Sea The Stars was never tested to the Max. - he's the horse that would have dug deep and pulled a bit more out if anything had of came to within a neck of him. But nothing got that close.

Sea the stars is one of the best horses ever. Only Dancing Brave could have lived with him. Frankel seems something special too. Lets see how he performs in the Derby if he gets the trip

Then, with all the juvenile success that Frankel had, he's now being billed as the one to eclipse STS. Both Workforce and Frankel are great colt's in their own right. No doubt about it. But what STS accomplished is extremely rare and very special. Workforce or Frankel will never close to doing what STS did in his career, IMO.

it was just great to see a horse finally do the Guineas / Derby double . Been hooked on racing since accidently catching the Las Meninas/ Balanchine 1000 in 1994 and it had never happened . All the stuff that followed was icing on top of the cake and each race was a major event . Truly great for all us fans of racing . STS was a great horse but quoting him better than Sea Bird II which is totally ridiculous. He won group ones on the bridle against top fields STS never did that, Hence timeform rating Sea Bird the greatest ever. STS was good but Sea Bird, Dancing Brave, Nijinsky are better for Me...

In my opinion Frankel will be the best miler next year, Im not sure he will line up at Epsom but I certainly feel he's the one to beat in the 2000 Guineas after his win at Newmarket in the Dewhurst., He could possibly race in the Greenham stakes before the Guinea's...

@horseracingfan, I agree 110% with that. When it comes to turf racing. There's none tougher in the world than you see the horses from Ireland and Great Britain racing and winning in. I've often referred to Ireland as the country where champions are made. Look at all the great horses from Ireland and Great Britain that have raced at the Curragh or Leopardstown. Shergar, Giant's Causeway, Galileo, Sea The Stars. Nowadays, even horses like Fame and Glory, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman.
This race, IMO, is the one big mistake that Johnny Murtagh made riding for Ballydoyle. Choosing to ride Rip Van Winkle over Fame and Glory over 12 furlongs. I personally think that Fame and Glory is twice the colt that Rip Van Winkle is. Juddmonte International Stakes win and all. I'd bet Fame and Glory to beat RVW any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Not that STS was going to be beaten in this race. But Murtagh had a better shot on F&G than RVW. As the result's clearly bared that fact out.

@slickwillywize It is a good question.In his favour-mainly left handed and usually quick ground.Against-uphill,downhill requiring a very well balanced horse.He may have been slightly too big an animal to show his best here and would really depend on the opposistion.Lester always said how nimble a horse needs to be around Epsom,short and stocky(The Minstrel and Shergar being perfect examples).Sec was a very big long striding animal who's ability to gallop things into submission was awesome....

@GBeret83 Ive only seen the videos with the superman music in back lol Unbelievable, I think he also unofficially holds the Preakness record aswell but there was a malfunction with the timer and whatever time he got has only been equalled and never beaten. His Belmont time of 2.24 cannot be beaten, its just impossible. 12 seconds a furlong over a mile and a half is just perfection, perfect blend of speed and stamina and it would be hard to find a horse ever who would have beaten him that day.

@147ard All out?He was only doing what he had to do-as ever.Said it before,say it again.Because of this he was able to hold his form better than any horse in the last 40-50 years including Sea Bird,who because of his nervous disposistion,was underraced and Dancing Brave who somehow lost in the Derby but whom also had a 2 month break before his prep for the Arc.STS to me,is the most COMPLETE horse of this 40-50 year era who also improved both physically and in the form book with every run.
Have you seen the Coral Eclipse or the Arc? If you've seen those races and understand how horses run, then it should be blindingly clear that Sea The Stars idles when he gets to the front. Kinane and Oxx have confirmed this time and time again as well.
Do you believe that STS was only capable of sprinting for 100 meters in the Arc and he was spent after that? Or that in the Eclipse he was going all out and Rip Van Winkle ran up to him and just faded (instead of STS picking up)?

i think the main reason he wasnt favourite was because the majority maybe thought there was a stamina doubt, in hindsight he stays every yard. the punters, including myself, went for fame and glory who had romped the derby trials in ireland and was a guarenteed stayer, he took the same route as previous winners galileo and high chaparral

I personally think the mistake that Aiden O'Brien made was not running Mastercraftsman with Rip Van Winkle in the Classic. I think M.C. would have made a better accounting of himself in the Classic than he did in the B.C. Dirt Mile.

I strongly agree!! My copy arrived last week. I especially recommend Racing Post's Sea the Stars book for American racing fans (like me). In addition to many excellent photos, it helps those less familiar with European racing to appreciate what the excitement is all about. An excellent tribute to a GREAT horse! If it were published in the US it would definitely garner an Eclipse award.
I don't think enough credit has been given to Mick Kinane. His tactics and handling of the horse were excellent in nearly every race, especially in the Arc when STS looked a little frisky at the beginning.
Outstanding horse and a disgrace that Generous was rated above Sea The Stars but none of them would compare with the brilliant Dancing Brave. I know everyone can argue the Derby issues but the jockey not the horse lost the race. Greville Starkey should have got 30yrs in jail for what he did.

I saw Secretariat in Belmont... Ghostzapper, great horse and great performance in Breeders Cup 2004. And Skip Away? Don't like? Is best you see the race of B.Cup in 1997. Today, unfortunately there is no such horses. If there Zenyatta would not have won the Breeders Cup. And if offered 90 millions for Sea the Stars, today, Gostzapper and Skip Away offered 360 millions. 90 millions for each hull.
GB. I saw Kelso, Troy and Kingston Town racing. None of these compare with the mighty Zenyatta. You have to go right back to Kincsem to get up to this standard. My favorite British horse is Eclipse. Sea the Stars is not in this league. Too pampered.

Nah, it's guesswork, I know, but Sea The Stars would have destroyed the likes of Eclipse or Kinscem ( despite her great record ).
Eclipse, according to historical records, had the most eccentric style of racing; his nose almost touching the ground as he raced. The nags he faced were an inordinately poor bunch. Most of them couldn't get the chestnut off the bit and very few bothered to take him on.

I live in Kentucky, only about an hour from thoroughbred country. American's can argue over who's the better horse, Zenyatta, or Rachael Alexandra, but this horse, now retired, would destroy either one of our champion females, imo. And I say that being a huge Zenyatta fan.

Sea The Stars was never tested to the Max. - he's the horse that would have dug deep and pulled a bit more out if anything had of came to within a neck of him. But nothing got that close.

STS sits there like Haile Gabrselassie and then puts his amazing turn-of-foot pace into gear when needed, only needs to beat them by a length (thats all he needs) ''You can only beat what is infront of you'' and ''The hourse of a life-time'' did just that, what a class act maybe never to be eclipsed again. dunnejamez, After Workforce's impressive maiden win and track record in the Epsom Derby, he was built up as being the one who would eclipse STS. Then, with all the juvenile success that Frankel had, he's now being billed as the one to eclipse STS. Both Workforce and Frankel are great colt's in their own right. No doubt about it. But what STS accomplished is extremely rare and very special. Workforce or Frankel will never close to doing what STS did in his career, IMO.

it was just great to see a horse finally do the Guineas / Derby double . Been hooked on racing since accidently catching the Las Meninas/ Balanchine 1000 in 1994 and it had never happened . All the stuff that followed was icing on top of the cake and each race was a major event . Truly great for all us fans of racing . Many thanks for posting and all you other guys who upload these great races

@altormey You haven't a clue, Did you see the field Dancing Brave beat in the Arc? Its probably the best assembled in Europe since Sea Bird II won his in 1965. He demolished them in record time. STS was a great horse but quoting him better than Sea Bird II which is totally ridiculous. He won group ones on the bridle against top fields STS never did that, Hence timeform rating Sea Bird the greatest ever. STS was good but Sea Bird, Dancing Brave, Nijinsky are better for Me...

In my opinion Frankel will be the best miler next year, Im not sure he will line up at Epsom but I certainly feel he's the one to beat in the 2000 Guineas after his win at Newmarket in the Dewhurst., He could possibly race in the Greenham stakes before the Guinea's...

@horseracingfan, I agree 110% with that. When it comes to turf racing. There's none tougher in the world than you see the horses from Ireland and Great Britain racing and winning in. I've often referred to Ireland as the country where champions are made. Look at all the great horses from Ireland and Great Britain that have raced at the Curragh or Leopardstown. Shergar, Giant's Causeway, Galileo, Sea The Stars. Nowadays, even horses like Fame and Glory, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman.

This race, IMO, is the one big mistake that Johnny Murtagh made riding for Ballydoyle. Choosing to ride Rip Van Winkle over Fame and Glory over 12 furlongs. I personally think that Fame and Glory is twice the colt that Rip Van Winkle is. Juddmonte International Stakes win and all. I'd bet Fame and Glory to beat RVW any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Not that STS was going to be beaten in this race. But Murtagh had a better shot on F&G than RVW. As the result's clearly bared that fact out.

@slickwillywize It is a good question.In his favour-mainly left handed and usually quick ground.Against-uphill,downhill requiring a very well balanced horse.He may have been slightly too big an animal to show his best here and would really depend on the opposistion.Lester always said how nimble a horse needs to be around Epsom,short and stocky(The Minstrel and Shergar being perfect examples).Sec was a very big long striding animal who's ability to gallop things into submission was awesome....

@GBeret83 Ive only seen the videos with the superman music in back lol Unbelievable, I think he also unofficially holds the Preakness record aswell but there was a malfunction with the timer and whatever time he got has only been equalled and never beaten. His Belmont time of 2.24 cannot be beaten, its just impossible. 12 seconds a furlong over a mile and a half is just perfection, perfect blend of speed and stamina and it would be hard to find a horse ever who would have beaten him that day.

@147ard All out?He was only doing what he had to do-as ever.Said it before,say it again.Because of this he was able to hold his form better than any horse in the last 40-50 years including Sea Bird,who because of his nervous disposistion,was underraced and Dancing Brave who somehow lost in the Derby but whom also had a 2 month break before his prep for the Arc.STS to me,is the most COMPLETE horse of this 40-50 year era who also improved both physically and in the form book with every run.

Have you seen the Coral Eclipse or the Arc? If you've seen those races and understand how horses run, then it should be blindingly clear that Sea The Stars idles when he gets to the front. Kinane and Oxx have confirmed this time and time again as well.
Do you believe that STS was only capable of sprinting for 100 meters in the Arc and he was spent after that? Or that in the Eclipse he was going all out and Rip Van Winkle ran up to him and just faded (instead of STS picking up)?

i think the main reason he wasnt favourite was because the majority maybe thought there was a stamina doubt, in hindsight he stays every yard. the punters, including myself, went for fame and glory who had romped the derby trials in ireland and was a guarenteed stayer, he took the same route as previous winners galileo and high chaparral

Don't remember Nijinsky,Mill Reef,The Minstrel and particularly Llammtarra(who broke the track record) winning by very far.Motivator won by 5 lengths yet do you honestly think he would have beaten STS?Lest we forget,what did Sharastani beat other than a horrendously unlucky DB?It was perfectly o.k for DB to idle in his King George win but not for STS in ALL of his?I'm with you Green.

Opinions are what racing is all about through betting for the man in the street, right up to the official handicapper at the jokey club!It does seem though that no matter what this animal acheived some will crad him.They would argue the opposite of me and you.Simple fact though to me which I don't think can be argued is that he's one of the few,maybe only,of the modern champs that we never really saw the best of due to his tendency of self preservation.That,to me is why he has his unique record.

I personally think the mistake that Aiden O'Brien made was not running Mastercraftsman with Rip Van Winkle in the Classic. I think M.C. would have made a better accounting of himself in the Classic than he did in the B.C. Dirt Mile.

I strongly agree!! My copy arrived last week. I especially recommend Racing Post's Sea the Stars book for American racing fans (like me). In addition to many excellent photos, it helps those less familiar with European racing to appreciate what the excitement is all about. An excellent tribute to a GREAT horse! If it were published in the US it would definitely garner an Eclipse award.

I don't think enough credit has been given to Mick Kinane. His tactics and handling of the horse were excellent in nearly every race, especially in the Arc when STS looked a little frisky at the beginning.

Outstanding horse and a disgrace that Generous was rated above Sea The Stars but none of them would compare with the brilliant Dancing Brave. I know everyone can argue the Derby issues but the jockey not the horse lost the race. Greville Starkey should have got 30yrs in jail for what he did.

I see the American morons are out in force again on a video about a European race/horse. American's seem to have a very unattractive disease where they think everything has to come to them and they think that they are somehow the yardstick for greatness (ha) and rulers of all the universe. In fact sod it, I think I might go on a Zenyatta video and say how her handlers are cowards b/c they won't bring her to Europe b/c they are scared.

The whole European argument over Zenyatta,as good as she is,is the fact that Twice Over is too close to her.He is rated officially 12lbs behind STS.He may actually have improved by the U.S conditions,but I would have been amazed if he got that close to STS.

American horses run on level, left handed, tight courses - and invariably with assisted "medication."
European horses; especially British and Irish racehorses, have to encounter straight,, left-handed, right handed, undulating, tight, galloping tracks - in short, more varying, and altogether more testing. I backed Zenyatta. She's a great race mare and proved her liking for Santa Anita and the pro ride surface. I just wonder how she would have coped on a left-handed undulating track like Epsom

rip van winkle would have distroyed zenzatta during the summer he was running on a tight track on a surface he never ran on and has health problems and didnt run at all so you obviously dont know what you are talking about europes winning rate at the breeders cup was much higher than americas you idiot 28 horses not even the best horses were there and we still won 6 races

I saw Secretariat in Belmont... Ghostzapper, great horse and great performance in Breeders Cup 2004. And Skip Away? Don't like? Is best you see the race of B.Cup in 1997. Today, unfortunately there is no such horses. If there Zenyatta would not have won the Breeders Cup. And if offered 90 millions for Sea the Stars, today, Gostzapper and Skip Away offered 360 millions. 90 millions for each hull.

GB. I saw Kelso, Troy and Kingston Town racing. None of these compare with the mighty Zenyatta. You have to go right back to Kincsem to get up to this standard. My favorite British horse is Eclipse. Sea the Stars is not in this league. Too pampered.

Nah, it's guesswork, I know, but Sea The Stars would have destroyed the likes of Eclipse or Kinscem ( despite her great record ).
Eclipse, according to historical records, had the most eccentric style of racing; his nose almost touching the ground as he raced. The nags he faced were an inordinately poor bunch. Most of them couldn't get the chestnut off the bit and very few bothered to take him on.

Won 18 - yes... 8 of which were walkovers. In other words, no race took place on those eight occasions as the cart and farm horses failed to turn up. He also won a match race against Bucephelus ( no, not AtG's great nag ! ). The remaining nine races were against horses which wouldn't win a selling race in Britain these days.
Nevertheless, he was still a good horse in his own right, and 90% of all modern day throughbreds can be traced through him.

If Rip van Winkel, the second best horse of Ireland was tenth in Breeders Cup, Sea the Stars have been in the eight,in the best. Ireland only has a great horse: Goldikova.

conduit is irish goldikova rip van winkle sea the stars all irish horses conduit is only after winning back to back races in the breeders cup rip van winkle beat him by 2 lenghts this year rip van winkle is a much better horse than you think but he has serious health problems he just didnt run his race at all when you take into consideration there were only 28 european horses at the breeders cup and they managed to win 6 or 7 races awhile they were hundreds of american horses there do the math

see if you want to be stupid and take rips run in bc literally? then why dont you look at twice over's run at sandown, where he got beat 18 lengths by sea the stars. zenyatta beat twice over by 2 maybe 3 lengths. So there we have it, concrete 100% PROOF that sea the stars would have beat zenyatta at least 15 lengths. You must be fuckin crazy. Unfortunatley it dosent work like that or wed all be millionaires. Sea The Stars has been tested at every type of classic distance and on every level and has not only succeeded but has without fail absolutely crushed and humiliated each and every competitor accomplishing feats not seen in many decades. The reason he is doubtful to ever run again is that the risk of injury far outweighs his value as a stud now.

Sea the Stars is equal to Zeniatta.Go back, save, to win in sprint. A horse with great class, a super-horse, is always in front from start to finish. I have been saying that he is the best horse in all times..Who says it should be admitted to mental hospital.If he worth 75 millions, Secretariat worth 75 billions. I hope Sea the Stars go Dubai next year. Despite to be a diferent horse Overdose seems that will be also. Overdose wins with a quarter of a furlong.Guaranteed.Will see.

I live in Kentucky, only about an hour from thoroughbred country. American's can argue over who's the better horse, Zenyatta, or Rachael Alexandra, but this horse, now retired, would destroy either one of our champion females, imo. And I say that being a huge Zenyatta fan.
