It really looks like it only needed a through cleaning. Check out the video of what ours was doing. It now works like brand new after being cleaned. Did your repairman take the burners out of the furnaces to clean them? Ours did. And the culprit was obvious. The orfaces on the flame carry over port were almost totally plugged over burner #2, and all burners were cruddy, with #2 being the worst.
i had same system but power vented directly outside & it still did this. power vent was too loud so had a flue run up side of house, it still did this kaboom crap, eventually i rigged up the electronic ignition to stay on whole time stat called for heat & it never did kaboom again. about a year later i replaced the entire system with a heatpump. how your plastic letters didnt melt is odd, mine melted & fell off about month after system was installed originally.. LOL
My general opinion of Goodmans and Janitrols is that they are okay units, just incredibly noisy. My Grandma has a 3.5-ton Goodman heat pump from 2004 that works perfectly, and the nursing home where my friend works had a Janitrol A/C that lasted 16 years!
We used to have the same furnace with the same problem!! We moved everything away from it because every time it fired it would BOOM and flames would shoot out the front. We just replaced it with a Lennox 80% elite series because of a cracked heat exchanger on the Janitorl, CO2 alarm went off in the middle of the night and the fire department traced it to the furnace. We still have the Janitrol AC unit outside that went with it but being 27 years old we dont expect much more out of it.
Did you get that fixed? the sound of the burner tells me that the gas is firing in the burner tube. and the tube is plugged. you may be ahead replacing the furnace. worst case.
Thanks for your question. Yes, we called someone else right away...it was scary! We paid for the new janitrol parts but yanked the whole unit out directly. I think the tubes (they looked like grooves to me) were rusted and in trying to clean them, the height of the grooves were altered and it didn't fire properly. WEll that's one theory anyway. ha ha.
A furnace is only as good as the person who maintains it, installs it, and repair it. My father has a janitrol identical to that one, and is still heating his home with no problems. I have a new goodman no problems. I have rental homes with goodmans no problems. If people matained their equipment right it'll take care of them.
My point was not to disparage the furnace (it was old) but the manner in which we were left hanging by the repair man. Being told that "it's probably ok" while flames shot out of the furnace each time it fired was a bit disconcerting. I wanted to record what was happening.
I'm pretty sure he cleaned it. We paid him for a new relay box or some type of electronics I believe. I think the burners should have been replaced 'cause there was some corrosion from condensation. Man, that was scary though. It felt like the house was blowing up -- my office is right above the furnace and my chair would shake when it blew.
I would piss myself if this was my heater.

approx how old was that Janitrol furnace? It looks to me like late 70's or early 80's.

Yes, it was forced air and the ac unit is still operating with the new replacement furnace.
