  • @MrGdsfd - anyone know what the name of the song is at the beginning of this? I'm trying to track it down

  • @soundtrackman99 thanks to a comment from many years ago - its the End Credits track from the Hoffa soundtrack by David Newman

  • Saying Michael Jordan made ESPN is ridiculous, the NBA wasn't even on ESPN for the entirety of his career. Getting the NFL made ESPN. Great montage.

  • Damn dust...kept getting in my eyes...

  • *Sniff sniff*

    Damn it who's cutting onions?!

  • Best sports montage ever made

  • OF COURSE they end with photo of the fake "knockout" in the fixed Liston-Ali 'fight'.

Didn't anyone let ESPN know the 'fight' was a raw, baldfaced fake?

  • @marcxopoco That's far from a certainty and regardless, it's one of the most memorable sports *images* of all time.

  • @POGlegend42 is a member of The Religion of Ali.

The fake one punch "knockout" of Liston by light hitting Ali was so obvious a two year old could tell it was a raw fake.

  • Why include Arafat's palestinian terrorists?

Is ESPN selling them as 'athletes'?

  • The last 3 images are of Jordan, Ruth, and Ali; fittingly a countdown of the 3 best athletes of the century

  • Whats at 1:16!?

  • THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME MUHAMMAD ALI!!!!!

  • The media created fraud Ali.

  • There needed to be more of the clip of Secretariat coming down the stretch at the Belmont. That was simply perfection in sports. That was the image of God creating the perfect athlete.

  • Sorry boys, but the decision ESPN made to make Jordan the athlete of the century over Ruth is more and more transparent everyday. Jordan made ESPN, hence the decision. Ruth made sports. That's the difference. Before Ruth, sports were this game for ruffians and cast-offs. After Ruth? Sports were mainstream. EVERYONE watched Ruth. Jordan isn't maybe even the best player in his sport in history. Ruth? There is no one even CLOSE to Ruth in baseball.

  • who's the golfer at 2:45?

  • @ygefyg Payne Stewart winning the US Open over Mickelson about 5 weeks before he was killed in an airplane crash.

  • @ygefyg Payne STewart...died in a plane crash at end of 99...tragic...

  • Where's the soccer? Surely Maradona's Hand of God goal or his slalom against England in '86, The ManU stoppage time Champion's League victory over Bayern, Germany upsetting Hungary in 1954, The Italy/Brazil match in '82, or 20 other great moments could and should have been in here. A very USA-centric century...

  • @BerlinSchool Its ESPN..

  • USA! USA! USA!

  • 4:04-4:34 My favorite.... Good lyrics with Good moments = BEST THING EVER!

  • They should do one in 2099!

  • Great video, but no Tim Duncan? Are you serious?

Jesus...At least put in the shot of Duncan and Robinson winning their first title.

  • @PitchfordStache Well this video is made right as year 1999 ended. So at that point Tim Duncan was just a 1-time champion. Of course he would be included if it had been made some years later.

  • Gary Thorne's memorable call of Lemieux's last home goal of 1997 will never be forgotten.

  • YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wish they had more Secratariet, more than the like .5 second clip anyway

  • U cant have the images of century without MJ and Muhammad Ali two ppl who changed their sport forever.

  • @MoneyAffiliatedCE swallows everything his phony media spoonfeeds him.

  • John McEnroe thinks 6 people couldn't see anything

  • the chris webber time out

    classic

  • found myself making faces at the screen, also sent chills down my spine. amazing job

  • look at the stanley cup at 53 thats nuts

  • Easily the greatest sports video ever made.

  • this is the best video i have ever seen. i still remember watching it the first time it aired on Sportscenter

  • in your face russia unh just another thing we beat ur ass at. get some baby

  • the cubs won the pennant bout dam time oh wait thats old hahah cubs man get ur shit straight

  • After Lou Gehrig the chills come in. But my faves are The pistol, Loyola MaryMounts unforgettable team, Texas Western, Jimmy Valvano. the look of pride that Willie Mays has, Dr J, Flutie, John Starks Dunk. I was watching this when the clock struck 12 2000.

  • Still gives me chills.

  • 7 people will never be in a sports highlight video in this century...or ever.

  • weres the immaculate reception

  • @MrGdsfd It's there, check around 4:45...

  • @MrGdsfd what is the song in the begining called or who is it by

  • Where is Gar Heards famous shot over Boston?

  • Lol secretariat an athlete? are you kidding? its a damn animal, the thing was frightened as hell and was running to be rewarded a fresh apple or sugar cube..an athlete??? lmao its a damn animal!!! do u think he really knew he was competeting??? lol

  • I could have done without the Nancy Kerrigan clip.........

  • @RHeckman00 i thought that at first but comedy is a part of sports too :P

  • @RHeckman00 That and OJ's Bronco......anyone who buys a used white bronco is cursed.

  • @RHeckman00 "Why?!?" ;)

  • @dylanbradbury Honestly, I could think of over a thousand more significant and memorable video clips with sound bites from last century other than a mediocre Olympic being attacked (and not even severely at that) and being over dramatic in whining about it

  • @RHeckman00 I was kidding, impersonating Ms. Kerrigan. :)

  • @dylanbradbury o. lol. gotcha. Very nice :)

  • love this, couldn't get enough when they were replaying it on Christmas sportscenter right before Y2K. Jim thorpe is a good place to start. Dream On is such a classic, good pick

  • 2:35 my friends grandpa is him

  • I LOVE THIS CLIP AND IT BRINGS TEARS ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE IS THEY SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THE SECRETARIUT CALL AND NO JEFFERY MAYER

  • the 3 greatest athletes of all time

    ali

    jordan

    and yes secretariut

  • @bloktv doesn't know that Ali is a media created fraud.

  • everytime i watch it the tears start flowing as soon as the song comes on and it doesnt stop until i have been off youtube for 10 min and forgotten about it. The world seems like it is coming to an end soon and i just thank god i got to live to see a lot of thes emoments. i wish i could go back and relive my teenage years all over again. love sports so much

  • Nadia Comăneci 5:09

  • 4:46-4:50 my favorite

  • Wow!!!, que video!!!!.... Imprecionante!!!

  • Like Wise I also have been looking for this video the best Ive ever seen when it comes to sports...YO Jimmy V!!!!

  • @ 1:22 super bowl shuffle by the monsters of the midway that is the Chicago bears

  • The best sports clip video of all time!!! Saw this back in 1999 on New Years Eve and was so glad to find it again.......thanks for sharing!! = )

  • 3:45 is Grambling's famous football coach Eddie Robinson.

  • And at 6:30 i have an idea but i just wanna be sure

  • whats going on at 1:18

  • I'm a 30-year-old American, former prep sportswriter and now sports information director. My interest in sports far outweighs my ability to play them. I'd bet I can identify 75% of the people shown, including Scotty Bowman, Payne Stewart and Pele. That said...who is the older man shown at the 3:45 mark? And what is the background of the scene at the 4:22 mark?

  • @waltalan10 If I had read through the comments I'd have found those answers.

  • Comment removed

  • how much the world would suck without sports

  • Who is the coach at 2:35? And I just can't put a name to that face at 6:29.

  • @LamarMatic 2:35 coach Jim Valvano, and 6:29 Michael Johnson the sprinter.

  • kinda wish i will live to see what this century montage will look like

  • Asian ladies online lushfmlk.info

  • Great video but I don't think they should have used Aerosmith - Dream on. Should have stuck with an instrumental the entire time. The lyrics to the music just take away from the beauty of the pictures and videos

  • Comment removed

  • No matter how many time I watch this video it brings tears to my eyes everytime. I simply love this video.

  • @thedoghouseaward Here here. The images and the music strike something deep in the sports fan

  • Brett Favre with brown hair, DAMN HOW TIME FLIES

  • It's amazing how every time I watch this video, I notice some new faces and events that I didn't notice before. Amazing video, I watch this once in a while, never gets boring.

  • where is the notorious Carleton Fisk Homerun

  • @Thedropkickkids It is there. 4:36 mark.

  • that was great haha simply breathtaking

  • Comment removed

  • That was wonderful!! :D

  • 5:09 Nadia Comaneci, the first gymnast ever to be awarded a perfect score of 10 during Montréal's Summer Olympic Games of 1976; she was only 14. She's probably the most well-known gymnast in the world. So happy to see her, even for such a brief moment.

  • u go from the most classless guy John McEnroe to the guy with the most class Lou Gehrig...all within about a second. lol..

  • I'm not American and that old to know these old highlights or anything about baseball, but even though I recognize half of these clips it just gives me goosebumps.

  • 4:45 is the best moment in nfl history

  • i feel so inspired when i see this...

  • Simply The most well put together 7 minutes of television I have ever seen.

  • It was called the game of the century and yet johnny rodgers clip is missing....

  • I wish they gave Barry Sanders more than one second, even if he did juke 3 guys in that second.

  • What the hell was going on at 4:07? Was it an unexpected comeback play? So unexpected that the band came out to play?

  • @SecretAgentS76 OMG...r u fucking serious? u really don't know what the hell that is?!??

  • @SecretAgentS76 oh..nevermind..ur only 17. ur too young to know what that was.

  • Steroids don't help you make contact with the ball. That's as far as I'll go in defending Bonds.. BUT they can help you send a few into orbit.

  • @904austin They do if it helps you swing a 33 ounce bat faster...

  • @904austin Well yeah - No one denies Barry was a talented player..but obviously he had alot of help setting records lol.

  • @904austin Actually, not true at all, your argument. See, I was sunburned really bad once in the eyes--I was stranded in the snow for two days, and when I got back, I couldn't see. Guess what they gave me? THE EXACT same steroid Barry Bonds got. And yes, it actually improves your eyesight. Improved eyesight means better contact. Better contact on a stronger orbit means that instead of hitting 25, 20, 15, 7, 5 home runs in the end of his career he hit 73, 46, etc... So, you're wrong.

  • The best sports montage I've ever seen. Simply awesome.

  • I would most definetly have to disagree with you. He might be the best homerun hitter alive but that could be argued as well. But as far as all around players theres some that are still playing that are better as well as retired players. If you need examples, well maybe you should become a fan of another sport. The only honor I would give Bonds at being the best at would be "Biggest Asshole", but then again that could be argues as well.

  • @tris81902

barry bonds was only an asshole to the media, but can you really blame him? all of his teammates have talked about how good of a teammate he is and how he is looked up to by the younger guys

  • @tris81902 Bonds once had an OBP of freaking .609. It's fair to discredit him for the roid use if you want, but he's obviously one of, if not THE greatest hitter of all time.

  • the best living baseball player is barry bonds, say what you want about steroids, everybody was on steroids, thus being the steroids era, he was playing at the same level as everybody else, with the same advantages everybody else had.

  • You know your a true sports lover when you get goosebumps every time you watch this

  • amazing

  • Every time this came on all those years ago it gave me goosebumps. Now, at age 30 nothing has changed. If anything I find myself more sentimental for my boyhood heroes. From the fallen to the scandalous to icons and legends sports is a part of us all. How perfectly captured...

  • who won the pennant at 2:02

  • Ny Giants

  • Who do you think the best living baseball player is

    My vote is Ricky Henderson

  • joe dimaggio or pete rose

  • @241672 pete rose its a cryin shame he aint in the hof

  • @mrjake700 but still he put up numbers

  • @barleycj Willie Mays, without a doubt.

  • I saw this montage in my Post - Production class at Kutztown University last week. I thought it was a great video and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the producer/editor is a Kutztown graduate. I'm amazed that this did not win an Emmy. It is still an awesome video and should be one of the standards of editing any montage.

  • Who is the guy crying at 3:45/3:46?

  • @Snoopy2299 it's Eddie Robinson, the legendary coach of Grambling (I-AA). 56 years as head coach, he is the winningest coach of all time of division I (408 wins, 14 more than Paterno)

  • How Come people on here are bashing soccer and american football? Both Soccer and American Football are considered contact sports. people actually have career and life threatening and ending injuries in both sports. just ask david pollack or marc-vivien-foe. they'll tell you.

  • @TheAntihero6212 Football (soccer) a contact sport? Where there is a contact?Ok, sometimes there is but not significantly. I have played it since kid and I never even thought it a contact sport

  • @reel1981 You probably didn't play it at a high level. Professional soccer is a very physical sport.

  • This video still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every single time I watch it...ahhhh can't even begin to say how awesome this montage is!

  • Lol thats true baseball is a joke now that you have all these so called "great" athletes that broke all records come out about steroids. Football, hockey, and basketball are the best.

  • Oh man, so many EPIC victories and defeats! The Miracle on Ice, 49ers over Cowboys NFC championship, Michael Jordan, Muhammed Ali, Wayne Gretzky.

Ah yes, I remember the backboard-shattering days! Nothing makes you look so hardcore as a dunk that brings down the rim!

  • Hey, why can't we enjoy sports for what they are, a pastime? All this trash-talking is really beside the point. You can be an American football fan and still enjoy soccer, baseball, basketball, etc. They are not mutually exclusive!!

I would call myself primarily an American Football fan, but I enjoy all competitive sports. There's something about the drama, passion and emotion that players put into the game that gets me. Why can't we all see it like that and have some respect for other sports?

  • not once did I say that football was the number one sport. Please learn to read and comprehend haha. American football is indeed better than soccer and that is a fact. Baseball has been in the olympics for years idiot, just recently being removed. what a foot fairy haha. steriods are also abundant is the sport of soccer dumbass. your last sentence doesn't even make sense. please come back with something better next time fag boy hahaha

  • wow. you are sadly misinformed you obnoxious hack

  • misinformed in what way? steroids are used in soccer for faster recovery and to boost endurance. do a little research please. you are both idiots who lead pathetic lives

  • The NFL is america's sport. And its the best sport in the world. Why soccer is so popular world wide is beyond me. Its so boring, not enough action, not enough goals. Football is a man's game.

  • american football is boring as fuck every little while theirs a break ...

  • @southernprep5 You're a fucking idiot. American football is nothing but pads, money, breaks, and advertising. Why does a 60 minute game take 3 hours? You need time for commercials, timeouts, and 20-30 second breaks after 5-10 seconds of action. Yes, the athletes are superb, but it is such a slow game with all the stopping and starting. Go to a European soccer game and you'll shit your pants because of the intensity and glory. Search 'top football ultras' or something and see what passion is.

  • @ms2Tech PSSH I turn on a soccer game, watch for 2 seconds, change the channel. It's the most retarded game in the world. You fall on a guy and it's a red card.

  • @ComputerH4xorz Dude, you're a fuck. Have you ever thought that different people might just like different things?

  • uh oh somebody's feelings are hurt haha. just face it man, soccer is a sport that nobody in america likes and thats all that counts haha. go kick the ball around gay boy

  • i live in america and i love football(soccer) so you better rewrite that statment

  • haha soccer the sport where they take dives and cry when they get kicked in their shins. soccer is for pussys who couldn't make the football team bitch haha. remember that one headbut? that was so physical haha dumbass

  • this is coming from a guy who watches a sport that wear pads

  • if they didnt wear pads they would kill each other

  • no skill in baseball? try hitting a 95 mph fastball or throwing a ball 100 mph right on the outside corner of the plate idiot. the best athletes in the world play football it requires speed, technique, strength, and knowledge to play unlike golf. stupid people coming on here talking about shit they have no idea about. dumbass

  • didnt they run like a highlight thing like this back in 99 with areo smith for the sound track?

  • Joe Paterno 3:28

  • lol T-ball doesn't count

  • There is no skill in baseball??? Just when I thought I would never hear a more idiotic thing than what my cousin said last week, I come to this site and read your comment. Thank you, you've made my day with your stupidity.

  • sure about that? ever tried baseball?

  • Bobby Orr 6:38

  • lol you say that about baseball but want to put Woods at 2? hahaha cause Golf is much more athletic then baseball...

  • Bobby Clarke at 5:06

  • no football!?? (the real one, the one played with their feet)

  • a.k.a. FUTBOL.

  • goosebumps

  • And really? All US athletes? So A-Rod, Canseco, and McGwire = all US athletes? What about Michael Jordan? Brett Favre? There's still very little evidence that Clemens or Bonds took steroids, despite what the media likes to say, but there has never been a drug problem outside of baseball and the media's imagination.

And why exactly is it wrong to make yourself better, exactly? Anyone can get steroids? You don't just stick a needle in your butt and turn into a super-athlete.

  • How fucking dare you? Lance Armstrong has never failed a drug test. Ever. The only even questions that came up were from a French lab that was mad that an American won their race anually. The only reason he had a hint of high testosterone levels is because he had TESTICULAR CANCER, and NEEDED to be drugged.

  • If you believe that, you're an idiot.

  • i could debate this subject amongst myself all day. in the end i'd probably settle on lance armstrong because of his continuous dominance of a competitive sport, the adversity he overcame, the great things he did outside of sports, and the recognition he brought to the sport of cycling. i'm open to debate.

  • best athlete in the world? shoot, good names being thrown out in pele, gretzky, ali, and ruth. but then don't forget some new names, specifically mike phelps and lance armstrong. in terms of being larger than life, i don't think any athlete was ever greater than michael jordan. in terms of pure athleticism, bo jackson was probably the greatest ever. he wsa incredible. then there's also the original multi-sport athlete, jim thorpe (he's in 4 different halls of fame).

  • geraldrford, i don't doubt that gretzky was the greatest hockey player that ever lived, but just remember that he "made a mockery of the record books" during a time when most of the great players in the world were still trapped in the eastern bloc communist states and weren't allowed to play in the NHL. just some food for thought.

  • No. They weren't. The Red Army team was hugely overrated. Any Canada Cup tournament ('81 aside) Gretzky kicked their asses.

Vladislav Tretiak: The goalie most famous for losing the two most significant games in hockey history.

  • This montage is too American for me to enjoy, eh it was for an American audience i guess.

  • greatest athletes of all time

    1.Ali

    2.Pele

    3.Jordan

  • Stop. Just stop. Babe Ruth had 714 homers when the record was 121. He hit 60 in a season when the record was 28.

And really... the greatest athlete... nobody in NHL history had 200 points in a season other than the Great One, who did it four times. He has more assists than anyone else has points. Wayne Gretzky is the greatest athlete to ever live.

    And he's Canadian.

  • yeah i know they're fuckin great but that doesn't mean they're top 3 of.a.t

Ali is the greatest boxer of all time

Pele isthe greatest soccer player of.a.t

Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time

You should see past your bias towards hockey and baseball

  • Are you retarded? You gave absolutely no argument except throwing out the word "bias" and saying that Mohammed Ali, Pele, and Michael Jordan are the best in the history of their sports.

Babe Ruth and Wayne Gretzky made a mockery of their record books. Jordan would've had to average 70 points per game to dominate the way Gretzky did, and that's a statistical fact. Ruth multipled the the home run record by seven. He doubled the single season record.

  • ok then i take off jordan and put on...jack nicklaus.i know your canadian and probably dont have a clue who pele is but he made a mockery of HIS record book
