Excellent review of an important -- not to mention highly entertaining -- film that broached a taboo topic with wit, style and a fair hand, and includes some of the finest performances of the respective members of its all-star cast. Houghton, who plays the daughter and bride-to-be, was dismissed by critics of the time as shrill and unsubstantial. The fact is hers is one of the best and most convincing performances in the film, which is a mouthful. A masterpiece of film-making.

Your rationalization is a modern interpretation and has nothing to do with the motivation of a black woman of her age and time.
