Last track on side 2 "So long ago, so clear" was, I think Jon Anderson's first outing with Vangelis. . . . memories . . . .
Τhis song isn't a song of the Orthodox Church. It has similarities in some points with the Byzantine music but it cannot be regarded as a piece of it. I cannot say anything about this heavenly music......words ate not enough....

oic, my comment from a year ago. meh, if you listen to the thing, the first part is all epic and glorious, ie. heaven, and the second part is all dark and kinda ominous, ie. hell.
One of my favourite passages from this album. I somehow found parts of the "Hell" side of the album the most evocative. They don't make 'em like this anymore!
When I listen to this....... I can't help but think of the six children of Magda and Josef Goebbels, caught up in that horrific dance of death that was the final days of Berlin in 1945.
I am no nazi supporter, but those kids were innocents and didn't deserve to die like that.
Also that bell tolling at the end of the track reminds me of the quote " Ask not for whom the bell tolls......it tolls for thee...."
This album made me before years to come closer to God and see how beautiful Paradise would be and how awful and painful Hell would be. Thanks Vangelis.
This is such a beautiful song. My mom used to play this and many other celtic songs around the house while she cooked, while she read, while we slept or just while we were playing barbies. So I associate this song along with those memories that I deeply hold close to my heart.

@petkopn Well, in fact it is called Byzantine music, inspired by Byzantine Empire. It has absolutely nothing to do with religions and stuff. Religions are well known for using certain kinds of art to seduce people. Just enjoy this wonderful culture and leave God abusers out of this please! :)

@Infatable Maybe you should learn that The Byzantine Empire lived 1000 years just due to the Orthodox Church. And also called Byzantine Music belongs to orthodox religious practice. There is no seduction for the unbelivers, there is the soul of pure heart praying for the God mercy to forgive the sins of the world even in the 12 o clock.

"Hi mates, nice song, I'm a Satan's follower too." And yes, i believe that music can easily manipulate. I bet 50% of people listening to Vangelis' Alpha, their minds travel to outer space and alien life. Nice music for NASA ain't it? :))

What genre of music is this? It sounds like instrumental , but I heard that Vangelis also composes New Age music.
