The thing with this experiment is that the scientist tells the teacher that the shocks are painful, but not dangerous. So people just assume he's getting a strong jolt of electricity, when in fact they could be lethal. If the scientist would tell them that they might be lethal, I don't think they would continue.
@PtotheMtotheJ on the shock generator the toggle switches were labeled. Under the high voltage toggles they were labeled 'danger: severe shock', implying that death could be possible.
@PtotheMtotheJ That's the point of the experiment. In the absence of any other information would they go with what they thought was right, or defer to the experimenter? I think the results were obvious.
Notice: they fail to mention on this video that, in those days, people were generally offered money to take part in experiments. This heightens the desire to do as one is told.
@psychozo they were paid just for turning up, and got the money regardless of if they did what they were told or not. so it makes no differance to their obediance.
There is a quote that gets passed around. It goes "Question Everything." People are often sarcastic and ask "Why?" when told this quote. The logic behind it is this: Don't act because you were told to, or because it is normal.
FYI under the right conditions a shock of 170 volts is enough to kill somebody

@TheXXSTUNTMUTTXx Volts aren't what people have to worry about, it's the Amps (Or current) that kills people.
