Nevertheless, I do understand his perspective. I would add to it, though, that such a change in the laws needs to be carefully thought through and written, lest the aforementioned "loon" in my earlier comment slip through the cracks.
If teachers were given leeway to take certain measures in restraining their classrooms, no doubt some loon would take it too far against a disrespectful student, end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit, and still be able to hide behind a carelessly written bit of legislation that justifies their actions. Then, who's to say but them whether or not the situation merited physical intervention? Corporal punishment shouldn't have to be a slippery slope. It needs definition.
Physically breaking up a fight, provided no student is injured or traumatized in the act of doing so, is permitted for authority figures where I live, I'm pretty sure. The only question is how a teacher or administrator would go about applying that sort of discipline without stepping over the line, which they would have to do to be effective. The blanket laws against a teacher using a switch among other things prevent confusion in court as to what can and can't be done.
I'm not sure where i stand on this because one of the teachers at my old school tried to physically restrain a troublemaker and ended up breaking his arm :s
but on the plus side the classroom was quieter for a while :]
I agree, I think that teachers should have some more physical freedom in the class room. I've seen and heard many incidents were just some physical hold backing a student would of made the situation a lot better.
my school did this, but I live in the states. Private schools can do this shit, and I think public schools can also, but they have to tget permission from the parents. Which yea my mom signed that permission sheet the second I stepped into the building XD
For heaven's sakes never leave the Tories anywhere near the education system! Victorian values and everything smelling of Jeyes Fluid again - yuk. First off; Cameron went to Eton, everyone Cameron knows went to Eton... if his kids don't go to Eton it's only because they're female. This man wouldn't understand an unruley classroom if he was locked in one for a year.

2. I don't think those cases where physical violence is very rare at all. being able to use force to physically remove a pupil i can see being very beneficial.

Surely allowing this would simply prove more problematic though? I mean I know you say it would need to be very clearly regulated, but it is by it's very nature a hugely grey area. Couldn't it just cause more confusion and upset?

David Cameron is correct in his aims. Realistically, the precedence of EU Law in this area will make these aims very remote. Classrooms are now very litigious places. An educational correspondent and I count the number of teachers that we know that have hastily left the profession (and then gone into one to one occupations or had nervous breakdowns, not funny).
It's basically too late (now) to overturn the huge amount of statutory leglislation already introduced in this area.
In the Philippines, where I studied pre-school, corporal punishments were put into practice. [I don't think they do that anymore, though. Except maybe in rural areas..] Teachers actually hit 3 year old students for repeatedly going against instructions. It wasn't that bad, but it David Cameron's suggestion is definitely much...fairer. :|
~<3 Great vid. Informational and fairly amusing. xD
With all the wiseass kids in the UK, I'm all for teachers beating the living crap out of the students.... Don't worry, guys. Just kidding. Love the UK.
yes! order must be restored! teachers are letting kids run riot around them these days they totally take the cheek all they do is send them to time out during class to get rid of them. If i was a teacher i would totally make them wish they never miss behaved.
The cane made me realise that there was a price to pay for doing wrong.today the cane is out and nothing has taken its place so we have bad behaviour in classes.Give em 50 lines, that will send em running.:-)
I once volunteered in a classroom of 6 year olds. This one kid was very violent with me. He would find hard objects, and come up behind me and hit me on the head with them repeatedly!! Up until that point, I would have laughed at someone who said they got beat up by a 6 year old, but I was afraid to touch the kid, you know, to take the object out of his hand and to grab his wrist to prevent him from hitting me. I guess I'm saying is that I understand the need to restrain children!
hmm, I would be a little hesitant to support any legislation allowing teachers to use any type of physical force to control their students, only because I've had some pretty crazy teachers over the years--I was once in a classroom when a teacher THREW A DESK at a student. so I agree--such legislation would have to be very specific about what is acceptable and what is not.
They should probably draw the line at throwing desks--throwing chairs might be ok though. :)
The use of physical force or punishments in the classroom is a difficult subject. There is a history of teachers using corporeal punishment to the point of abuse, but the fact remains that some students will respond to nothing less.
Kids are quite durable, though. Maybe teachers should be allowed to do as they wish as long as there are no broken bones or disfiguring scars... Nah, probably not.
Indeed.Well I agree with this because neds (Non Educated Delinquents,I believe you lot call them CHAVs)generally act like dicks, disrupting others education.Allowing teachers to actually put them out would probably help, plus they can't act like the 'big man' anymore because they were put outside physically by a teacher. Before this goes through though,Childrens rights groups will storm parliment wih ak-47s,demanding respect for young criminals.
Absolutely teachers shouldn't be kept from doing their jobs for fear of getting in trouble for it, although where to draw the line is extremely tricky. I don't think it can be left to the teachers judgment what constitutes reasonable force so there does need to rules about what a teacher can and can't do to their kids and it's probably better to be too safe rather than too sorry.
Hear hear! All hail Jazza, his opinions and thoughts are just.
It's so true, children are always screeching "I'll sue ya! I'll 'ave ya!" whenever the teacher threatens punishment. It's revolting, especially as it can actually happen.
I don't agree with physical discipline, but I can't help wondering why children, and even adults, are now so ghastly and unruly, compared to schoolchildren and citizens in the mid-20th Century when there was a major difference in disciplinary techniques. Hmmm.
It was a more "status quo" style society... does that make sense. now social status like class has been all mushed up. so people's roles, whether it's in terms of husband and wife, the class system or studen and teacher.
without order there is chaos... which is kinda an obvious statement.
I agree with this. We mollycoddle (great word, eh?) this generation of children and it's not doing them any good. Giving teachers explicit rights to physically restrain violent or disruptive pupils is a great step in the right direction.
I just want to say that you should post your vlogs whether they are shit or not. I would watch your videos even if you were telling your favourite recipes for cooking babies.
I understand why the whole "hands off" the students was made. But I know a teacher that was fired for touching a student's shoulder to get his attention.
ok so i just subscribed(yay!) and am planing on watching ALL of your vids this weekend....also, yay for having 100 videos for me to watch, can't wait!

matiou479 3 years ago
With all the wiseass kids in the UK, I'm all for teachers beating the living crap out of the students.... Don't worry, guys. Just kidding. Love the UK.

yes! order must be restored! teachers are letting kids run riot around them these days they totally take the cheek all they do is send them to time out during class to get rid of them. If i was a teacher i would totally make them wish they never miss behaved.

The cane made me realise that there was a price to pay for doing wrong.today the cane is out and nothing has taken its place so we have bad behaviour in classes.Give em 50 lines, that will send em running.:-)

Your impression was most satisfactory. I actually thought I was listening to David Cameron himself.
Order must be restored to society for it's own good!

chocoholicchica3 3 years ago
Yes, anything smaller than a chair should be ok... then you can't see the scars. And of corse there should be tight rules.
rhymingwithoranges 3 years ago
The use of physical force or punishments in the classroom is a difficult subject. There is a history of teachers using corporeal punishment to the point of abuse, but the fact remains that some students will respond to nothing less.
Kids are quite durable, though. Maybe teachers should be allowed to do as they wish as long as there are no broken bones or disfiguring scars... Nah, probably not.
maniacalmike 3 years ago
Indeed.Well I agree with this because neds (Non Educated Delinquents,I believe you lot call them CHAVs)generally act like dicks, disrupting others education.Allowing teachers to actually put them out would probably help, plus they can't act like the 'big man' anymore because they were put outside physically by a teacher. Before this goes through though,Childrens rights groups will storm parliment wih ak-47s,demanding respect for young criminals.
BeanStovi 3 years ago
I am aware of the "NEDs" termonology, and yes there probably will be an unroar if this is passed. But I think it is necessairy.
As for respecting young criminals, i think we NEED to, because we can kick them out of our classrooms but we can't kick them out of our society.
rhymingwithoranges 3 years ago
Absolutely teachers shouldn't be kept from doing their jobs for fear of getting in trouble for it, although where to draw the line is extremely tricky. I don't think it can be left to the teachers judgment what constitutes reasonable force so there does need to rules about what a teacher can and can't do to their kids and it's probably better to be too safe rather than too sorry.
thetreeorthebear 3 years ago
Hmmm.

It was a more "status quo" style society... does that make sense. now social status like class has been all mushed up. so people's roles, whether it's in terms of husband and wife, the class system or studen and teacher.
without order there is chaos... which is kinda an obvious statement.
rhymingwithoranges 3 years ago
Hitting children. That happened to me once. It was in a school play... It hurt like hell.

P.S. Babies are excellent in soup. So tender.

I understand why the whole "hands off" the students was made. But I know a teacher that was fired for touching a student's shoulder to get his attention.
So I agree with you!!!!
