By all rights, Smarty Jones should have won. You can hear the disappointment in Tom Durkin's voice as Birdstone crosses the line. Birdstone's jockey is practically apologizing for having won.

Mare I used to have, had Whirl-A-Way as a grandfather. Best horse I ever had. Unpredictable as hell, but fast,smart, and saved my life a couple times. LOL, she almost killed me a couple times too. Sounds just like Whirl-A-Way.

@ewd76 I agree.Also - the racing industry has a very dirty underbelly - so many Thoroughbreds who don't make it are just shipped for slaughter. And there's a lot of cruelty. We have two rescued Tbreds so we know first hand, and we have learned from experience just what horrific stuff these horses go through.

Why haven't they had winners? Because they're ruining the breed with overbreeding, especially the Tbred foot - look at how many end up foundered. End up chuckwagon horses Calgary Stampede

The Belmont is always the tough one. That's why the Triple Crown is the greatest prize in sports. You did fine, hannahclark.  Keep going! That's what the real winners do.

It's too bad, because is Charismatic hadn't broken his leg coming out of the gate at the Belmont in 1999, I really believe he could've taken the Crown, there weren't a lot of colts that matched him in 1999.

Barbaro is also a tragedy because he too had the talent to take the Crown as well.

However, my favorite Triple Crown Winner, would have to be the underdog in Seattle Slew. He breeding was decent, nothing spectacular, but he had the heart. And beat the next year's TC Winner. Go Slew!

BTW, Man O' War was still superior to all of the other Triple Crown winners...Secretariat can't be matched by any horse...we'll never see his perfection again...physically or athletically.

Only one horse in racing history not only won the Triple Crown but broke all 3 Triple Crown records in the same year and still holds 2 and now has only been tied on the 3rd...and the most memorable race in recorded history is still the fastest in the world...even to this day...Secretariat. Not even Man O' War could touch this horse for speed....MOW no longer holds any track records...Secretariat is still the greatest race horse in history...not just his era. He was magical beyond words...

What sad is nowadays I have the impression that thoroughbreds are much more fragile then they once where. Their cannon bones are becoming either thinner and more fragile, making them prone to shattering at the moment wher eyou'd least expect it.

not bad for your first video, actually its pretty good. street sense had a good chance this year but got beat on the wire at the preakness by curlin. R.I.P. Barbaro and all other horses who's lives were cut short due to racing injuries or abuse.

Smarty Jones was behind one second only his entire career; unfortunately it was the last second of the last race (Belmont)/only comparable runner-Secretariat/Secretariat was not an undefeated horse/ Smarty was faster/liked running/I attribute Belmont loss to jockey/Smarty Jones is now breaking records as a stud/90 something percent success rate/28 foals a year ago/still going/no artificial means, either/Smarty's bloodline = crown winners

Yeah, It was the jockey's fault Smarty lost the Belmont. The jockey asked Smarty to run too early, so when Birdstone came along Smarty had nothing left to fight back. Smarty normally started running at the 8th pole, in the Belmont, he went for the lead MUCH EARLIER.

28 years. But winning the Triple Crown is almost as much about luck as about speed and stamina. Many have come very close to doing it. Horses are fragile. Track conditions. There seems to be a Triple Crown jinx.
