@BBEEAANN1 i think you are giving the SH a bit too much credit, from first hand experience, it cant do 1/4 of what the tomcat could do. the F-14D was a beast, and most certainly very effiecient at doing it's job, i only wish that the planned F-14E quickstrike would have continued, with it's planned improvements such as lighter weight, more powerful 3D vectored thrust and reduced radar visibility, i think it would have easily been able to defeat the F-22, like it did everything else except F-15.
they actually aren't looking for alternatives. The Royal Navy/Royal Air Force requested the F-35B and cancelled it... For the F-35C. It's not a waste of resources, you haven't even seen it in combat yet, so I wouldn't talk shit before you even see something in actual combat.

@GameReviewer1987 the f-14 wins because it can easily outfight the mirage, it flies high than the mirage can, faster than the mirage can, turns tighter than the mirage can, has better weapons than the mirage did, the mirage did not have the power in it's engine for high g dogfighting like the tomcat did. that is only a few of the reasons why the tomcat greatly outclassed the mirage, just like it outclassed f-18 and f-16, it was on an even playing field with the f-15.
It may have outclassed the F/A-18 and the F-16 models. I don't think it outclassed the F/A-18/E Super hornet, or the F-15C. The Mirage would have a hard time beating most 4th generation american jets. But the mirage is still effective. It outclasses most soviet jets in use today (Like the Mig-21, Mig-25 and would be competition for the Mig-29). So, undoubtedly it's agood plane.
@GameReviewer1987 yes it did outclass the F/A-18 E & F superhornets, both models of it, and yes you are right the mirage can not beat the F-14 or the F-15, but it also outclassed the F/A-18, but held its own against the F-16, i did not say that it outclassed the F-15, i said they are both on an even playing field, both the F-14 and F-15 were as capable as each other, the F-15 has a very slight weight advantage over tomcat, but noticable on paper only, in the air they are equals.
Well on paper it's the stats that matter. On paper the F-35 looks horrid.
In actual performance it's better.
Because if you have a shitty Su-34 pilot vs the world's best pilot flying a Mig-15 then the mig-15 pilot can win. The stats of the plane on paper may look different that but the stats you see generally apply they don't take into account

@GameReviewer1987 although what you are saying is true, but only to a point, i would put my money on the average su-34 pilot over the best pilot on the planet in the mig 15, i have known some extremely good F/A-18 pilots, and i mean really good ones, and i could regularly beat them in any tomcat i would fly, now i was not a great tomcat pilot, i would honestly rate myself in the upper 25% of every person to have ever flown the tomcat, so the equipment does make a difference also.
@GameReviewer1987 but you are right i have also seen a very few of those exceptional hornet/superhornet pilots that could beat a few of the tomcat pilots with lesser abilities, but they really had to work hard for those wins and be able to overcome the tomcat's abilities. like i said i was not one of the best tomcat pilots, but i was far from being one of the worst as well, and i maintained a 94% win ratio over the hornet. so newer is not always better.
@BBEEAANN1 I worked for Grumman and that was going to be the Super Tomcat. Mach 3+ with the Aim 54 upgraded ALQ 100 radar, Would have been unmatched by any aircraft. But Boeing/McDonnell Douglas Had deeper pockets in congress and one again the US fighting man took it in the shorts...Just like the KC-35 tanker deal..already $500 million in over runs and it hasn't even flown yet.

All in all it comes down to the same thing that causes changes throughout the military in general, cost effectiveness. It realy depend. Mirage 2000C and -5F are as you said, pure fighter, however as you probably know, Mirage 2000D & 2000N are definitely attack plane without air to air capacity (exept self defense weapons)
So don't say Mirage 2000 are fighters, it depend of the version !

At the beginning, Rafale was in the 4th generation. But after its confrontation with the F22 (1 for F22 and 5 equality), it was upgrad for "4++" generation (not 5 because it's not stealth).

Rafale identified and destroyed tragets with 30-40 km while it's usually made with 4-5 km.

first of all, the mirage, rafales, and f-16 are pretty much equal in when it comes down to it. Secondly, the pride and joy and what I would call the main fighter of the US airforce is the f-22. I'm not talking about numbers of planes in service. France has the eurofighter, which isn't French so it shouldn't really be considered, and it is still much worse than the f-22. The f-18 is better than the mirage and so is the f-15 for what it does. btw your welcome for WWII bailout frog.
Bottom line is when comparing these two aircraft, the f-14 is on of the United States' worste fighter jets in service, while the mirage is the main fighter jet of France.

It also handily defeated F-15's before they got upgrades to their avionics that Dick Chenney stopped the F-14 from getting. If the F-14 had gotten its upgrades there is nothing in the sky that would have been able to fly with it.

Is the F-22 "active stealth" ? No. It's stealth because of his shape. But you can change easily the shape of an aircraft. So, it will be detected in the near future.
Is the Rafale "active stealth" ? Yes. There's a "active stealth" system in SPECTRA. It's easy to update a system like that. It's only software and sensors.
The active stealth system receive the signal of the enemy radar and send a dephased signal. So the enemy radar can't detect the aircraft. The F-22 and the F-35 only use their shape to be stealth.
5th generation means nothing. It's just like if I call the Rafale a 6th generation aircraft. What more the F-22 has ? Nothing. And the Rafale can do air/ground missions. The F-22 can only use 2 JDAM, no laser-guided bombs, etc...

@GameReviewer1987 the f-14 wins because it can easily outfight the mirage, it flies high than the mirage can, faster than the mirage can, turns tighter than the mirage can, has better weapons than the mirage did, the mirage did not have the power in it's engine for high g dogfighting like the tomcat did. that is only a few of the reasons why the tomcat greatly outclassed the mirage, just like it outclassed f-18 and f-16, it was on an even playing field with the f-15.

It may have outclassed the F/A-18 and the F-16 models. I don't think it outclassed the F/A-18/E Super hornet, or the F-15C. The Mirage would have a hard time beating most 4th generation american jets. But the mirage is still effective. It outclasses most soviet jets in use today (Like the Mig-21, Mig-25 and would be competition for the Mig-29). So, undoubtedly it's agood plane.

@GameReviewer1987 yes it did outclass the F/A-18 E & F superhornets, both models of it, and yes you are right the mirage can not beat the F-14 or the F-15, but it also outclassed the F/A-18, but held its own against the F-16, i did not say that it outclassed the F-15, i said they are both on an even playing field, both the F-14 and F-15 were as capable as each other, the F-15 has a very slight weight advantage over tomcat, but noticable on paper only, in the air they are equals.

Well on paper it's the stats that matter. On paper the F-35 looks horrid.
In actual performance it's better.
Because if you have a shitty Su-34 pilot vs the world's best pilot flying a Mig-15 then the mig-15 pilot can win. The stats of the plane on paper may look different that but the stats you see generally apply they don't take into account
Weather, Pilot Skill, differences of parts (Some work better than others due to manufacturing conditions) and more.

@GameReviewer1987 although what you are saying is true, but only to a point, i would put my money on the average su-34 pilot over the best pilot on the planet in the mig 15, i have known some extremely good F/A-18 pilots, and i mean really good ones, and i could regularly beat them in any tomcat i would fly, now i was not a great tomcat pilot, i would honestly rate myself in the upper 25% of every person to have ever flown the tomcat, so the equipment does make a difference also.

@GameReviewer1987 but you are right i have also seen a very few of those exceptional hornet/superhornet pilots that could beat a few of the tomcat pilots with lesser abilities, but they really had to work hard for those wins and be able to overcome the tomcat's abilities. like i said i was not one of the best tomcat pilots, but i was far from being one of the worst as well, and i maintained a 94% win ratio over the hornet. so newer is not always better.

But Boeing/McDonnell Douglas Had deeper pockets in congress and one again the US fighting man took it in the shorts...Just like the KC-35 tanker deal..already $500 million in over runs and it hasn't even flown yet.

@BBEEAANN1 I agree with what you're saying, the Avionics on the F18 are far beond the F14 though, ive heard that straight from the horses mouth, the guys that fly them. All in all it comes down to the same thing that causes changes throughout the military in general, cost effectiveness. Im sure i dont have to tell you the flight to mantainence ratios the 14's had compared to the 18's.
It's a shame theyre gone , were better of with them, the jerks that sign all the money away arent.

It realy depend. Mirage 2000C and -5F are as you said, pure fighter, however as you probably know, Mirage 2000D & 2000N are definitely attack plane without air to air capacity (exept self defense weapons)
So don't say Mirage 2000 are fighters, it depend of the version !

That delta wing bleeds mach so bad that after a couple three jinks he's pressed into a low-speed fight way behind cornor speed. Game over. Rafale is by far the superior knife-fighter, and with superior avionics to boot, does the BVR mission more effectively as well.
Look for the Mirage 2000 fleet to start trickling into lower tier air forces as front line outfits try to ditch that sled.

first of all, the mirage, rafales, and f-16 are pretty much equal in when it comes down to it. Secondly, the pride and joy and what I would call the main fighter of the US airforce is the f-22. I'm not talking about numbers of planes in service. France has the eurofighter, which isn't French so it shouldn't really be considered, and it is still much worse than the f-22. The f-18 is better than the mirage and so is the f-15 for what it does. btw your welcome for WWII bailout frog.

It also handily defeated F-15's before they got upgrades to their avionics that Dick Chenney stopped the F-14 from getting. @fable2omg You are comparing a a plane that is not even in service with the "Best" your country have to offer? Everybody knows the United States have the best pilots and planes in the world, its nice you love your planes and country but in a dog fight we would kick your ass back to the stone age :) plain and simple and even a jet as old as the tomcat can do it because a tomcat as old as it was couldve tracked 24 targets simultaneously and killed six as the same time your plane couldnt do that!

And I'm not french anyway, I love the tomcat, Tough airplane.
But I'm not sure if the american pilots *ARE* the best, I think the best pilots would come from Israel Seriously, Because their pilots have already seen action a lot of times. Even Red Flag can't totally prepare a pilot for the real stuff.

@fable2omg Helloooo every fighter aircraft have electronic counter measures in them try again and yes I am patriotic that is clear and also Red Flag is an Air Force combat exercise Tomcats are Navy and Navy pilots trained through the Top Gun school and Navy system which is different from the Air Force, Israeli pilots have more combat time but that does not necessarily make them the best ... I am looking around and Ive been around them thats why I can say when I am saying :)

1) Mirage 2000 is not the "best" our country can offer. It's the Rafale
2) Last year in the UAE, a Rafale virtually shot down a F-22 (thanks the EOS =) ). You can found the picture on Internet. Search for it
3) The F-22s are not allowed to fly due to a BIG problem with the OBOGS. Is it really your best plane ? =)
4) The Rafale is known as the Hornet-killer in the US Navy. I don't think that a little old cat will be a problem =)

And I will not admit what it's wrong. But I can admit that a F-22 was "shot down" by a Rafale and the photo is not photoshoped =)
During the lest Red Flag, the F-22s pilotes were crying because they were unabled to "kill" a Rafale. And you know why ? Because french ECM are the best in the world.
They were unable to lock on a Rafale, but our pilots were laughing when they were recording the AN/APG-77 signals.

Is the F-22 "active stealth" ? No. It's stealth because of his shape. But you can change easily the shape of an aircraft. So, it will be detected in the near future.
Is the Rafale "active stealth" ? Yes. There's a "active stealth" system in SPECTRA. It's easy to update a system like that. It's only software and sensors.

The F-22 hasn't both, only passive.
The active stealth system receive the signal of the enemy radar and send a dephased signal. So the enemy radar can't detect the aircraft. The F-22 and the F-35 only use their shape to be stealth.
5th generation means nothing. It's just like if I call the Rafale a 6th generation aircraft. What more the F-22 has ? Nothing. And the Rafale can do air/ground missions. The F-22 can only use 2 JDAM, no laser-guided bombs, etc...

Now, WW2. Just one example : battle of Monte Cassino. The americans were unable to defeat the germans so they called the french. Then the germans had to retreat.
Oh, and where were the aircrafts that we have bought in 1939 ? You know, P-40, etc... ?
We gave the money but we NEVER saw a P-40 coming from the US.
Oh and don't forget your independance war. Washington's army started to win battles ony when french soldiers arrived in America.

2) France was part of the Allied forces. battle of Bir Hakeim, battle of Monte Cassino, French Caraibs, Polynesia and equatorial Africa, etc... The Germans NEVER conquered ALL the french territory, so they NEVER won against us during WW2. That's why general Sevez in Reims and general De Lattre de Tassigny in Berlin signed the act of capitulation of Germany.
