Wow, all the haters need to realize, there is training with the bo staff for combat, and there is training for the bo staff in competitions, specifically for show. show=showy moves, get it? stop being douches and appreciate the time this dude had to practice to get these moves down. i know almost none of us can do that.
@1996Matthewj I actually can use the first 2 moves perfectly fine the other few are hit an miss,
It's extremely impressive work thats for sure.
Hell the only reason I can use moves close but a little different than his are training with staff's from an extremely young age 11 or so now I'm 23... I train more for combat than showmanship though I appreciate both. An you probably couldn't have said what you just did any better... very few ppl can use this in real life.
1:25 He even says that this is a "Circus Act". Besides, this looks more for fun and coordination. I'd never use these tricks in an actual fight. Perhaps just only to psyche out my enemies if I were good enough.
Everyone is so retarded, first of all everyone stop with the ego, yea i take martial arts and its tough and deadly blah blah blah, like the rere below me, if any of you were real martial artists you would let go of the ego and be as non violent as possible because ultimately martial arts is not about combat WHATSOEVER. And to all of the people saying you cant use these spins in combat...your right..lol. The entire art of bo spinning is based around performance, not combat.
My sons are ATA purple belts, one son uses the Bo, the other san jeol bongs . They are learning respect, and the proper use of the weapons as self defense. Recently they started XMA classes on Saturdays and love it as a way of performing and having a bit more fun with their weapons. The XMA competitors are great martial artist who compete in the creative class in addition to the standard. Please find out more about XMA and ATA before you randomly disrespect these talented artists.
No wish to offend anyone, but if these are most advanced, then the art itself isn't that hard ;-) And yes, they are not useful in fight situation, but they are great for coordination. If you can do these, you will easily control the staff so it strikes right where it should. Best wishes staff spinners and staff fighters!
just putting it out there all real martial arts have tricks even traditionally they were used to show of speed, skill and strangth in order to recruit more people into the armys and schools of the time not all of course but many.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i too pay to take a martial art, called hapkido. it is the deadliest korean martial art and is now what police officers are taking. just for my yellow belt testing i had to spar 6 people in which 2 were 2nd and 3rd degree black belts one after another and then go into a grappling match. martial arts is not a joke! some of the techniques that are taught are to be used in a situation with a gun.... wow guys get up and actually take a decent martial arts class
Hapkido is a pretty good Martial Art what makes you show so much disrespect for others I do not know, but why not try to act like a True Martial Artist and stop disrespecting someone because they do not practice the same as you.
I was just passing through (trying to self-teach bo staff) and I have to completely agree with you on this point. I took about 8 years of TaeKwonDo and the most important thing I learned was to respect of other people. In my humble opinion, if all an instructor teaches is how to beat someone, they've failed as an instructor.
P.S. You wouldn't happen to know any good bo staff schools in the Dallas/FortWorth area?
Yes i do, i pay for it. I train 3hs a day 4 times a week, and do all the za zen i want to. And believe me, it's harder than being sit 30 min. with your eyes shut. (and your eyed must be actually opened)
My Sensei, btw, is a 78 year old man, who practices all the hours i just said. (and more). Personally, i admire him. And he sits for hours (even days). Oh, and za zen is for free =) everyone can go.
I personaly dont see anything wrong with martial arts becoming a sport, i think it was a good idea however its not for everyone so some people train in martial arts and dont use it in the sport others do each to their own And as for guns i think theres more skill needed than jus pulling the trigger you need to combine combat environment and tactics with training so you dont get killed unless your the type of person to pull a gun on someone in the street thats just cowardly and dishonerable
I think it's a good thing that martial arts give birth to sports, but I think the arts made for war and battle should stay pure. it's good to make sports out of martial arts, but they shouldn't be called martial arts, they should be called something like martial sports.
All the tricks this guy does are useless in a real fight, It looks cool and etc, but it's a waste of time for a marcial artist.
Besides, a real Bo is much longer (i'm talking about 1.80 - 2.00 mts) and heavier. They aren't as easy to manipulate as this guy's 1.20 toy stick XD. Not even a Jo...
Yes I agree that these moves are not designed for combat, but you are stating the obvious. Does he talk about defending off attackers or fighting anyone with these moves NO. This is for competition and it is for attribute building, not every move you do in the martial arts is designed strictly for combat. Some moves and techniques are designed to help build attributes that may help you in any situation. So people please understand when you state the obvious you only make yourself look petty.
Sure, totally right, but still it's not a Bo stick (at least not a traditional one), and i can't help it, i find it useless.
And, what do you mean about attribute building? As far as i know, as a marcial artist, and at least in my karate style, every move is designed to attack or to block, even the intermediaries moves are supposed to block or attack faster and better.
Anyway, no one can say someone is a marcial artist because of being able to do that. It can be done by a cheerleader too XD
What style of Martial Arts do you practice? And why in your opinion is a Martial Artist not allowed to practice any other Martial Arts except the kind you do to be considered a valid Martial Artist? This in my opinion is an incorrect statement as there are many different ways to practice the Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Qi Chong, Wu Shu, Traditional Japanese, Korean, Okinawan, Chinese, MMA, or Extreme, these are all Martial Arts maybe not like the one you practice but they are valid none the less.
I do Shorin Ryu, my Karate school is called Matsubayshi-Ryu. Okinawan.
I think you might be confusing Marcial Arts and Marcial Sports. Marcial Sports, like any other sport, are designed to train your body, and maybe your speed, etc. Marcial Arts not only train your body, it also trains your mind and your spirit. There is a phrase in Shorin Ryu: Karate and Zen as unit. That explains it all, and that's why i think these tricks are a waste of time for someone who gives his life to Marcial Arts.
Anyway, MarTial Arts have already a use! I said it before, it's not just about learning how to kick some asses, that is what guns are made for, it's about you and the enemies within yourself. That's when Karate turns into Karate-Do, it's a path, not just a lot of techniques.
In my dojo we also do Za-Zen. We sit every day, 30 minutes. Then we train. Ken Zen Ichi Nyo: Karate and Zen as unit.
Martial arts were designed for combat, so if these moves are not for combat then they are not martial arts moves!
Its basically turning a system that people worked hard to create to defend themselves and ultimately survive, into a sport. I'm sorry but it's just wrong!
Yes Martial Arts was also designed for combat as well as a way of life. The Samurai practiced writing, art, and other things that helped them with their Martial Arts. This is for competition and has nothing to do with combat. This is for demos. So please get off of you high horse and stop trying to make your self seem more important by bad mouthing someone else. Yes we all know you traditional elitists think yours is the only way but wake up and realize there are other martial arts out there.
I can say the same thing about you! I am just responding to your know it all comments and now you are telling me to shut up because you say I am a know it all and that I should just agree with you. Sorry that will not happen. Martial Arts sport is here to stay and is good for the Martial Arts.
I'm not narrow minded I'm just a traditional practitioner. I practice the old way. You have to stop tyring to be smart as it's not doing you much good!
@ShotokanKarateMan1 if you are a true martial artist you should be open to all forms of martial arts including some that you may not like. you have to have respect for those who participate in that form of martial arts.
@ShotokanKarateMan1 it depends on your perception of a martial art, using a bo for tricks is obviously not a martial art, but the use of the bo staff as a weapon is. a martial art is a series of movements in order to defeat an opponent, therefore you cannot say one martial art that is better than another, it all depends on how the fighter utilises what he/she has been taught
i love the bo staff its my wepon of choice, 300 shaolin monks fended of a whole army with nothing more then bo staffs 1100 yearsa ago, the bow staff cud be used to block arrows with the spining motion, ive taught my self the bo staff over the past 10 years and wud realy love to no wer i can go to perfect my techniques as i cant find a dojo around here that teaches the bo staff! ill make a video soon and upload it
i like this guys stuff but i think its funny how he introduces himself lol. "!i! am Nate Andrade" like we wouldent beleive him if he said it any other way lolz
That's where I got mine. I would recommend a Tapered Hardwood Bo to start out with. It's inexpensive, extremely durable, and well balanced. Plus, the heavier weight will help a lot with building up the arm muscles you'll use for staff training.
When you get to the more showy stuff, like in this video, you should go for a good graphite bo. They're kinda expensive, so only buy one if you're going to keep up staff training.
i believe that it is good to know both - fighting moves and tricks :) because tricks give you the feel and better control of weapon. so, it is good to develop both skills, fighting and tricking :)
its for show not budo, of course most of it is impractical thats why he calls them tricks, if he called it karate & started doing mad twirling tricks then he would making a mockery of karate.
I am sorry you do not understand that this is not kobudo it is freestyle open sport martial arts which has nothing to do with fighting it is all for entertainment. He never said this was Traditional Karate you just assume that everything has to be traditional Martial Arts or it is not worth anything and that is very small minded.
Technique will only get you so far. You need physical strength to accompany any martial arts training, if you ever hope to be able to defend yourself in a fight. Same goes if you only work on strengthening, not technique.
And you shouldn't rely on your staff in a fight. What happens if you were to lose it, or if you're attacked when you didn't have it with you? It's best to train empty hand before concentrating on weapons.
Yeah, but you're not always going to have it with you. And that's when, if at all, you're going to be attacked. People don't attack someone who's carrying a big stick, they attack someone who has no weapons, and appears to be a defenseless target.
You wouldn't pick a fight with someone carrying a machine gun, would you? It's the same with any other non-concealable weapon.
Yeah, any weapon that you could easily find on the streets is a good choice in weapon practice. Escrima, bo, maybe even tonfa are good, practical weapons.
'Course, open hand should always be the main focus in any martial artist's training. Most forget that the hands, feet, knees, elbows, etc., are all weapons too.
It doesn't matter anyway even if they did pick a fight with him and his so called weapon (cough prop cough) he wouldn't be able to fight with it, he'd just dance with it!
He would not use that Bo staff in a self defense situation. It is for competition only. He is a trained in the martial arts and he does traditional and sport martial arts tournaments.
Yes he would then he would pull his nine and blast the other dudes head off get over it. I hate when ppl bring guns into martial arts but i had to when u were bringing up using the martial arts to fight. There are barely any places martial arts would be used to fight if they hadnt put it in sports becuz now with the invention of the gun... pow pow bye bye martial artist. So the sports give us another way to give martial arts a use.
in 1980 a girl was killed by a homeless man she got rappedn he trowt was cut put this on 5 differev=nt vids or she will appear in ur room and cut ur throwt THIS IS REAL sorry i just dont want to risk it
I figured out the starry night on my own two years ago, seems like whenever I come up with a trick I find out someone else already did it and gave it a shitty name...
who says the tricks wouldn't be useful in a fight(depending on who you're fighting). I'm sure that if you started doing tricks like this as you were getting in a fight with a punk on the street, it would strike some fear in them. Kinda like how kamae display "attitudes"/inermost feelings/convey...things (is that enough slashes?).
i would love to see how this sort of skill would fair in an actual street fight. I mean i seriously doubt that the fancy stuff like this would work, but generally fighting with a bo staff in a real fight, would be interesting to see.
This is not about combat it is freestyle. Does he ever once say anything about combat. Why must everytime a martial artist use a weapon, must it be for combat, there is something called attributes. Look it up if you don't know what it is.
It wasn't me demanding or stating that it wouldn't work in combat, what i clearly meant was i would like to see some sort of real fight with a Bo staff from a pro like this guy, no need to get all high and mighty on me. I'm merely expressing an interest in your video, if thats too much to handle dont put videos up moron.
Thank you for that retract. I was trying to make a point not a dig at you, sorry if it came across that way. I just read so many people who look at a freestyle video and complain because there is no combat application to it. Freestyle is not made for combat it is to build attributes that could be used in anything. I have seen Nate do traditional strikes too this is just for extreme katas.
yeah, it would just be good to see some good bo fighting videos, cos most of them are either with an imaginary opponent, or are set up and crap. lol. Thanks
I know I'm just playing, but ya gotta chuckle a lil bit when Nate looks into the camera so serious and says "The Circus Act" that's the one that got me, the moves still rawk
Yup, without it the business dies or worse, it's forgotten. I need to come up with a cool move and name it, I'm leaning toward,"The V-Man Special" it's gotta nice ring to it ;-)

I've been practicing Taekwondo for 4 years. I recently got my 2nd degree black belt, and I'm training to be an instructor.
As for staff training, I think I started with that in my spare time, about a year and a half ago.
I also train with bokken, tonfa, escrimas, and I just started with the 3 sectional staff.
lol, the 3 sectional scares me. I think I'll take that one really slow until I get a good feel for it. XD

This all looks very fancy. I ofcourse onderstand that it's not for fighting since it's called trickery, but the moves are beutiful.
Rharzut 2 years ago 2
i believe that it is good to know both - fighting moves and tricks :) because tricks give you the feel and better control of weapon. so, it is good to develop both skills, fighting and tricking :)
ugnieshius 2 years ago 2
ya know, some people don't care about fighting
that's why the tricks are so fun
GreenGold33 2 years ago
its for show not budo, of course most of it is impractical thats why he calls them tricks, if he called it karate & started doing mad twirling tricks then he would making a mockery of karate.
aikidunk 2 years ago
mockery of kobudo
tarsonis10 3 years ago
I am sorry you do not understand that this is not kobudo it is freestyle open sport martial arts which has nothing to do with fighting it is all for entertainment. He never said this was Traditional Karate you just assume that everything has to be traditional Martial Arts or it is not worth anything and that is very small minded.

nice to watch but not practical in a fight

you wouldn't use this stuff in a fight just for a performance
TangLung21 2 years ago
you cant use pushups in a fight, why do you practice them? dumb! this stuff is actually to build up your control and skill in staff
devilninjas 2 years ago 2
you practice pushups to get stronger not for a fight moron
TangLung21 2 years ago
ya to get stronger to sleep? why do some one get stronger? to protect himself right!
devilninjas 2 years ago 3
to sleep what the hell are you talking about?
well lets think if your not somewhat strong how do you expect to protect yourself in a real life situation... now you just think about that
TangLung21 2 years ago
I do extreme bo. Let's fight.
njannini 2 years ago
give me one reason why i should
TangLung21 2 years ago
Technique will only get you so far. You need physical strength to accompany any martial arts training, if you ever hope to be able to defend yourself in a fight. Same goes if you only work on strengthening, not technique.
And you shouldn't rely on your staff in a fight. What happens if you were to lose it, or if you're attacked when you didn't have it with you? It's best to train empty hand before concentrating on weapons.
darken27 2 years ago
yes yes we've all heard it before.
the point of extreme style is for performance.
and after training in extreme your traditional style will be much, much better.
you'll have more strength, speed, and doing extreme classes is excellent conditioning.
almost all martial artist who do extreme also do normal martial arts so they know the self-defense.
As for losing the bo. When you get good your bo, it becomes an addition to your body.
hypercrazy85 2 years ago
Unless it is ripped away from you, you wont lose it. especially not if you opponent is open hand.
hypercrazy85 2 years ago
Yeah, but you're not always going to have it with you. And that's when, if at all, you're going to be attacked. People don't attack someone who's carrying a big stick, they attack someone who has no weapons, and appears to be a defenseless target.
You wouldn't pick a fight with someone carrying a machine gun, would you? It's the same with any other non-concealable weapon.
darken27 2 years ago
yeah, but pretty much any long stick would work.
im not saying that its not a good thing to train with open hand because that is wrong.
but if you have the chance to grab some kind of stick your chance of defending yourself greatly rises.
hypercrazy85 2 years ago
Yeah, any weapon that you could easily find on the streets is a good choice in weapon practice. Escrima, bo, maybe even tonfa are good, practical weapons.
'Course, open hand should always be the main focus in any martial artist's training. Most forget that the hands, feet, knees, elbows, etc., are all weapons too.
darken27 2 years ago
It doesn't matter anyway even if they did pick a fight with him and his so called weapon (cough prop cough) he wouldn't be able to fight with it, he'd just dance with it!
ShotokanKarateMan1 2 years ago
He would not use that Bo staff in a self defense situation. It is for competition only. He is a trained in the martial arts and he does traditional and sport martial arts tournaments.
karatevideoguy 2 years ago
Yes he would then he would pull his nine and blast the other dudes head off get over it. I hate when ppl bring guns into martial arts but i had to when u were bringing up using the martial arts to fight. There are barely any places martial arts would be used to fight if they hadnt put it in sports becuz now with the invention of the gun... pow pow bye bye martial artist. So the sports give us another way to give martial arts a use.

you wouldnt have the change to turn your saftey off, mate. Youd be dead before you pulled the trigger.
inventiveinsanity 2 years ago
@darken27 absolutely. One must become a weapon before they learn to use one.

Yeah but the guy in the video doesn't know how to use his "weapon" in a fight anyway!

I figured out the starry night on my own two years ago, seems like whenever I come up with a trick I find out someone else already did it and gave it a shitty name...
KamuiTa 3 years ago
Karatevideoguy would you by chance know where I could find a full copy of this dvd?
I would very much like to advance further with Bo staff and this definitely seems the way to go.
Thanks regards........

This comment has received too many negative votes show
whatever happened to taking the long stick and bashing someones head in? everything's about showmanship now.
dynasty10001 3 years ago
who says the tricks wouldn't be useful in a fight(depending on who you're fighting). I'm sure that if you started doing tricks like this as you were getting in a fight with a punk on the street, it would strike some fear in them. Kinda like how kamae display "attitudes"/inermost feelings/convey...things (is that enough slashes?).
HaruKodama 3 years ago 7
lol word haru
chetaloris1 3 years ago
i would love to see how this sort of skill would fair in an actual street fight. I mean i seriously doubt that the fancy stuff like this would work, but generally fighting with a bo staff in a real fight, would be interesting to see.
millydook 3 years ago
This is not about combat it is freestyle. Does he ever once say anything about combat. Why must everytime a martial artist use a weapon, must it be for combat, there is something called attributes. Look it up if you don't know what it is.
karatevideoguy 3 years ago
It wasn't me demanding or stating that it wouldn't work in combat, what i clearly meant was i would like to see some sort of real fight with a Bo staff from a pro like this guy, no need to get all high and mighty on me. I'm merely expressing an interest in your video, if thats too much to handle dont put videos up moron.
millydook 3 years ago
Also i retract the moron statement, cos arguing on youtube really annoys me so it would be hypocritical to start insulting etc.
millydook 3 years ago
Thank you for that retract. I was trying to make a point not a dig at you, sorry if it came across that way. I just read so many people who look at a freestyle video and complain because there is no combat application to it. Freestyle is not made for combat it is to build attributes that could be used in anything. I have seen Nate do traditional strikes too this is just for extreme katas.
karatevideoguy 3 years ago
yeah, it would just be good to see some good bo fighting videos, cos most of them are either with an imaginary opponent, or are set up and crap. lol. Thanks

I know I'm just playing, but ya gotta chuckle a lil bit when Nate looks into the camera so serious and says "The Circus Act" that's the one that got me, the moves still rawk
Vman9484 4 years ago
I agree but you won't forget it will you ? Marketing is the name of the game.
karatevideoguy 4 years ago
Yup, without it the business dies or worse, it's forgotten. I need to come up with a cool move and name it, I'm leaning toward,"The V-Man Special" it's gotta nice ring to it ;-)
