  • Well, the band is great, but the real one's better. And what a hairstyle! He's only laughing because of it :D

  • Not-Like-This!

  • Vittuako se Knoffleri nyrpistelee ku toine vetää paremmi ku ite :D

  • Maybe it was meant to be a bit different than the original. Would there have been idea to play the original version?

  • Kaikki jotka sanoo tätä paskaksi on vaan kateellisia koska ei ite osaa soittaa paremmin!

  • @3:17 ouch! the master does not look impressed.

  • They killed his song.

  • Mark seemed bored to all the jazz piano and guitar shredding.... shed + jazz? wtf

  • Too much Jazz in the version... arrangement didn't come out very well

  • Mark's like: "They're butchering my song!... and that guitarrist has a sunshine for hair!!"

  • @Chipadychuck this was in all honesty far from butchering. anyone with any musical background can hear and see that these are good musicians playing a well thought out version of this song

  • CMON ! What are you guys talking about? Why wouldn´t it be a good idea to play own cover in front of MK? In my opinion Marzi, and the rest of the guys played very well and it was great cover. I bet MK loved it too, eventhough he looked kind of bored....

  • it sounds more like a shadows song, then a cover of mark knopfler :-)

Muusikot on oikeissa bändeissä

  • @suihkubad Nuo KAIKKI muusikot ovat oikeita muusikoita.

  • Great version, i really like it!

  • Imagine if they had played it "normally". Mark would have fallen to sleap, as he has heard the damn thing a million times by now. This was at least an entertaining and fresh take on the song.

  • Can't be more "humppa" than this. oh my lord have mercy...on Marks poor soul witch have been put throu this seventh circle of HELL!!!

  • This version is much more entertaining than the original version in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of dire straits and I just think these guys had a really good shot on this song, the least to say.

  • Siis.

  • What did Mark think of the performance, then ? He looks embarassed…

  • Solo meni vituiks. Solo was really bad

  • jätkät suomi lippu pystyyn kyl meilläkin osataan!!!!!

  • They just shouldn't have broken the rule and played a cover in front of THE artist. But i understand! This was absolutely the one and the only chance for them to PLAY while MK HIMSELF WATCHING!!

  • I think Lenni-Kalle Taipale's piano solo was beautiful and MK should have just relaxed, enjoyed and tried to understand that they're only wanting to show their respect, and that whatsoever, HE is the best!

The band obviously respected MK 'cos the guitar solo part was so short and i'm sure that Marzi was really uncomfortable. He probably didn't even want to sound like MK and try play without a plectrum! The version was very fine and it's not about the band's talent.

  • "That's not Sultans of swing" Come oooon!?!?! Should it be? I'm not judging Knopfler nor the band! I agree that it's not a good idea playing Sultans of swing in front of MK, but neither asking MK to play that song again and again! It's his job and he was just in an interview, not working!

For the band; it was much better this way. Jazz band playing jazzy cover!

  • I think that Mark has heard his song so many times that he got a bit bored in the ending

  • Marzi is absolutely one of the most talented and innovative players in Finland. Wonder why that old fart is lookin' like he's had a little bit of poo for dinner... This version Kicks Ass!

  • This guy must feel a bit edgy with the master himself evaluating his workmanship and all..

  • hyvin marzi vetää :D

  • i think the should have announced the name fo the song they were going to play,so that MK wouldn't be so confused trying to figure it uot..

  • Omfg I would laugh so HARD if I were Mark Knopfler hHAHAHAHA

  • helevetin hyvinhän nuo vetää.. tuo Mark Mikälienytonkaan on vaan ylimielinen paska.. sitä kai harmittaa ku joku muuki osaa soittaa sen...

  • If I was the guitar player I'd be scared shitless playing that song in front of Mark Knopfler himself! lol

But what I cant understand is why they didnt just get Knopfler to play...

  • oh no

  • Miettikää, yks rockin historian kovimmista kitaristeista kattoo ku sä vedät sen biisii.

  • at 3:15 mark begins to switch off. he dont care about that trumpet playin band, it aint what he calls it sultans of swing!!

  • ha ha,correct

  • Marzi rokkaa!

  • haista paska :D

  • i have never seen mark looking so pissed of at 3:15!!

  • Well................ Its pretty brave to attempt Sultans in any form while Mark is sitting in the same room! I would just bow down and say, we`re not worthy....

  • davey you said it perfect

  • it is different but good.

  • Mark was so upset after this performance that he was forced to take Seroxat 40mg every morning for one year hereafter.

  • a fantastic cover by talented musicans. a cover is supposed to have a original twist in it and this does. dont care if mark according to the youtube "experts" hated it or if anyone else hated it, i like it!

  • They are very advanced musicians technically, but I think they didn't respect enough the original song. I mean what's with the jazz shit? Knopfler looks bored/pissed in the end, and for a reason. The original song sounds 10 times better.

  • aalataur your very intelligent! you said it perfect.

I'd just bow and give the strat to Mark.

  • Mark hated the solo... 3:15

  • LOL

  • Some parts Mark looked a little insulted.

  • That man is very sensitive when it comes to playing the guitar. reason to be one of the bests ever.

The beginning of the song was creative and funny, the rest sounds cruel..

in my opinion, he has some talent but far to be the best of the bests guitarists and banjoists.

i'm a fun of his english performances.

  • What?

  • I think Knopfler thought that this is just a joke, but it turned to be better than he thought, and he got a little bit upset. Marzi's(the guitarist) hair is stupid, but funny. Marzi is hi class guitar player, even he is a little bit funny. This was awesome. Bye Bye!

  • no knofpler is thinking are they joking or serious

  • it's not bad at all. I think it's quite good arrangement.

I know, thats the real musician, he plays the song his own way, not just like the original...

  • yeah.. thats theyre interpretation of that song..

  • The arrangement is quite strange, but how can people say that the band's playing was bad?

  • the guy broke a major rule in the mark knopfler guitar rule book... you don't play with the pick

  • mark has no expression mauahaha... he's thinking he is a genius and them poor shit ahahah

  • i think it was great.. and i must disagree with u in 1 thing, for mark is not a rule, cause when he plays rithm on records he plays with a pick, and in 1 of his latest videoclips u can see that he is playing with a pick.. and i must quote 1 of his interviews where he says "i'm not used to played with them, but they are amazing things, and u know, it is the biggest amplifier on guitar playing".. he doesnt play very much with them live tho..

  • poor mark ! what an agony

  • I concured with majority of the people here that Mark was tortured. Or perhaps he was amused by how badly they played. Just look at the expressions on his face.

  • you can hear mark thinking: 'please stop playing'

  • My thoughts exactly.

  • lol Mark Knopfler was shamed, im sure he just wanted to shrivel and die at points!

  • is that marzi nyman playing?

  • yup

  • Se oli täysin kunnianosoitus Markille.

  • great version by marzi!

  • aika noloa ei helevetti..kattokaas markkia ku toi rupee tota soloo vetää, mk on just se näköne et haluis mennä vähä pojalle näyttää. :D

  • You're right, this performance was a bad idea. The "creative" (Lenni-)jazz part is especially tired, as you can tell of Knopfler's face, one feels really sorry for him.

  • I guess it's just not really IT... I mean-it doesn't interact like it should... and the guitar is awful sometimes...

  • Great players in the band but this version is quite boring.

  • I think this is awesome version of sultans of swing. (: And hope so, Mark respected it.

  • well, this song was a very good adaptation but Mark Knopfler is sleeping!!!

  • This is not too bad a version.

  • I agree with ostakaa!

  • Great musicians like Mark Knopfler are obliged to pass through each

  • Mark Knoplfer: AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!!

    The House 'Band' : hahahahahahahahaha

  • if I was in a foreign country listening to an instrumental version of my own song on TV, I think I'd feel pretty damn good =D

  • they really made a big effort for the great man, well done.

  • looks like the people here who are dissing this performance are some kind of "rock'n'roll attitude people" and have such a narrow idea how to play some particular song (or music generally) correctly. i can only recommend you to listen some jazz music and try to realize the way the really talented musicians make their own interpretations about all the songs they are playing. that's what arts are about as far as i am concerned

  • I agree

  • No joo joo, on se nyt ihan vitun noloo pakottaa joku Knopfler kuunteleen oman klassikkobiisinsä miljoonattaviidettätoista telkkaristudiobändivetoa, vaikka oltais kuinka vitun mUUsikoita olevinaan. Minusta näyttää ennemminkin, että täällä on lähinnä jotain suomalaisia mUsiikintUntijoita, jotka reittaa alaspäin jokaisen kriittisen kommentin. Paska idea, mikä paska idea, vaikee vaan myöntää.

  • i do not understand. They draggeg Mark

Knopfler to listen his own my music instead that let him play?????

  • No this is great. And funny. Why the band should just cover? Its very well performed and a nice interpretation.

  • but everyone can see as mike is bored

  • :( oh no ... haha

  • ...Esim. kutsua kokonaan johonkin toiseen kunnioittavampaan ja parempaan haastatteluohjelmaan...

  • LOOOOL Mark should play it instead!!!!!!

  • At 0.56 Mark has the look of a person that's just realised they left the iron on :-)

  • So let me get this straight:

You get a legendary guitarist to come to your show and instead of having him play, you make him watch some band interpret one of his songs?!

  • AT LEAST HE KEPT SMILING....

  • Cool, like elevator Dire Straits

  • The first part of the song is good but the second........poor Marko

  • funny. Mark is great man... this is like a rape

  • Not a shame. They made it a twist. Just funny.

  • Myötähäpeä. Always as bad an idea to force an artist to listen to a cover of his own work. Entertainment industry folks thinking... And sorry, even if Marzi were a "legend" that doesn't make everything played by him that great.

  • Also, can't believe this is almost 8 years old. seems like yesterday when I watched this on TV :D

  • So true :)

  • No ffence meant to any of the performing artists but it was plain mediocre. There are school bands down here who render more pleasing cover versions and astonishly accurate phrasing of this 'anthem' of rock n roll. Probably consigned to anonymity while their music being consigned to infinity. Heard melodies are sweet ... those unheard are sweeter

  • But it takes no imagination at all to play "astonishly accurate" cover version. I think this is more entertaining than a straight cover of this song we've all heard a thousand times before.

  • yeah ... true. You do have a point there. Playin note by note, bends and tremello inclusive does sort of make things predictable to an extent

  • I feel sad about Mark =(

  • The "Oh no" says it all...

    Poor Mark...

  • He looks uneasy becouse he must think he's not worthy enough to be covered by the legendary Joonas Hytönen house band. What an honor it must be.

  • Mark don't like this way of unnaturally playing guitar

  • Mark's face at the end says it all !

  • I think that was beautiful. :)

  • For a professional guitarist i still think it was a very poor attempt.

  • Come on people, stop scolding Marzi Nyman. Have you watched the interview of MK? One part goes like this:

Joonas says to Mark: You're one of the most significant guitarplayers of our times. So is he, by the way, (points Marzi) in Finland, Marzi Nyman.

Then Mark says: I have noticed.

That means he thinks Marzi is good! Because he is!

  • Tht solo was total sh*te! Completely lost feeling of the song.

You can tell Knopfler wants to run a mile! LOL

Guitarist needs to find a new job!

  • suck my chocolate salted balls

  • Lol! That was funny!! Did ya see Mark Knopfler's face when that guy started doing all that crap on the guitar at the end...priceless!!

  • i would like to see you do better solo in the end of this song.. if you do.. please send a video to me.. i'm sure that would be priceless.. moron

  • Hey dickhead I'm not the only one here who gets the feeling that 'Mark just wants to get out of there' in the end lol! Oh by the way I don't need to send in a video of a better solo just have a look at any Dire Straits video. That crap at the end totally ruined the song! Chocolate??? Salted??? WTF are you on lol! Think i'll pass :)

  • Hahaha Knopfler looks bored towards the end hahaha

  • Hah, this was funny! Thanks for posting. Marzi is awesome guitar player as well.

  • The song is legendary and Mark is a living legend. But that performance was amazing. Marzi is the most versatile guitar player in Finland. When this song ended , I'm sure that Mark went to congratulate and talk to Marzi and to the whole band.

  • if i were mark i would have not standed for the dire shite. would have nut him right on the head for raping such a great song

  • obviously you don't get the point of this cover.. this is a jazz band playing in their own way and making a NEW version of this song. Would it be better if there was some garage band trying to play this song as straits played it? i don't think so..

  • Totally agree with ya!!

  • obviously you aren't very sophisticated listener if you don't know legendary song "chocolate salted balls" by the one and only iisac hayes. more importantly i believe that you are one of those guys who has zero understanding when it comes to different genres of music.. or there might be an alrernate explanation: you are simply an idiot

  • Ok in the first 30 secs of the song are not that bad...really! But yeah I guess u must be right me and pretty much the rest of the world can't be that sophisticated a listner if we don't know who issac hayes is...who??? u mek me laugh lol! Sorry but the guy just totally screws the song at the end but hey that's just my opinion 'Marks too judging by his expression at the end'!

  • Everybody knows the legendary song of Iisac Hayes "Chocolate salted balls", so what's "LOL" about that? And Marzi rules as a guitar player...

  • Ok, it pretty much rapes the original concept of the song but you can't say that the players didn't do well on this performance.

  • Oh my GOD what are they doing to my song!! I think he's about to walk to the stage and show them how its done... hahaha

  • Same in english, please.

  • Ce n'est pas sultans of swing, retournez vous cacher.

Knopfler est affligé par cette daube sans nom. C'est inadmissible qu'il écoute cette merde alors qu'il y a des véritable groupes, comme les rocking fingers ou the next train. Vraiment dommage

  • MK's a G0D!

  • i think hes lughing at his hair

  • What a crack up! You can't help but wonder what Marks thinking.

  • Mark's thinking; "No tour in Finland this year"

  • yeah, he looks a little uncomfortable, as does the guy playing with MK WATCHING him!!!!

  • HAHA, looks like MK doesn't enjoy it so much ; )
