@dagable hey skippy, Dan Gable was an amauter wrestling against professionals. Never since were the Americans at such a disadvantage. My two cents and worth avery penny. But that simith single is evil sweet.
The real shame is that countries could only qualify one wrestler. I believe these two likely would have been 1 and 2, or worst 1 and 3. Although some say the '84 gold Lewis won was tainted due to the boycott, he ended up beating Sarkisian in a dual (?). Who is the only person I can think of who beat Smith internationally.
Smith was in his prime Lewis had already won gold in the '84 games and was on the 1980 team that had boycot the olympis. The great thing was that the Americans dominated this weight class for many years - after Smith would win gold in the 88 & 92 Olympics, Cross would also win gold in Atlanta at the same weight
It looks like Lewis' knee got hurt towards the end. Not that it would have changed the outcome because Smith was already winning, but it was clear he was in pain. The guy beat Smith earlier in the Trials and his only misfortune was having to wrestle in the same time frame as John Smith or he would have had a good shot at a second gold medal.
Smith still has the best single leg takedown technique in the history of the sport. Amazing how he can make it look like shooting in on the best wrestlers and even in the world seem so easy.
Wow, what a great thing it is to watch 2 of America's greatest wrestlers go at it which such contrasting styles. The only thing I wonder is how Smith in his peak would have matched up against Brands in his peak. I just couldn't imagine who would win that.
i am sorry but tom brands is not in the same league as john smith. smith at his peak is the best of all time. brands at his peak is not even close to smith. give me a break, you are out of your mind!!!!!!!!
While I agree that Smith wins in their primes, it's A LOT closer than you think. They are in the same league. Look at these matches; Lewis much slower than Brands. While Smith has the best single, Brand's shot damn damn good as well. Smith just a bit quicker, brands stronger, the CLOSE edge goes to Smith. Brands allowed ONE point for his gold, he dominated his olympics more so than Smith did his.
@DrJoseSanchez Brands was at his "peak" for a couple of years. John Smith was in his peak throughout his entire international career, which started when he was 20 yrs old, and still in college.
Too bad both were wrestling injured...

Smith dismantled him in '91 and would have done the same against a prime Brands. Brands didn't place in the worlds in '95 or '94.
