I think Ken wanted to bow out from what I can gather about his facial expression, gestures, and acknowledgment of the facts at hand. I think he made up his mind if before he got a popular Joker spin. I do not think he wanted to play FF. The odds are bad and he wanted to save the embarrassment. Although he never admitted it on the show to Barry and the audience. If he openly admitted he didn't want to play FF would mean he was a poor sport . I bet that is why he didn't want to admit it.
Although given how Ken was essentially shut out of the game, it wouldn't have been likely he'd have gotten 10 or 11 question correct in a row, w/no misses...however, there were a few contestants who spun FF for $50 and went on to win by correctly answering 10 in a row, so who knows...
So why did the audience applause when jack said AND A Triple even though if he took the category he would lose.. The audience was just as doofuses as the contestant was.. Even Jack was reluctant to say ANd a triple.. but I guess he always says and a triple no matter what if it comes up
It was hard to hear exactly what happened. Did he select a category off the board causing him to lose? I didnt hear a buzzer go off or anything indicating he took too much time to decide if he wanted that category or not.
The idea was that he had to take the Fast Forward Trivia category to try to catch up. He could have chosen it with the Joker, but he forgot that he had it and said "$200", indicating that he was taking The World of Music, which was not enough to catch up.
@gameshowguy2000 Actually, what "fast forward" always allowed you to do is answer as many questions as you can, so you could theoretically win if you answer 10 correctly for a total of $500. If you miss one, however, you lose everything you earned on that turn.
I would have to say that it is possible he didn't want to humiliate himself. I remember this happened on at least one other occasion when I watched this show as a kid, and never thought it was done on purpose to save humiliation.
OK. If you get a "Joker" on the wheel, you can go 'off the board' and pick one of the other categories in play for that game. In order for him to possibly tie/win the game, he would have had to use that joker to select the 'fast forward' category for $50 each (one joker wheel) and answer at least 10 questions. However, Jack had to accept his first decision of "World of Music" for $200, which is not enough to catch up on that spin.
I'm sure of this episode's airdate, but I think it was aired between March and Jim Peck's second shot of filling in for Jack in May 1983 did I get this correct? If not, then SonicWhammy I think it's that Digital Cable volume that you manually made the audio of your tape running low.
Actually, my wife's late uncle taped this for me years ago, and he didn't know you could raise the volume on the cable box. We fixed the problem on later tapes he made for me.
It's happened more than once. Even I would've known that the only way to stay in the game is to take the category and come up with 10 correct answers in a row. Even Jack mentioned that the only way to go is the fast forward category before the moron spun the wheels!
What a dope! Now this idiot knows better that he could go off the board with the Joker, although the Fast Forward Triva category would have started off at $50. Now that is what I call a game show suicide.

I think the applause was canned, and just used whenever someone spun a triple.

Wait..if he used the Joker and took Fast Foward Trivia, that would've only paid $50.
gameshowguy2000 3 years ago
It would've paid $50 per correct answer. He could've answered 10 questions for a tie or 11 for a win.
