We had an auto fire alarm at our school, when the trucks showed up they had to call in the police(or whoever handles) for an arson investigation. You can never be sure ;)
On my dept. we're told to always treat a fire alarm as a structure fire until proven otherwise. It is an issue that is always up for debate because 99% of fire alarms end up being false calls but at the same time, the biggest structure fire I've ever been to came in as a fire alarm in our 1st due. Even if we do get downgraded or canceled we still continue in at least one unit non-emergent just to check because sometimes people have a problem that they don't realize is going on.
we had an automatic fire alarm to our local college, happens numerous times, so we rolled our engine. chief gets on scene, gets told my campus police that it was nothing, then 2 college kids came out and said there was smoke in the hallway, so one of the cops went down to see if they were right, and smelled smoke, so we rolled everyone. turned out to be a smoking light ballast, but sometimes a little info is worse than none.
well my fd responds with one engine responding code three and the rest fallowing with otu the lights and siren going if needed to update they have to turn their lights on and respond code three
quick story bout this. this volly company used to get AFA's to this nursing home at least 3 times a week. they generally have 2-3 guys on an engine when they get that call, and only turn out 1 engine. well one day they show up to an AFA w/ 3 guys, to find fire venting out of 4 windows on floor 1 and 2 on floor 2. needless to say, they always respond w/ at least 4 on an engine now.
Most departments I know of would run code 3 on an automatic alarm anyway for the simple fact that they don't know what it is until they get there. I've been cancelled or had the code reduced enroute because the first due unit showed up and it was a false alarm, but you generally always treat it as an emergency until you find out differently
Love the siren tones.

@hvjcvhfjv Amen to that. Our first truck out goes hot and the second runs the equivalent of code 2 and can upgrade/downgrade/ stage as necessary.
