to send him packing. What you were dealing with is nothing like what I'm dealing with. His breathing stops for much longer, he shakes, starts talking in his sleep, sits up and rocks back and forth and it is much louder. I was poking and shaking the bed in an effort to get him to roll over, but nothing helps. Now I have resorted to saying things that I later regret. Its a nightmare and so unsafe for him to be dealing with.
OMg i can beleive im like that i got like 75 event/hour and i just got my cpap today i cant wait to feel the result. i need 12.5cm/h2o. but i got a question did u found hard to get used to the mask? I got a nasal mask cus i cant stand the nosetrill inserts. And in how much time did you see some results?
P.S.sorry for my bad english but im used to speak french.
It does take some time to get used to using the CPAP machine and even after seven years I still have times when my mask doesn't feel right. I only started using mine on a regular basis when I got pregnant because I didn't want to cut off the oxygen to my unborn son. My son is now six years old and healthy.
Now I can't sleep without my machine and mask.
It could take several weeks or months of regular use to feel the difference.
Nick, I hope you have seen a specialist. This is painful to watch. I found myself taking deep breaths! It reminds me of my sweetie Dave but Dave is more restless.
70 lbs! Nick Rocks! Tell him congrats from Karen in California. My honey Dave and I saw a Doctor yesterday and he will be going for a sleep study soon I hope but he is not keen on wearing a cpap machine. If Dave could lose 30lbs I think he'd feel much better. Keep up the good work Leah. I am sure you were behind getting Nick's health headed in the right direction.
Thanks!! Yes, I WAS killing him with all of my nudges and kicks and gentle (and not so gentle) "Breathe!" -- I had to take this video to proove it to him (he was in crazy denial over it all) Thanks so much for the comments!! Keep me posted on how Dave does. If he has any questions about the process, let me know. It was completely life changing -- All the best to you! xoxoxo
I found for myself in any event, when I exercised and lost weight (about 20 lbs. in my case) my sleep apnea problem improved quite a bit. As I understand it, I snore less now as well.
Wow. That is some bad apnea. Holy cow.

Good luck.

Nick, I hope you have seen a specialist. This is painful to watch. I found myself taking deep breaths! It reminds me of my sweetie Dave but Dave is more restless.

Thank you, he has. He's also lost about 70 lbs -- still has sleep apnea -- but he's doing great with his CPAP machine.

70 lbs!

It was completely life changing -- All the best to you! xoxoxo

Did the doctors tell him to lose some lbs? Could eliminate his sleep apnea.

I found for myself in any event, when I exercised and lost weight (about 20 lbs. in my case) my sleep apnea problem improved quite a bit. As I understand it, I snore less now as well.
