  • Nice man, Im gonna be working on cbg #5 soon myself. 3 Questions, are you making the boxes yourself or are they old cigarboxes? what is the length on that neck? its huge. What kinda p/u are you using? Keep up the great work

  • Thanks!! The 1st box is a box from the hobby shop Its basswood I think. I think it was meant to be a jewelry box..I couldn't find a cigar box at the time. The Harley Box came from the Harley Shop. I built the others except for my last one ,its an old cigar box.

The neck is 3 ft long. It does look longer though.

I used a Schatten soundboard transducer . Its just a little mic. I got it at Stu Mac online. Thanks!! Check out the cigar box nation online. Lenny

  • This is the best sounding cigar box guitar I've heard yet!!! What are you using to amplify your sound? What type of electronics (pick up) to play through this amp? Keep on Rockin'. It sounds excellent!

  • Thanks!! I'm using a old Crate G120c xl 2 12's solid state ,with some overdrive. The guitar has a Shatten soundboard transducer from Stu mac. Thanks for your interest!

  • Thanks !! If you like this check out cigar box nation.

  • I sure will. But im kinda wondering.. is it tuned down an octave aswell?

  • I think the 1st box is tuned fcfc.I don't tune them that high anymore. kinda rough on the neck.

  • This Rocks!

  • I'm not a expert on the electronics, but I've seen six string pickups on them before. theres no reason it wouldn't work This is a good question to ask at cigar box nation. Yeah you can use the tuners , the strap holders , knobs, all the wiring and pickups. Glad to hear you are building one!

  • Thanks! I use oak or poplar for the neck. 1 1/2 x 3/4 I get it at the hardware store 6ft length cut to 3ft . I get 2 necks out of it.

If you like this kind of thing check out cigar box nation online.

  • im building a 4 string cigar box guitar, would a set of 6 string strat pickups work fine on it? (got an old beat up strat for free so i figured i could use some of the parts from it)

  • Thanks! I'm using a Schatten Transducer. Its about $30.00 at Stu Mac. I'm running thru my old crate amp. Some of the guys use the transducers from radio schack. I think they are a bit cheaper. Thanks for your comments!

  • Hi - the box sounds really nice.

Is this just a simple attached transducer that you can get for $2-3 ???

Do you just plug this into your hi-fi ??

    Thanks

  • I need to know how to install the pick for the amp...

I'm making my brother one for christmas...

    ill picking by the way

  • Thanks! I use a transducer,its a small mic.

I put mine on the back of the neck under the bridge. It comes with putty to attach it. I like epoxy better. I get mine at stuart mc donald. Shatten soundboard transducer about $30.00

    I haven't tried a pickup yet.

  • Man I can't thankyou enough.

Does it give a better/worse sound if you drill a hole in the box?

  • Glad to help. I can't help you there. All of mine so far have had soundholes.

  • what do you use as a pick up and where have you placed it

  • Its a Shatten soundboard transducer from Stu Mac. Its under the bridge on the back of the neck.

  • man that sounds is awsome r0ck 0n

  • THanks!!

  • wow really great

  • Thanks alot!!

  • that was hot, im in the process of makeing one, im having problems finding info how to play CBG can you help me out THANKS

  • Hey Thanks!! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. You tube didn't send me a email.

I've seen instructional video's for sale on ebay. On you tube there are some video's that show how to play. Try typing in cigar box instructional. Or how to play cigar box guitar. Scotties cigarbox page has lots of links all about cigarbox guitars. Yahoo has a cigar box builders forum these guy's can point you the right way. Enjoy!

  • very nice

  • thanks!!

  • If you go to my space type in lennysguitarpage i have some pic's there.

  • where did you attach your bridge? to the cigar box or to the little piece of the neck that sticks out after the box?

  • Its on the body. There is alittle piece of brass on the very back edge on the box. I had to put it there because the strings slightly touched the box and they were getting muted .The bridge is under my hand.

  • What tunning did you use?

  • Its tuned fcfc I'm using the adgb guitar strings.

  • wicked sound-full bodied.

  • Thanks! Its a fun guitar.

  • what are u using for a pickup?

  • It's a Shatten soundboard transducer. I got it from Stuart Mc Donald.

  • That sound is excellent.

When you did the bridge and nut, did you notch them to keep the strings in place?

Also, are they fastened to the wood in some way or do you rely on string tension to keep them in place?

  • Thanks! Yeah they have slots.I used a small set of files. You can get string buzzing here. so after filing sand those slots to make sure you get any burrs out. I left the bridge free floating so I could move it. the nut has alittle epoxy on it,then I clamped it.

  • Thanks for the response. One other question: I've noticed on your Harley box that the sound holes have what appear to be wire mesh covers framed by polished steel or chrome rings. I think I've seen some other instruments that employ this same cover. I love the way this looks and would like to do the same in my CBGs. Can you tell me where you found them or did you machine them yourself perhaps?

Thanks for the many enjoyable videos. You're quite a musician.

  • Thanks! You can get those at Stuart Mc Donald They are in the resonator guitar parts section. They are cool.Come in one piece. It might be listed as Dobro parts at Stu mac.

  • Again, many thanks!

  • man this is a great sounding guitar, so heavy..

when you write that the bridge is brass you mean the whole length ? solid brass ? or did i miss understand

  • Sounds better than a normal electric 6-string

  • Thanks!!

  • Ya I am gonna make one of these and use Bass strings, to make a bass IDC if the neck snaps LOL i am getting it from the scrap pile in my yard but ya this will be pretty cool.

  • That sounds increadible.. are they hard to make?

  • Thanks !! No they aren't too hard. Scotty's cigarbox page has some plans and lots of tips. Thanks again.

  • That sounds really really good for a cigar box guitar.

  • Thanks!! This one is a jewelry box from the hobby shop. I think the amp is helping the sound some.

  • Thanks!!

  • i just hit the favorite button,,,

  • Thanks!! I appreciate that.
