Hallo, any Australians out there? Is the use of "possums" (I know it's an animal) as a tender address to people one of Edna's little whims or is it common usage in Australian English? The connection to people seems odd to me.

No in australia we do not refer to people as possums. It is something that Dame Edna has come up with. God Bless her beautiful soul

It's not common usage, but I have heard people (usually 50+) use "possum" as an endearment. Dame Edna seems to have coined and somewhat popularised the term.

In English, we say all sorts of funny things. We might call our lover and close friend "honey" and "cupcake", respectively. They're foods, but animals aren't unheard of either (for example, "pidgie" or "pidgeon"); there's no real connection to people.
