I was told that the YZM400 works bike was entirely different than the production run yz400F the following year in 98. There are rumors that the yzm400 was actually 500cc and a 3 speed and not 400cc as the model number would suggest. The reason was because the AMA had not set an appropriate displacement limit for four strokes at that time.
@brentnowell Actually the limit for 4 strokes was 550cc displacement, with no weigh restrictions, only that it must weigh no less than the limits imposed on the 2 stroke 250cc. The 400 that Doug was riding had extensive carbon fiber / titanium. The fuel capacity was more than 2 stroke, and helped with his bike making 'weight'. After the race, in tech, I witnessed them drain almost a gallon of gas from his bike. The trans was in question, but he only shifted 2 gears throughout the race...
I remember watching the original air of this on ESPN 2...I had just gotten picked up by a local Yamaha shop sponsorship at the end of the last season & my dad was watching it with me & I remember my father saying "I've been saying it for 10 f-ing years!! you couldn't design an engine that pollutes more as it runs & that because of that, these are all gonna be 4-Strokes eventually" & me & my cousin who raced for a local Honda shop looked at him & were both like "Yeah, Whatever" & the 4-Stroke won
There's still good motocross, it's just at the amateur level now, since you can now race 250cc two stroke against 250cc fours strokes. The pro races just aren't as exciting anymore since it's limited to those with mega bucks, and the four strokes lack of powerband make the sport seem a lot less explosive.
$3000 rebuilds were the future of this sport at this time. Noise is the No.1 fault of the four stroke and tracks are closing everywhere now. Four strokes have really made this sport better.
Made the sport better? How? It takes less skill to go fast on a 450 four than a 250 two. The 450's are MUCH louder than the 250 twos. The deep fart sound caries much further. They are expensive to maintain, meaning less time racing for the privateers beacuse more money goes to repairs instead of upgrades. Nobody likes the sound of the 4 over the 2. The popularity of the sport has went down the crapper. Just think if nascar went to 4 cylinders with coffee can buzz exhaust.
in 1997 the works rules didnt exist for 4 strokes.. the AMA had little to go on, who thought a 4 stroke would put out that kind of power? Anytime someone said 4 stroke pre 1997 everyone thought XR250... Really cool era for motocross. Im happy to have been a racer durring that time. Doug is one of the best the sport has ever had. I had a chance to get in the gate with him at some local events back in the day. He was always a nice guy period. Cant wait to see what the next 10 years brings..
@mxcobra ha thats funny you say that. I actually had a bike in a magazine or a couple actually. Early bbr minibike conversions, everyone counted out my 4 stroke conversion minibike, till I won and then they all started complaining.
No...Doug's bike is completely production...LOL. He pulls an instant lead. What a fine exsample of the difference between works, and production. But, I heard they timed the motor rebuilds with a stop watch. Hey wey to launch the four stroke world. OH! and who ever ran supercross in 1997 bent the rules for the first four stroke, remember only prodution bikes are aloud to race. I don't think there was any production in that YZ400.
True but if they had put as much r&d in the two strokes over the years they would be better than 4 strokes, and much lighter. My only beef with 4strokes is the repairs on them, my friend blew up his YZ450 when it was under a year old, total write-off and he just parted it out. Apparently his vent tube got clogged with dirt
im a 2stroke fan through and through but not even showing henry cross the finish line on the first lap coz he's on a 4stroke is a disgrace. espn is shit
all u hear are pissed off bumblebees............then the BOOM

two strokes will always be better(and I ride a crf450r!) you need almost double the displacement in a four stroke to keep up
JOHNNYGIX 2 years ago
yea but the suspensions and frames do make the 4strokes better now
4stroke is better for deep sand/mud because of the torque, 2strokes are just perfect on an open clean track with good tracion
i ride a CR500R 2001
