  • jpeg??? really???...wow....

  • great couple videos....im hoping to become a sports photographer

  • Comment removed

  • why you shot jpeg not RAW?

  • @aldrich2015 because a sports photographer takes so many pictures it would be terrible to edit all of them in RAW

  • @aldrich2015 so they can get the images out to the magazines or what not faster

  • free bag, free lenses, free camera bodies. who doesn't want to work for Getty.

  • 3:45 That's a gray Think Tank Pocket Rocket !? Where can I get that one? I've only found that CF bag in blue and red. :(

    Can someone help me?

  • You messed up the lenses. 16-35, 24-70 and 15mm fisheye...not 17-35,28-70 and 16mm

  • @madeinhungary those are the old versions I guess before canon upgraded them to what you listed.

  • @madeinhungary 17-35,28-70 do exists

  • great vid! for those who wanted a long and fast lens but short on budget, you can look up on those third-party lenses like the tamron or the sigma. they offer 300mm f2.8 at a lower price. tamron even offers a lower price and much more if you look for the manual lenses they've got like the tamron sp 300mm f2.8 ld if which cost more or less $500 (2nd hand). cheers!

  • 600-700$ for a good f2.8 isn't that bad. Faster lens' cost much much more. For example, his 400mm f2.8 lens costs upwards of $7k.

  • how much was the huge Lens??

  • 6 or 700 dollars for a short wide angle lense, and he said it doesn't cost that much!

    holyyy

  • @jabber22 so he might earn alot.. :O

  • @jabber22 Yeah, that's not that much at all. I payed around 350 for my Tamron 17-50/2.8. It's a damn fine lens, but if you want actual Canon or Nikon lenses be prepared to shell out the big bucks.

  • What type of memory card (brand/model) do you recommend? I presume that since speed is of the matter when transmitting and with a motor-drive you need to get high-speed ones?

  • What is your basic camera set-up for football? ISO? AE or Speed Priority? I always seem to have trouble with focus :-( Thanks

  • Nice videos.

  • Very informative. I am trying to get into fashion photography, but I love sports photography and some of the Iconic images such as Ali standing over Liston and the 1968 Olympic images of raised gloved fist by the Black Sprinters.

  • Awesome but that's a 70-200 and it's a 15mm fisheye. I'm not sure why he calls it that but I remember can had them in FD mounts though. Anyway getting my Mark 3 this week

  • i would love that life

  • 25000+in gear O.o

  • im a very amatuer photographer so dont knock me for this question but why does he need 2 mk.3 bodies? surely they are identical? or am i wrong?

  • @feddo62 We do this for few reasons:

1- incase one of the two bodies get killed then when have another one as a spare. This happens alot for professionals.

2- Two bodies allow us to have two different lenses ready to shoot without the need to swap linses. In soccer for example, We usually use 400mm F2.8 on one body while the other body gets the 70-200mm F2.8.

Some photographers uses even more than 2. I personally use three some times and I even saw some guys use four!

  • @ossme thanks

  • what kind of locks does harry use

  • What is your download/work flow like. I am interested in the speed of workflow. What software to you use for work flow?

  • About the cards and runners.. Have you ever think about linking your camera with laptop / Nokia cellphone and send the images straight away in internet in some protected site, where your editor can download the images he wants and there's no need for switching the card?

  • @Masadist Actually they do this. The runner will hand over the images to the editor who intern will do a quick edit and upload it to the site.

I shooting mostly alone and I edit and upload my own images on the field using 3G network.

  • @ossme and they runner may even forget to bring back the cards. o.O guess some good shots he may never see again for himself !

  • why did u delet my comment ??

  • Very Informative , a big help

  • I dream of your job.

  • @jbethel3321 so do I

  • i think i asked this in another video from "damonwebster" but can you please please pleases have katy winn do another video because she is my favorite photographer of all time she is my idol and who i look up to because i am a teen photographer and i know for a fact that she changed to Nikon please tell her Danny Gallaher loves her very much

  • i would trade my gf for the lenses..

  • thinktech or thinktank bags???

  • which thinktank bag is it?

I am shooting Div. 1 Lax and am very interested in this bag.

    Is it the airport international?

  • @Jigsaw3477 is nikon or canon better for sport

  • @ihateyaacov

    I don't shoot with either.

I shoot Olympus which many don't consider professional.

I didn't care for Canon at all but the Nikon D700 is an incredible body as is the D300.

  • @Jigsaw3477 whats wrong with canons at sports game you always see the grey lenses

  • @ihateyaacov I didn't like the feel of the camera's is all. Plus a local wedding photographer had his gear crap out on him.

The white lenses don't mean watch you think. They are good lenses but the truly great lenses in in Canon's lineup are distinguished buy a red ring around the lens. That is their L series and they can either be white or black lenses.

  • @Jigsaw3477 i was considering switching to canon from a nikon but im guessing you wouldnt recommend that lol

  • harry has no hair lol

  • nice rolex

  • Thanks. Informative..

  • hi, my mom gave me the sony alpha 200 Im starting to take photo for a local teen magazine. I really need some new cheap and good lenses for sport photography . Please help me get the correct lenses....

  • I use the sigma 70-300mm with my d60 its great

  • @graffsax i dont know if sony has cheaper lens, but i shoot nikon and i got a 70-300 4-5.6 lens for like 150 or so. i cant shoot high shutter speeds with out a high iso, but so far, ive been able to shoot soccer with the 70-300 at 5.6 with the iso at like 800. i have to zoom in alot becuse there is a lot of noise which makes cropping difficult. try to get a cheap lens that goes up to around 200mm

  • @graffsax

    get a carl zeis lense

  • sigma 70-200mm 2.8

great lens used it on my a350 till i switched to nikon.

  • Canon 580EZ? .... is the audio dubbed or something else?

  • He means a Canon 580EX (or EX2)

  • The big lens didnt look that big untill he turned the lens cap around...

  • Jpg is much easier to send and upload. Generally images that are used do not have to be very large and generally end up B&W anyways. Also, when shooting sports, photographers shoot in 8fps+ bursts, which you can generally only do with jpg.

  • You can shoot at the same burst rate with raw. the burst just ends sooner because the buffer fills.

  • LOL random Nikon bag XD

  • surprising to see majority of editors want images in JPEG format and not RAW..

    any one know why?

  • i dident know that.

  • Yes. The files are much smaller. Who cares about storage? No one, really.

HOWEVER, the cards download to the laptop much faster, and once the image is selected, and/or edited, it will upload to the mother ship MUCH faster. Since that is often a cellular connection, and sometimes satellite, it is important.

  • Regardless of how long they go, 1 spare battery for two bodies seems risky. I carry at least one spare battery per body. Usually one extra.. I can tell you that more times than I can count on one hand I've saved a fellow photog's life by lending him a battery when his died. It earns huge points and really improves your reputation in the industry if you're prepared and willing to help a fellow out.

  • I seriously have to point out how futile it is to nit-pick over the details. Nikon/Canon who cares? Also, who cares if it's 80-200 or 70-200. You use it the same way. Maybe he got in the habit from an old 80-200 he use to have on Nikon, or whatever. Harry's talking from a very practical point of view.

  • Yeah, lol! Nikon in Canon?

Cool vid for the rest. interesting stuff

  • Good info but Harry needs to be sure about his gear, I hope he means a 24-70 2.8, 70-200 IS 2.8 and a 580EX flash

  • Nikon bag in a Canon bag?

  • @GimliG35 as a nikon user im ashamed :)

  • @owendart is nikon better for sports photography

  • @GimliG35

Theres always going to be a bit of Nikon everywhere whether you like it or not! NIKON FTMFW

  • @GimliG35 NIKON!!!!!!!!

  • okay will try. Hoped he had a personal website *s*

  • nice guy...

Does anybody know where to see some of his pictures. I tried to look at Getty, but could not find out how to search for names...

  • google his name. you'll find loads of his shots

  • awesome.

  • hes a legend,i have just bought a nikon 80-200mm af ed lens, does anyone know anything about it?as i got no instructions with it,

    cheers

  • it's actually a 15mm fisheye lens...

  • On a 1.3 crop it's around 16 or 17mm. I think that's what he's referring to.

  • That is one monster of a lens!!!

  • i second that! :D

  • I think his comment about the camera lock and worrying about gear in 'other' countries was not fair to say the least. Thieves can be found in all countries.

  • wow its not a big deal

  • I still believe its not right. Especially given the quantity and value of all that equipment. Surely even o home turf you'd want it safe and secure. The video itself is, however, very good.

  • yeah i see what your saying

  • The truth isn't fair then i guess...... sporting events in other countries aren't as "nice and professional" as in America. American sporting events have a LOT more money invested in them. I am not trying to down anyone or any country just stating facts.

  • He was lovin that air blower

  • when you think about money in the sence of a hobby compaired to a job you dont always think the same,

a formula 1 car cost about 500k to duplicate thats not costing all the tech that went into the car before it got there they say it cost about 10 millon dollars for every new car that comes out, thats a exspensive biz

if you make 100k a year in sports photog

then you can write off about 10k in taxes

if you own your own biz of course not sure about him but he sure dose have nice gear

  • 600-700 dollars is a lot of money =O

  • @jewmonkey125 haha i used to think so until i really got into photography then it all becomes worth it

  • @jewmonkey125 not for a good lens.

  • @jewmonkey125 not when you look at the rest of his gear

  • @jewmonkey125

I think he was comparing it to the other lenses.

  • @jewmonkey125 agree, but the 400mm is over 8000 :) so compared to the 400mm it isnt :)

  • @jewmonkey125 nothing, compared to the tens of thousands worth of lenses, bodies, etc.

  • @jewmonkey125 He meant realative to other lenses silly. And if you are constantly shooting and making money from it it more or less "pays for itself".

  • @jewmonkey125 Not if it's part of your profession, and makes you a living. But I totally agree - as a hobby, absolutely.. $600 is a lot of money. But I've spent probably twice as much (last year alone) compared to what he has showing there, just on computer equipment, in order to keep a cutting edge in my profession. Not even gonna mention conference fees and associated travel expenses (out of pocket).

  • @jewmonkey125 For sports lenses $700 is not much.

  • LOL @ his pouch being Nikon and all his gear being Canon.

  • hahahhahahha

  • Good 'read' Harry, thanks

  • The bag comes from ThinkTank Photo.

  • What is the brand of your bag? Thanks for the video!!!

  • I wanna know if Harrington college of design in chicago is a good school to learn digital photography.

Id like to be a sports photographer. Since I love sports and enjoy photographing, why not get paid for it too.

  • ThinkTank Photo

  • Can you please tell me what's the brand on the bag? Thank you. You are the best..

  • i am amazed photographers (especially sports photographers) manage to make a living out of it, considering how much the gear (mainly lenses) cost!!!

  • A lot of the time the company they work for owns their gear.

  • Yes, Getty owns all of this.

  • I used to shoot sports and my boss owned all the gear too.

  • Just curious. If you had a choice, would Canon be your first choice?

  • Very good video

    DJ A-L

  • I'm surprised he doesn't use discuss the use of remotes for flash/strobes. A fair number of sportsshooters carry pocket wizards...

  • Some sports won't allow you to use flashes. The Olympics actually ban them.

  • Everyone is asking like he himself uploaded this video. I don't think he did.

  • You are correct. harry did not upload this, although we try to ask him some of the questions posted, and get an answer. he is one busy shooter!

  • Ohh, how do you contact him?

  • Thank you for sharing this information.

Do you have any tips regarding positioning for shots during the games your shooting?

Do you shoot portraits as well?

  • Finally got convinced to switch to cannon there is no other way.

  • your bag must be weighing a ton.

  • funy how you had a nikon bag in middle of all the canon gear... loved the presentation.. will keep it in mind when I become blessed with a high end assigment...

a question.. one extra battery for the Mark body and you said you can shoot 2-3 assignments with one.. How many pictures do you end up taking in one assignment and what kinda battery is it..?

  • Probably 7-10K images

  • That is wonderfull. I love your video and you have been so well equiped. love sport photography too. I have to get a 400MM 2.8 one day~!

  • You can still get one in your dream :-) Easy and won't cost you a cent haha

  • Thanks for the tour of the bag.. I noticed the Nikon bag at the end. Did you use to shoot with Nikon before you worked for Getty?

  • Many thanks for sharing and inspiring. Hopefully I can follow your footsteps and work with you as sports photography is my passion. Cheer and best wishes.

  • Love this video!

Reason why is because I want to be sports photographer so much!!

  • Great series of events.

I shoot with the lowly E-3 :) for events but I like how you talked more about gear in general and focal lengths, etc.

I think everyone benefits no matter what they use.

  • Speak English toroscio

  • vedendo questo video deduco che la fotografia tradizionale è defenitivamente "morta".

    cosa ne pensi Harry?

  • He is confused with the gears he uses. Maybe he just know how to shoot and not really care about the gadget model.

  • why does it he continue to call the lens a 80-200mm? isnt it the 70-200mm?

  • its the old, discontinued, 80-200mm

  • my mistake, the 80-200 was black. ah well, i'd still rather be this guy and not know which lens is which than not a sports photographer at all haha

  • hahaha true that

  • I likely call my lenses by the old lengths. Over time, we upgrade. I know there have been some minor changes, but who cares if it is a 70 or 80 to 200? It doesn't make any difference. I know I have one of those, an 80 to 400, a 17 to 20 something, a 20 something to 70 or 80, and fixed length lenses - 8 MM f/2.8 fisheye, 16 MM fisheye, 14 MM wide, 24 MM tilt/shift, 35 MM t/s, 85 MM t/s, 85 MM f/1.4, 300 and 400 MM f/2.8. Of the latter, I KNOW the focal lengths, but the zooms? I know I am close.

  • Harry, great video and commentary. With some determination and hard work I will be like you in the near future.

  • how do you get hooked up with the "runner" job?

  • well

    the 80-200 2.8 should be 70-200 2.8

    the 17-35 2.8 should be 16-35 2.8

the 580 easyflash should be 580EX

the 16mm fisheye should be 15mm

  • canon did make a 17-35 2.8 so it might have been that and he said EZ Not easyflash

  • He did not mean easy either, he meant EX

  • LOL the 540EZ won't even work on a 1D (class) digital body

  • why not?

  • 'cause it won't

  • really.

  • why wont it man I mean it says on the back of the manual compatible with all canon Ex- series speedlights

  • very interesting vids. that sure looked like a 70-200mm 2.8 to me though. the older canon 80-200mm 2.8 "magic drainpipe" was a black lens.

  • existe la traduccion al español???

  • great vids, this is my dream job. if i ever won the lottery i would pack up teaching and go full time as a sports photographer - regardless of my skill level lol!

i wonder how this gear will change - i've read that a lot of sports guys are changing to nikon with the d3 Full frame and the soon to be nnounced D3x (24mp full frame)

  • Very informative !!

  • No matter how old the lens are...but he can afford to have it all.

  • He doesn't have to, Getty images does ;)

  • :) Mind the drool on the floor.

Infact after viewing this video, there will probably be a steady stream of drool flowing to the drains in many households worldwide.

Thanks for the vids 1.2.3 etc.

    Very informative.

    Rich

  • 80-200, 28-70, and 17-35 are older lenses.

  • those lenses are older

  • christ, all the lenses he said are older lenses.

  • So what, you understand what he ment right?

  • are you going to Whistler Olypics in 2010

  • great videos

  • Great gear! Thats awesome getty provides its employees with lenses and camera bodies.

  • Thanks for that , very enjoyable and helpful indeed.

  • nikon bag towards the end :)
