The "explosions" can all be explained by either Jet Fuel catching fire, or air/dust/debris being ejected from the building.

The "penciled in gash" is really just a shadow. Look at the greyscale loop at around 5:20. As the smoke billows out from the right edge, it goes up and left, drifting away from the building, until it is gradually illuminated by sunlight. As the light hits the smoke trail more and more, the shadow grows with it.

It obviously was explosions inside the Tower.

Heck, some survivors even point out that there were explosions in the basement seconds before the 1st plane hit.
