The most Beautiful, Pure and Soberb voice ever exist and will do. No one in this world can resist her magical and unique way of singing. One voice beyond others. For this and all her songs: Sissel is the Voice ot the Universe.
What a great singer who is singing a GREAT song and once more proving that the musical notes have the power to move our hearts cause she cain't know a thing about what she sings of .... I mean if yew ain't washed in the blood it's just an act. Just good, purty work.
Always loved this song--and have said folk music will be back "in style" someday. With Sissel's beautiful voice to help it will be sooner rather than later.
Reminds me of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Every time I hear it I think of the Missouri River that flows through our state of Missouri too. Beautiful, and haunting.
@TungstenKid It's Paddy Moloney, founder and driving force behind the Chieftains, the most influential traditional Irish band ever. He's and amazing composer and performer.
@TungstenKid That "little Irish chap" is Paddy Maloney, a world class musician in his own right and leader of the Chieftains, one of the most famous traditional Irish groups extant today.
What Kind of flute is the older gentlemen playing? I dont recognize it, although the last time I was in music class was high school haha. He does an amazing job and it sounds wonderful.
Do we really have to go into metaphysical realms of abstract thought in order to write on a song's beauty or grace? I, for one, just enjoyed the song. Please, can one video on this website go without morons or phylosophy majors getting into arguments?
@FantasticBob7000 No."Daughter" is used figuratively. You must either look beyond the "words" to understand the beauty of this song or google the meaning of the lyrics.
Not if she is pregnant with agirl (ultrasound) and she is singing to Shenandoah, who is the father of her child. This is precisely the scenario for which I facebooked this to a married couple I know.
@annaohmaahpa haha that's an interesting twist to the interpretation of this song=) Yeah I agree you could definitely look at it like that. To me that's rather funny though, and strange to hear a woman singing this song, as the song "is actually" a european man singing to the daughter of a native american chief, who actually existed and his name was Shenandoah... This happened a long time ago of course so people have taken and twisted this song in many ways since it was originally written...
she is fantastic indeed and the violinist and flute player are just so passionate and are just pure grand musicians. I love this folk song. Brings me back to choir class in middle school and some dude singing it at work. I hope to meet him again someday. He gave me lots of laughs and is a good friend,
Amazing....just amazing.... This would have to be my favorite version of this classic American folk song. Never fails to choke me up and erupt in goose bumps!
Yes, Sissel is great, but the whistle playing is magical. Who'd have thought a simple tin whistle could sound like that? Paddy Maloney, you're The Man...
@KristaG2010 I think you misunderstand me, or I misunderstand you. I find this music to be gorgeous, like Sissel herself.
Also, "good" music, as you call it, is an entirely subjective matter. Anyone one who tries to convince you otherwise is an egotistical, lying devil. You like what connects with you. There is nothing else. This is why music critics and ratings are utterly nonsensical and restrictive.
@TheOneThatFlewOver Ridiculous, even in 'bad' music, there lies too much order to suggest 'good' music is merely anything one enjoys. Music one enjoys is only that: 'music one enjoys'. And good music is only that: 'good music'.
I disagree entirely. The intimacy and individual experience that is inherent to one's appreciation of any music absolutely means that there is no such thing as good or bad music outside of personal preference. What YOU are saying is that some opinions are worth more than others, and that may well be true to certain people. For example, a fan of Nina Simone would appreciate the opinion of another fan over someone who does not care for her. This does not mean they are right or wrong.
@dolofonos The MOMENT, the SECOND someone begins taking something like music and applying their idea of what's good and bad on another's is the VERY MOMENT that someone becomes, well, a kind of fascist, an egoist at the very least, and it becomes obvious to those who think rationally and outside of the self that said "someone" is utterly inward thinking and to be honest, kind of a self-aggrandizing dick. Musical quality, outside of the technical kind, is not something around which "facts" crowd.
@TheOneThatFlewOver A 'fascist'? You are now bringing political ideologies into a philosophical conversation? If you intend to make irrelevant accusations (and I hope it so or else you are so stupid as to have no understanding of the terms you carelessly throw about), then there can be no argument with you. Fortunately for me, in accordance with your own rules, I cannot lose, for yours is a world without order where nothing is good nor bad. And yet if you believe this, why do you argue?
@dolofonos I was using the term fascist loosely, more symbolically than literally. Fascists tend to think their opinions are right when opinions by their very nature are neither wrong nor right. Also, it seems I'm not getting my point across. "Good" and "bad" do exist in this world but existence is far more complicated than you're giving it credit for. Good and bad cannot apply to everything in existence, especially to something as intangible and enigmatic as music.
What's good music to you, and how can you be so self-important as to presume that other people have to agree with you, and if they don't, they're wrong?
@TheOneThatFlewOver To the contrary, what is 'good' has been a question intensely studied for millenia. Those who have taken the time to try and understand it have created the greatest music ever heard. You suggest that anything can be good; you suggest chaos can be music! How can this be so when even those who ignore the rules of harmony create that very music using notes that are ultimately derived from a perfect system of ratios? There are sets of laws like those of physics. But the argument I'm making is that human individuality, and the selfish gene, make all those millennia of study meaningless in the big picture, if the goal was to find "good" music, because we have such narrow individual perspectives. I don't see how a world of
@dolofonos "ordered chaos" means conclusively that there is good music and there is bad music. There is just music, and some people like some of it and some people like other incarnations, and that's the best humankind can do because not only are we no where near understanding the universe fully, but the perfection you require of the universe would negate the it entirely. The universe is as far as we can tell entirely imperfect, otherwise it would be simple to understand and would be infinite.
@dolofonos If the universe were perfect, it would either cease to exist or the laws would be fundamentally different. We live in a universe which, having studied it endlessly, appears to be unsustainable and will end in the distant future, but we humans have our ideas of perfection, which do not seem to abide by laws of physics and science, and if we can be that abstract with thought, how can you say music, much a product, in its human incarnation, of thought, is anything but good, ordered
@dolofonos music? Outside of what is physically displeasing to the ear; physically painful to listen to; all music has it's place, and to put one's own ideas as to what is good on everyone is, as I said, utterly extreme, hence the use of the term fascist.
There is a time for everything under the sun. That includes the fantastic superfluity of human music.
Sissel. you have the most beautiful voice in the whole wide world. Every song song you sing makes my heart burst in to pure happiness. And I thank god for you and voice. The world needs more people like you, please never stop singing.
As a person that lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and only a couple of miles from the Shenandoah River, thiswas like a holy baptism. To have this incredible voice sing about where I live was almost heartwrenching. Thank you Sissel.
Sissel, sweetie, it's "wide Missouri", not "white Missouri". Also, it's "Away, I'm bound away" not "Away, I'm bound to go". You can trust me on this, I'm an American and this is the way the song has been cast for well over 100 years. It might make more sense to you as white or to go, but the song isn't intended to make perfect sense; it's intended to evoke emotions thru partial images.
@pappyfiddle Sissel is Norwegian and, although her english pronunciation is very good, it may not agree exactly with how "wide" is pronounced in your part of the US. As far as "Away, I'm bound to go", that is the exact wording used by Paul Robeson among others. Although Sisselfan (author of this clip) is also Norwegian, his description of the song is accurate, particularly in that there is no single set of lyrics.

awesome voice but my choir is learning it different. With ours is like, " oh shenandoah i long to see you away you rolling river x 2 then we dont skip to this but im just saying this is what we do, "Away im bound away cross the wide missouri" then "o shenandoah, i long to see you away you rolling river. so i dont know why but thats what were doing. But again you have a great voice, awesome!!!!!!!!
The first time I heard this song was over 3 decades ago - sang by baritone. Moved me so much that I never forgot it. Sissel's rendition refreshed my love for this song and moved my spirit. I am a new fan of hers. Wonderful arrangement and recording. Thanks for sharing this!
she is awesome she is even better than my sister and i thought i couldnt find anyone better than her WOW girl!!!!!!! i have to sing this song at my sring concert and i have to sing shortning bread to .. that is a younger persons song in my opinion ha ha lol o well
Sissel`s voice is much better than many internationally known sopranos and other big names. Her voice is perfect for classical music and songs like this.
What an unbelievabe irony: TV shows the horrific tragedy in Haiti, and then on youtube there is available this truly magnificient performance of a beautiful woman and her one in an untold billion voice. So much an angel.
20 years and counting. That's how long my admiration and love for Sissel has lasted. This song is just as breathtaking as one can expect from her performance. I've only heard her crack once, and that was live. She was sick.

The music of Sissel is magic. As the as your videos, "they", slip-free, without interruption. As the "fog", European autumm. In its official page.

Yes, this is an American folk song of the early 1800's, the place names are all American which should give it away :P

The first time I heard this song was over 3 decades ago - sang by baritone. Moved me so much that I never forgot it. Sissel's rendition refreshed my love for this song and moved my spirit. I am a new fan of hers. Wonderful arrangement and recording. Thanks for sharing this!

Sissel`s voice is much better than many internationally known sopranos and other big names. Her voice is perfect for classical music and songs like this.

20 years and counting. That's how long my admiration and love for Sissel has lasted. This song is just as breathtaking as one can expect from her performance. I've only heard her crack once, and that was live. She was sick.
