Actually Earl had no trouble transitioning to an upside-down game (friction from the ball rather than the lane), a fact to which his many senior titles bear witness. Walter Ray Williams could barely compete in local scratch leagues prior to urethane. To compare the two is not possible. Barry Asher, one of the greatest during the hard rubber/polyester days recently booked around 245 and had 7 or 8 consecutive 700 series. He is also a smooth stroker, like Earl. Flawless form is always a plus.
Earl had the perfect style for that generation. I don't believe that style would be successful in today's game. I had forgotten the old ball returns that went almost to the foul line.
@pizzaguy1966 Well said. There will always be a bigger, better deal that comes along and someone will come along that makes even Walter Ray pale in comparison.
If you could move left far enough to loft the guttercaps, you wouldn't be able to bring the ball back on those lanes...with those balls. The conditions were just so different then. It made the game much harder. Today's players have it much easier. It requires far less skill to be a winner in the new millenium.
Earl Anthony is #1 in bowling. By the way, does anybody have the 1987 PBA Seniors Championship with Teata?

Exactly. Plus you have idiots bowling with two hands and the even bigger idiots that allow for it.

First ball in the 10th - That's got to be one of the worst shots I've ever seen Earl Anthony throw. Then again, it was solid brooklyn. lol
