I think the original scene in platoon is much much funnier.Mainly,because it was trying to be serious.I mean come on,dafoe's ham fisted acting,that corny score playing...again,and then sheen attempting to look angry.Put it all together it's alot more comedic than tropic thunder.In fact all of platoon is a laugh a minute,the acting is some of the worst,but sheen makes it completely hilarious.Not just his acting,but the dialouge he was given,and that voiceover lol.Full metal jacket is untouchable.

I think both of the films do an EXCELLENT job of portraying the reality of the Vietnam war and the loss of the innocence or the birth of bloodlust or killer instinct that the environment nurtured the soldiers with. To be honest, the death of Elias in Platoon was not one of the greatest moments of the film. And Platoon emphasized and dramatized many of the core elements that were common place in the war in order to tell its story and place its commentary.

@rocksparadox But Platoon has a place in my heart BECAUSE of it's blatant and dramatized portrayal of the elements that created the Vietnam War. It's blank characters with their solid personalities and convictions (either created by the war or social settings) helped drive it's story along and create very simple yet meaningful conflicts among the members of the platoon. And that was only one of the reasons why I think the larger commentaries that the movie made were satisfied.

@rocksparadox Now, don't get me wrong, Stanley Kubrick's focused effort on the flatness and undramatic direction of the movie was a very great move because it helped show how horribly commonplace the events of the movie were in the actual war (making the events look everyday). And I absolutely love the scenes of the movie, but I think both films are... well... stand-alone films. Not to be compared to one another and enjoyed for what they are and the messages they convey appreciated
