  • Thanks man u r very good at what u do. I love workin on cars but that's a little too much for me. Very helpful u r my inspiration to pay somebody else to do it for me.... with a warranty lol. Keep it up!!

  • You sure the hell do earn your money.

  • Fantastic! heatercore replaced! Thank you, you rock!

  • Very well done, I was wanting to change the vacum hose on my 1997 ford escort, looks like all I have to do is remove the glove compartment but if ever I have to do the heater core I'll know what to do. The 1997 modle isn't much different. I saw someone else do a heater core once on a van. He was not thrilled to do it. Good to have a refresher course.

  • that would suck putting back together if you remember where all the wires and screws in the right place.

  • Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! This video is a total life saver! I followed your perfectly detailed instructions and I now have a heater...

  • @DolphinFart It is a nice little job to do on a lazy Saturday.

  • Expert detailed Video!! Took work just to do the video right...Very precise; great close ups and time precise! I wish you had done an 80s Towncar. My nightmare would be after the job, i.e.-- Oh oh how come the whatcha ma call it doesn't work? OMG I forgot to hook up something. Gotta tear it all apart again#*(*!@!! OR why do I still have 6 bolts laying around?

  • I think I'd rather tear apart this car's transmission than tackle that job. Looks like lots of opportunities to break brittle plastic. You sir are a master mechanic!

  • hey you did a great job with the video!!!!!!!!!!!

  • a++++++

  • is the 4 bolts the only thing needed to be done to remove the steering column?

  • @tfchui Yes but be careful when you drop it down.I did this job three times because of inferior cores and on the 3rd time the column pulled the ignition partly apart.Which resulted in the engine trying to start when the battery cable was installed.

  • OMG. This car cost more to replace the Heater Core than what the car is worth.

  • I wish this guy were my mechanic! I had a great mechanic in Alabama, but nothing but yahoos so far here in Delray Beach, FL.

  • @richpin06a THANK YOU!!! i was able to download this video, stick it on my phone and use it while i was talking apart my console. This video saved me $650 in labor fees at a mechanic and it was fun as hell!! Everything is reconnected perfectly, heater core blows extremely hot air! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!

  • @HockeyGoon23 Who says you can't have fun replacing a heater code.

  • Great video, changed a 92 Escort core and this video was most helpful. Thanks

  • @bijoukid After you put everything back together you say that wasn't that bad.

  • I'll just put on a sweater while driving.

  • @Moralvorstellung7 O it's not that bad of a job after you do it two or three times.

  • It is a big Peezdets

  • I think I'm going to shoot myself now!!!!!

  • Thanks again for another wonderful video!!!!

You are helping keep my '91 wagon on the road.

I replaced the heater core today in around 5 hours with your help!

    Keep on truckin', rich!!!!!

  • I JUST DID A HEATER CORE CHANGE ON MY 2001 LINCOLN LS. TOOK ME ABOUT A WORKS DAY (6-7hrs) AND SAVED MONEY. GOING TO MECHANIC SCHOOL IS HELPING ME OUT ALOT

  • Whoa! All I heard was remove this, next remove that, remove this. I'm surprised you didn't say remove the doors, wheels, seats etc haha. Must've taken ages lol.

  • remove remove remove.... and here your heater core lol

  • When I bypassed mine in my 99 corvette, i didnt need to cut any holes. Cost me aprox $20 for piece of hose and gal. of antifreeze. Everything works fine, just no heater. Im in Sunny southern Ca and we dont really need heaters out here...

  • Nice thanks for the help im doing this to my 99 dakota next weekend

  • Wow! oMG that;s alot of work. No wonder chevy dealer wants $1100 to repace heater core in my 1999 corvette. Can the heater core just be bypassed? If so, will the ac still work?

  • @OWN12S Most cars the heater core can be bypassed and the AC will work because it is separate from the core.

  • @OWN12S Wowsie...I just bought a 99 Escort wagon that the guy said "needed nothing"..being in Florida I forgot to check the heat...well..(of course) The core is now leaking upon further inspection..geeewwiizzz..I'm screwed I guess...Hope my Mechanic will do the cut a hole option...I ain't payin for a heater core job when I don't ever use heat here in Florida...The A/C did work fine...I think I can even by-pass the core and the a/c should work worse comes to worse...

  • @OWN12S yes it can and yes it will but when winter come yull be wanting that heater back

  • @pensacolasurfer True< but thank heavens i have another vehicle for those cold winter days. I just can't see myself paying all that labor for a part that cost about $100. Maybe i can cut a whole through the firewall! What do you think? Im a cheap B#$t#r@.

  • @OWN12S That's not being a cheap bastard in my book. A hole through the firewall actually is perfectly logical. I came up with that idea a long time ago and now it's time to put it to work. I'm just not certain as to what tool to use to make the cut. A jigsaw with a metal blade may be too long and may damage something on the other side. I'm think maybe a Dremel. What are your thoughts?

  • @Moralvorstellung7 Thinking more of a cordless spiral saw. I used alot in the past to cut holes for 6x9 speakers in older model cars. A Dremel tool would NEVER work. Thier mostly used for small projects. I just need to find out how many layers I'll be cutting. I'll keep you posted cuz its getting alittle colder in Cali and without h-core< i have no front defroster in the morning.

  • @OWN12S Let me ask you this. How does one know for certain that a HC has gone bad? Since I last wrote that post I have concluded that 1. My coolant is full. 2. Reasonably certain my thermostat is fine because my engine light does not light up.(I don't have a temp gauge on my dash, just engine light) 3. My HC has never leaked and both hoses going into the HC are hot, which is normal and not in need of flushing. 4. Fan works fine. I can't figure out why I'm not getting any heat.

  • bout a cheap heater core from napa, Cut a hole in the firewall just about 3/4'' all around the edges of where it will sets, and replaced it using rubber gasket material and 16 ga. steel to cover the hole with 4 small self tapping screws for when it happens again, be damned if i'm gunna go thru all that work atleast twice in the life of this car. Turns a 4-5 hr. job into about 20 min. and there is no problems at all.

  • @babeshedake The downside is you just lost 2 beers you could have had doing the 5r job.....lol

  • @babeshedake

    Just 2?

  • @babeshedake My friend has done the same when his heater core went the first time. He continued on and made a hole in the firewall and manufactured a plate to cover the hole. He then made a template of the position of the hole in the firewall and also the plate that will cover the hole with mounting screws. He has a 1995 Toyota 4Runner that he replaced the heater core on. If he ever needs to replace the heater core again, or in any other 1995 4Runner, he knows where to cut and replace.

  • @j2124856522 What did your friend use to cut the hole? I'm thinking perhaps a Dremel

  • Other signs and symptoms of a sick heater core is (1) leaking antifreeze on the passenger floorboard or (2) if you turn on your defrost and your window fogs up from leaking antifreeze. You may still get luke warm heat but it's really just heat blowing off the engine.

  • Thank You for This Awesome Video! I just recently used your video to repair my own heater core and despite having a good knowledge of cars I was still worried about doing the job. Your video was very helpful and to the point. The job took about 4 hours and fixed my coolant leak and fogging problem. Thank you very much and i will make sure I tell people about richpin videos.

  • @MrsKailynJ Thank you I appreciate the jester very much

  • MY Heater only throws air cold in all the pocisiones… THAT CAN BE

  • Thanks!!! Totally awesome! Saved me hundreds of dollars! Any suggestions on changing a ball joint on the passenger side of a GMC Safari?

  • If my heater core ever breaks this video has inspired me…….to go ahead and buy a new car. Haha, man I hate dashes.

  • You may have been accomplished the most wonderful job by posting this very helpful video for others to see it, and I personally congratulate you for doing so. But unfortunately for me, (ain't no way hell) I'm going to disassembly my entire vehicle dashboard like that just to replace a (Heater core). This part shouldn't never failed in the first place, because this is obviously one of the most outrageous job for any mechanic men to deal with.

  • i bought my heater core from the Ford dealer cause the one from Napa and Lordco were more expensive . I paid 80 bucks plus taxes .This is in Canada.

  • Hi Rich : I would like to express my most sincere gratitude for the awesome video. I followed it to the T and it worked wonderfully. Being a welder I was tempted to cut a hole in the firewall ,oh boy am I glad I didn't do it. It took me five and a half hour to do the whole thing ..My mechanic was going to charge me 7 hours at 80 bucks an hour. You save me a lot of money my friend. God bless you !

  • @ricomaniaco That's great news that you could do it yourself and save a lot of money. One thing i found was if you plan on keeping the car a long time do not get a replacement core from AutoZone as it is inferior core.I say this as i am about to do this job again on this car.

  • if your coolant is full and your not leaking any coolant on the passenger side but your heat isn't hot, is this still a heater core issue?

  • @eishiba10 Start by checking both heater hoses were they go into the heater core at the firewall while the engine is up to temperature. If both are not close to the same temp you have a blockage in the heater core.

  • @richpin06a they are both the same temp but i always thought atleast one was cold.

  • Nice video, thankfully my heater core never went bad after 300k miles of reliable service with my Escort. Looks too painful. That poor Escort needs a bath and then some though! :P

  • @kirbyyasha You were very lucky

  • @richpin06a I think doing regular radiator service helped keep it alive. Doing back flushing by unplugging the heater core from the engine, then attaching a hose to it to get all the gunk out. Did that every 3 years to the car.

  • Great write up, just did my car, took about 6.5 hours. Instructions are spot on. Hint...lay a thick towel or blanket across the e-brake and seat belt components when you remove and lay your dash upside down across them. I punched a small hole in my dash while it was laying there...no biggie, just a warning.

  • @cheeseboynsc Thank you for sharing

  • I'd rather pay someone, lmao!!!

  • @MrRedz2u I guess one mans joy is another ones turmoil........lol

  • Thanks for taking the time to make the video

  • Peter Griffin knows what he's talking about!!! :D

  • @ExhaleTheLight Wait a minute i though it was Ray Romano

  • Total time saver. Awesome video.

  • Couldn't Have done it without it I think".

  • @studderstep51 I got ya...it is a involved job to be sure.

  • This entire job took me about 4 hours to finish thanks to your video. Without it, I would have wasted a whole weekend and swore alot more. If it wasn't for my fat doughnut fingers, I would have had it done even faster. Thanks, much appreciated.

  • @kama96 I know what you are saying a job this involved a video comes in handy.

  • when you see the line going to the core jiggling like the one in this video at 8:22, also look up replacing the rear transmission mount, because it too has gone bad.. the extra movement of the motor, and the very little slack in the coolant line going to that line is useually the cause of the problem in the 1st place. Oh, and if your not in dire straights and need the car, soak the heater box over night in a dish detergant that smells better than antifreeze.

  • @EscortLXDriver95 The loose tube on this car was a result of pulling the hose off for a core flush. The tube on the aftermarket core was not soldered very good.

  • @richpin06a that happens alot too, in which case my family has learned from and we always solder the hoses a little better before adding the aftermarket one. not for the DIY kindda person unless you have done soldering of copper pipes before. Like I said though, great video, very informative.

  • i am sure i can remove all parts perfectly but i am not sure if i can assemble them again????

  • @bugraeraslan O i think you can

  • man thats alot of work

  • I have the same car with 146 000 miles. These are the parts that I replaced on it : Engine, front struts, rear struts with upper mounts, lower ball joints, tie rods, front wheel bearings, drive shafts, calipers, rotors, all brake lines hard and soft, timing belt tension-er bearing, new timing belt. And finally now my heater core needs to be replaced. I was gonna junk the car even thou it runs excellent with the second engine.

  • @Aviatormodel you already have more money in parts than the car is worth, at least in my state. average price of a Escort LX 91-95, $350-$375, with under 150k Mi.

  • @EscortLXDriver95: That's why I don't want to sell it, I am driving it without a heater core, I drive it till it dies, but unfortunatelly winter is coming and I'm not sure how cold can it get on the inside without heat, I'll might bring a bunch of candles and put it on the dashboard:)

  • @Csabika30NY Too funny, exactly the same reason I found this vid!

  • hey man thx great video thx richpin06a now i have a bigger image of my heater usefull

  • @richpin06.. with the haynes manual, heater core replacement for the 98 saturn sl2 seems kinda easy...few things to remove? And, flushing the entire system, if i remove the thermostat, how long do i run/warm up the car with the chemical flush in it? I need a new stant but the mild scent of antifreeze is quite strong now & the car is heating up a bit. So, the core is suspect...

  • @ballershanelle actually, I have found once you fill up the radiator, and the reservour, drive it about a 1/2 mile down the road and back, carefully with a rag open the radiator cap, and fill with warm water, (not cold). and refill the reservour because it will draw water from it. after that, check it every day for the next week or so. As far as the smell, I suggest when you replace the heater core, also soak the box it goes in in some kindda good smelling dish detergant.

  • Buy a haynes or Chiltons manual. It helps out alot.

  • Christ that's a lot of work for a heater core!

  • This is fabulous, we all thank you for showing us how to do this difficult job!!! Tom

  • I had to do this on my wife's car and it took me six hours. It would be a good idea to put some grease on the speedometer head where the cable clips in because Ford did a poor job of doing this at the factory. the result is that the needle would jump all over the place on these cars.

  • My mitsibishi Triton truck has the same drama, i was wondering why my windows were fogging up recently then i realised the problem, coolant on the floor and steam rising up from the floor when the heater was on full! the mechanic said its gonna be a big job, gonna take a few days, ill be lost without my truck :(

  • @punji73 You can bypass the core for now and get to keep you truck.

  • Engine compahtment - are you from Bahston? :-)

  • @sduross personally, I applaud a northern person that works on his or anyones vehicle. Most of my family up north call a "Man" to do everything. they usually pay around $150-$200 for a simple job as this. now why do that when heater cores cost what, $35? Really ppl, don't be lazy, and it will save you a ton.

  • can a clogged heater cause a car to over heat?!!!!!!!1

  • @atoxx1 if the core is clogged.. then i imagine so.. the engine coolant cycles through this (the heater is basically just excess heat used to defog your windows or heat you up) but i dont think ive heard of these clogging up much.. its more than likely either air in the coolant system .. or the thermostat is dead .. if its air.. burp the coolant system.. if its a thermostat .. gotta replace that.. all depends on the car.. could be the fan switch.. several things

  • @nineteenlimbs actually, if you have ever used any kind of temporary fix liquids in your radiator, and did not flush them out properly within a few hours of using them, it will clog the Heater core, Thermostat housing, Block, and Water pump. this is why I don't reccomend these temporary fix liquids. Blew the head gasket in mine 2 times in less than a month before I realized what caused the damage.

  • Break out the chainsaw! ;)

  • This looks like a huge pain in the balls , fuck all that .......Summers coming , wait till fall and loop the 2 hoses for now

  • @SOUTHHEIGHTS9 i dont have that luxury, it is already "fall" here and its bloody cold, need the heater!

  • @SOUTHHEIGHTS9 thats what I'm doing, except don't wait too late and it's starts getting too cold to work on it during the day. that and the price of heating parts rises with the season.

  • wow.......ok i was thinking about getting a new heater core but ill just get an electrical heater for my truck instead, u have to take apart like the whole front of your car haha

  • @psyfertech Not too hard to do, just really time consuming.

  • @fixinggrace yea, i think my truck has good enuff power to run an electric heater when winter comes, its summer now and i have no ac lol, all thats wrong with it is bad O rings and bad pressure switch, compressor looks brand new and works properly so hopefully i can get that goin, i have an s10 btw 95

  • @psyfertech I can't blame you

  • Do those gloves protect your hands good? I was gonna pick up a pair because i always end up cutting my hands when working on my saturn.

  • Yes they do.

  • Doing one right now in a 95 Mercedes-Benz S500

  • That's got to alot of fun... lol

  • Its is! Its a very good learning process. Have to take the whole front of the cab down to frame level. 22 hours book time, Would cost about $3,100 @ the Stealership to do.

  • Hi I was wondering if its similar for a 1995 dodge neon, the heater core is done causing the motor to heat up, my dad says hes going to get rid of it but if I fix it he will give it away to me. Its a effort job but if it is a similar job I will give it a shot.

  • thx for posting this video. Ima make a list of this so I can put in my own heater core and save money

  • all that to replace a heater core?

  • You know they build the car around the heater core. lol

  • remove this, remove that, remove those, remove youre car!!! take it to the junk yard!!!

  • fucking shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what a fucking horrible design in virtually all cars. they should make these things much more accessible

  • wow sure makes you wonder what computer designed that mess..

  • looking forward to taking the heater core out of my lumina van

  • Thankyou very much for posting this, I really appreciate your videos!!!!

    Keep it up!

  • Hell, be easier to buy a different car.......

  • And I don't wanna miss a thaaaaaang!

  • FUCK!!!!!!!!!

im not even going to attempt it after watching this one. GOOD VIDEO THOUGH!!!!!!

  • Why can't a car company make a heater core replacement easier jesus fuckin christ.

  • I love Cartalk but Click and Clack don't have anything compared to you! Thank so much for posting this video. I just finished removing the old heater core and putting in a new one yesterday on my 96 Escort. Don't think I would have touched this job with a ten foot pole without your comforting youtube guidance!

  • Thanks for posting this video! I'm going to be doing an interior swap in my Escort and the removal of the dash was the scariest part in my mind. This video gives me the confidence to do it.

    Thanks!

  • Most excellent video instruction.

  • Thanks for the video This is a life saver. Ok not a life but It will save me alot of time. thanks again

  • Thanks alot!!!!! I have a 94 escort and everything was pretty much the same. I had trouble at first, but then I decided to youtube it, and I was very pleased to find this video. Saved me some big bucks!!!!! Thanks!

  • That has got to be the fastest heater core removal ever. What year is this escort? I have a 2003 that I might be doing this to soon. Thanks for the video, you already helped me replace a wheel bearing before.

  • Wow. So I had coolant leaking into the car, underneath my feet, saturating my carpet. I was pretty upset. I was all for replacing my heater core, but after watching this video...

I feel bad for Alfred when Batman's mobile has its heater core fail.

I also like how your glove box is packed full of shit like mine.

Anyhow, thanks for the video. You're awesome for taking the time to display the procedure.

I'm really going to hate this job.

  • After you do this job about three times it becomes fun....lol

  • Congratulations! This is the best maintenance video clip I saw in the Youtube.

  • this is a form of torture

  • wow what a pain in the ass...My heater's taking for ever to heat my car...I'll check the vent first before attempting this.

  • Also check for a block core.

  • I just completed putting in the heater core after watching the video. Every step was right on the money. It was still a complete pain in the ass but the instruction makes it a logical process. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • what a mess

  • Hey thanks a lot for the great video! I have a 95 escort and the heater core is out. Im gonna do this myself tomorrow!

  • is the core for a 1996 taures locted in th same spot

  • Is there a youtube video made on removing a heater core from a 93 ford taurus???

  • This video both a) makes me miss my first new car...a '93 Mercury Tracer, and b) makes me glad I sold it before the heater core went bad. Good car...and good video. Thanks for posting!

  • It is the 91-96 Escort with the 1.9L engine

  • It is not hard, if you think this is hard, try a Nissan Altima (1993-2001 models)

  • yes

  • how long did that take u?

  • The camera work slowed me down on this one, took all day.

  • THAT amount of work to get to one part is crazy...Ford should be ashamed...

  • Pretty much all cars are like that, the easiest heater core I have ever done is a first generation Ford Ranger.

  • A Toyota mechanic told me he refuses to work on Fords, now I see why.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!

Youve earned the beverage of your choice...

    CHEERS
