Gary's arraingments are simply the best. This is from his album with Pete and Bill Watrous-Kindred Sprits. This, E.S.P, Lester Leaps In, the whole album. Just amazing! Beautiful , and of course well performed.
This is a wonderful post! Great to see these jazz masters plying their craft. Pete Christlieb has been a favorite of mine for decades. Gary Erwin's skills as an arranger and composer give us who treasure big band jazz much to be thankful for. Keep it comin', Gary!
Check out the 20 sec run from about 02:35 ... constant slithering thru the changes... a run so perfect it couldn't have been composed ahead of time better.
Pete and Bobby have fluid swinging lines that not only swing but have the harmonic underpinnings and direction that grabs your ear instantly. I picked up Tenor at age 15 from alto after hearing Pete with the Bill Holman Orchestra playing "but beautiful".... He is simply the best alive today, and the most under appreciated in the world.
