Cigna had a strong incentive to claim the transplant was "unproven" ; I can't say if they were wrong or right. MB was paying the bills and was probably calling the shots behind the scenes. But I can say that I wouldn't want to go through millions of dollars of painful treatment with little hope of a recovery. Health insurance should be sold with clearly spelled out policies on this stuff, so people can chose in advance how much they're willing to spend on heroic multi-million dollar care.

The US has more liver-transplants per-capita than any country other than Belgium; 4 times that of the UK. Maybe the English just have fewer bad livers, but it's hard to imagine them having 75% less. It's probably easier for a government bureaucrat to declare a treatment "unproven" or unwarranted than a greedy, law-suit-prone, insurance company.

I've been following this story and it is absolutely disgusting what they did to this woman. Basically she cost them too much money, that's it, it's that simple. So much for your health.
