The raids which are the subject of this thread took place on February 13th/14th 1945, and Germany surrendered on May 8th 1945! Therefore, Germany was still very much at war with the UK and the US when the Dresden raids took place.

If the late war bombings of cities were so crucial and 'right' why did we in England not learn about them in school? Why no celebration? The city was flooded with tourists and students at the time, many sleeping in the parks. It was a university town - not a military/industrial target. Read Kurt Vonnegut's (famous american novelist) "Slaughterhouse Five". He, along with my father, were one of the few survivors from that night there. My father survived by being in the basesment of the University of Dresden. Why he was not asphyixiated, I can only give credit to God. Next morning he had to step over thousands of bodies. Yes.

If the late war bombings of cities were so crucial and 'right' why did we in England not learn about them in school? Why no celebration? For a country that is almost obsessed with its role in WW2, it's odd that it just skims over the massacres, if they're mentioned at all in school! I believe that some shame or remorse must be associated with the bombings because although I'm loathe to label whole groups, we are generally a compassionate nation, I think.

At the time of the bombing, there were still 110 factories working in Dresden supporting the German war effort. There were aircraft components factories; a poison gas factory (Chemische Fabrik Goye and Company); an anti-aircraft and field gun factory (Lehman)
Why is the bombing of Dresden a greater tragedy than the bombing of London in which 46,000 civilians died or Roterdam or Wasaw or any of the many other cities then were the victims of Germanys desire for 'Lebensraum' or 'den total Krieg!'

Dresden happened to be the last in a series of cities bombed in WW2. The first was Warsaw in Sept 1945 when 240,000 died. While Dresden was being bombing, Germany was launching V2 rockets against London - rockets made in Mittelbau-Dora by slave labourers, 20,000 of whm were hung, shot, beaten or starved to death. Dresden was a tragedy but no more tragic than the deaths in other cities caused by Germans in WW2.

The city was flooded with tourists and students at the time, many sleeping in the parks. It was a university town - not a military/industrial target. Read Kurt Vonnegut's (famous american novelist) "Slaughterhouse Five". He, along with my father, were one of the few survivors from that night there. My father survived by being in the basesment of the University of Dresden. Why he was not asphyixiated, I can only give credit to God. Next morning he had to step over thousands of bodies. Yes.

The Nazis and Hitler were responsible for what happened at Dresden because they started the war, We defeated them in the war and their war criminals were tried at Nuremburg etc and hanged. I don't consider the bombing of Dresden to be a crime. Both the Allies and the Nazis bombed each others cities (Dresden, Hamburg, Berlin - London, Coventry, Manchester) but only the Nazis put people in gas chambers to kill them - that was a crime.

V2 rockets were still falling on London during and after the Dresden raids. They were made by slave labourers in Mittelbau-Dora where 20,000 of them were shot, hung, starved or died from exhaustion (Wikipedia) A war on this scale cannot be conducted withour the full support of the majority of the population to supply the men and make the bullets and bombs. British cities were evacuated of many children and thus suffered fewer child casualties when the German Luftwaffe came to bomb civilian targets. So, why leave women and children in Dresden and Berlin when the cities were about to be bombed or over run by Joe Stalin's Red Army? Adolf Hitler was the real criminal for not ordering evacuation of his cities - not the RAF, USAAF and Red Army.
