I have aquestion, is he really cripple? I mean in the begining of the film they have a women saying she's a cripple she'll never dance again, so help me understand is he a cripple and if not why crutches?
I think it more amazing when a man with no legs at all can perform a whole breakdance routine on crutches, that's even more empowering. I wouldn't go as far to say that Shannon was great, it was ok.
oakleaman. know your history. repeat after me. the roots of hiphop are not simply "black" they are inner city urban. black and latino.. and the occasional white kid. "a lot less white" is way more accurate than simply saying "black" when speaking about early 80's hiphop dance. loser!
'loser'? Me?!? Was that off the top too? Or did you consider that the retort of a champion? Is this the point where I call you 'dorkface!' or sumthin'?
I was about to commend you on your wiki-inspired historical breakdown, only to realise that you are indeed Mr. Shannon himself, so in which case I'd say, like you Bill, I know my history.. but this ain't about a slanging match at all..
i called you a loser because instead of making a comment that was about the content whether a question or a critique. you came off with a patronizing and mocking attack. like im scared to say something is "black" and your going to help me say it.
What I'm talking about here are the politics of [accurate] representation and cultural ownership. By cultural ownership I mean being able to accept and acknowledge both creators and participants without bias or agenda. Do you really believe that a "lot less white" suggests 'black and latino.. and the occasional white kid'?? You don't have to tell me the truth, but I know there's a priest/rabbi/whoever, out there right now ready to take your call!
i can speak about whiteness because its who i am. a white man. i can say hiphop was alot less white because i know it was. i cant say hiphop was black because then i am denying the contributions (from the beginning) of other races. latin asian and others.
so you see. i speak of who i am from what i know about the cultures i grew up in. you think your going to help me speak my truth and tell me what i meant to say was hiphop was "black" but just could not get it out? your dead wrong.
back then was crazy legs.. little lep.. handiman.. mr wiggles . none of these were "participants" nor were they black. since you know your history who taught mike the moonwalk? was he black? no. black people deserve the lions share of credit for the birth of hiphop culture but never blanket credit.
Culture is ownership, be it owned by one, two or two million. Culture by the definition of ownership is inherently precious. Homogenized culture is fashion, and when fashion dies while taking culture with it, we end up with a f*cked up situation, i.e. the current state of we might call hip-hop/hip-hop 'culture' today...
..and did I see you use the term 'inner city urban'?!? Bill, Bill, Bill! The day that contrived industry categorisation becomes the standard vernacular of those with a genuine love of hip-hop music then we might as well hang out the white flags and come out with our black, latino and occasionally white a*ses showing. I think you get what I'm sayin'. Your work suggests a genuine love, which is why I've taken the time to view this bad-boy in the first place.
we are no longer black and latino and occasionally white that era is gone. you seem to confuse the context of time in relation to what i said. i grew up inner city blue collar urban / hiphop and punk rock were there and in the burbs too but i experienced them as the city. the politics of accurate representation begins with the speaker. this was me talking about my experience not an historical overview of the politics of representation in hiphop and dare i say it youth culture.
i dont hate. calling someone a loser for posting up a condescending and patronizing post is not hate. your original post was very arrogant and you have not acknoweldged that at all. if you want to raise consciousness .start with kindness
yer but im just asking the qu, why he think that it is surprising that people want to help him up when hes 'collapsed' to the floor mid dance. How are they to know he is a dancer? and why does he feel he can judge them for this? bizarre..
I'd never seen your work before today. Great stuff. Don't let idiots upset you. Remember the golden rule: normal guy + anonymity + audience = jabbering internet fuckwad.
If you're performing in the UK any time soon I'm there.
if my reification leaves you nonplussed I suggest you hit up dictionarydotcom .. the biggest word I used was spatiotemporal. the only word I know that treats space+time as one idea.
Sorry, I should have been more clear, I was actually referring to phobia 47's comment "what this guy accomplished is awesome.. but his documentary makes him come off as a tool."
... Well, I guess I am more ready to believe someone is hating on me than backing me up. what does that say about me.. my mistake. anyway..im a 80s head too.. a bit worn out on the rebirth. respect.
My friend Shannon, since Jordan 1999 and I am looking for U, God bless you my friend, please contact as soon as you can, unique_romance35@yahoo.com
