Pearl Jam was more of an alternative band but Nirvana is definitely grunge, whether it be from Bleach to in utero. Melvins are a bad ass grunge band too. But i don't like post-grunge bands or other bands that copy the genre just because it's mainstream
I think grunge is a cross between heavy metal and punk rock that just happened to start first in the Seattle area, some bands are more on the metal side of the spectrum, some more on the punk. Nirvana is more punk and The Melvins are more metal...just my definition.
I just consider bands like the Melvins punk not just because of their sound, but also because of their ideals and opinions. Punk has many sounds, from Stooges to Sex Pistols to Adolescents to Meat Puppets... As does almost every other genre. So is there really a 'grunge' in terms of sound, or is it just a term used by minstream media to pilfer the wallets of witless teens? Don't get hung up on sounds guys, just enjoy the music. You'll save money that way. :-)
@alterdcrash Cds and mp3s are a cop out to listening to music the right way with tapes and viynl mp3 and CDs are just a fad of the mainstream yuppie generation they will go away once punk rock ideals are put back into music
@pot4tots The thing that sucks about that iz that in many places it's really fuckin' hard to find vinyls. I do own one vinyl LP and a few tapes, but I have a shit-ton of CDs since it's all I can usually find. I do agree that vinyl is superior, though.
@TheLegitMan93 Yah i think that since CDs are what are mpost available to us as well as cheapest we can be safe to say that its okay to use them just i think MP3s are the devil of music format lol
@TheLegitMan93 yep me too remember i downloaded your demo but i have to say with mp3s the ease of getting obscure live performances of bands and unknown bands is pretty cool
it has a signature grunge lag. It's pretty noticible. zthe Melvins are really the fathers of Grunge. They were proto-grunge. You are right that most grunge bands weren't as heavy though.
@pot4tots Right, but it wasn't just punk. Actually, it had a lot of metal influence too. Keep in mind also, that punk bands that started experimenting more with metal (like Black Flag around '83- '85 or sometime in there), were HATED by ppl who were into punk at that time. Prior to that, BF could do no wrong. PPL hated the metal direction that BF was moving in. The Melvins were not only directly influenced by BF's Jazz & Metal moving direction, but
Reply to pot4tots (cont). also directly influenced by the stooges. Either way, the Melvins influenced Mudhoney, Green River etc., who influenced Nirvana. Nirvana moved more in a pop-grunge direction (technically), but were directly influenced by The Melvins as well.
@soundsfromnothing Well yah i get what you mean i simply call the melvins punk because of the attitude and spirit behind the band and theyre "call to arms" so to speak when it comes to music and i love theyre metal influences people are just scared of change i mean let me tell you i love the melvins and black flag lol
@soundsfromnothing yea kurt cobain was a huge metlvins fan. he wrote letters to buzz and dale. and when the melvins played around the seattle area kurt would be kinda like a roadie for the band. for lack of a better word.
@acepple95 The Melvins isn't grunge; it's sludge metal. Calling Pearl Jam grunge is kind of pushing it, but even Nevermind's polished sound is still grunge; though not as abrasive(or as good) as In Utero, it still has the characteristic feedback, high gain, and distortion throughout the songs as well as the Pixies's slow verse, hard chorus which eventually became a hallmark of grunge.
@kashiark fucking what? sludge metal? you think sludge metal have every musical aspect of the melvins? Those guys are so fucking weird and different with each record they do. Melvins are the Melvins, there is no genre in the world that could fit those guys, and thats a fact. One of the greatest rock bands of all time, now thats something they have on every song.
This is the best song of the 80's 90's and beyond

I don't believe grunge is a genre, just a label. Bands in or around Seattle during the late 80's and early 90's are what I consider grunge.
