My women's chorale group sings this same piece and you have helped me to rehearse - thank you so much! Your harmonies and joy in this sweet piece really come through. Have watched over and over again, singing along - thank you!
Beautiful. We use the same melody in Norway, only with the words "Har du barbert deg?", meaning "Have you shaved"? It's basically a song about shaving.
@makkiwi Struga was part of Bulgaria for a long time, too. The language in this song is neither standard Macedonian nor standard Bulgarian. I agree that the caption of this video ("Bulgarian genius") really isn't correct, but only because you can't tell whether it's truly Macedonian or Bulgarian. Either way, it's beautiful, and both Bulgarians and Macedonians should be equally proud that they have such beautiful languages and songs.
The history shows, Macedonia was part of some other kingdoms and ocupied by other nations as well. Does it mean they all have the right to name our songs as they wish? Or maybe because our 2 languages are similar you have the exclusive right to adopt them and call Bulgarian ???
That doesn't make us anything oher then what we are - Macedonians and our songs - Macedonian songs. And yes, I agree, our songs are beautifull and so are Bulgarians. :)
@makkiwi All I meant to say was that the language in this song isn't standard Bulgarian or standard Macedonian, but could probably be taken to be a dialect of either. That doesn't mean I think it's Bulgarian (in fact, I'd rather believe it to be Macedonian). Also, the singer doesn't say he lives in Struga, a kazhuva deka saka da zhivee tamy, gi gleda devojkite, itn. znachi, duri ako pesnava e bugarska, Makedonija ushte e podobra zemja! :)

WTF... I am MACEDONIAN and from STRUGA, this song it's for our town (struga). That things about bulgarian, serbian , albanian are bullshits. learn some objective history!
@TheMadness4allofu If you're from Struga you must know history about Miladinovi brothers? What was the title of their main book- "Bulgarian folk songs",isn't it?.The serbs washed "bulgarian" from title page and from your brain but were not so clever to change the texts of the songs in the book where it is written at many places that people in Struga and around were Bulgarians when the brothers lived in 19th century. If you have not the original came to see in in National History museum in Sofia
Very nice intonation. The vocal production still sounds quite bel canto. I wonder how these young women would fare if they were allowed to experiment more with their voice production and get out of their western head voices.
I am bulgarian from macedonia. bulgarian-macedonias, isnt that same come on dont argue we were part of bulgarian nation anc culture for so many years now no need to forget from 8th sencuary tilll 20th, long time:) just to say that song is beautiful balgarian song but is very expresional and should be sang with slower tempo and with more emotions 'coz every accord has its own harmony and should be felth in the right way. song should be felt thats what i want to say...keep working!!!.

These college ladies are doing great as compared to them, but thanks for letting us know about the tempo, etc. I would love to know the music for this song. Thank you for your information in comment above.
@blozanovski if you are bulgarian is your own right dud' dont tell us what we are...if we were bulgarians, why did our grandfathers change their names in order to bulgarise them ?
when bulgarians came in macedonia, the first thing they did is to change the name of the population in order to bulgarise them.....
@blozanovski You know, it's a beautiful night were I live and I am in a fine mood. I came across this video and I was moved to tears by the sound of the girls' voices. What could be sweeter than people coming together in harmony. Maybe you know more about this song than I do, but for me, your comments don't matter. I enjoyed it and shared it with friends. I am so tired of people who complain....
Beautiful singing - it's sheer pleasure to hear your choir sing and have such fun doing it. There's something very special about experiencing harmony.
Could some one please translate the following verse for me 'Shto mi e milo, mi lo i drago, vo struga grada mama dukyanda iman. Lele varai mome, mome kalino, vo struga grada mama dukyanda i man'?
I'm singing it in a choir in the UK and I'd love to know what it means. Thanks!
@ellischristoff "na kepensite, mamo, da sedam" [i would love] to sit at the window (shutters) "struzhkite momi, mamo, momi da gledam" and watch the young Strugan girls "koga na voda, voda mi odat" when they go [fetch] water "so tiya stomni, mamo, stomni shareni" with their colorful jugs "na ovoj izvor, izvor studeni" at this spring, the cold spring "tam da se s druzhki, mamo, s druzhki soberat" and gather there with their friends
How I would like to have a shop In the town of Struga Hurry, young Kalino To sit by the door And watch the young girls of Struga go by Hurry, young Kalino As they fetch water With their brightly colored jugs Hurry, young Kalino And meet with their friends at the well Hurry, young Kalino That is the entire song.
So be careful about your vision of history, try not to be simplistic nor materialistic, try to just appreciate good art from wherever it comes!
I live in Brazil, my whole family is from southern France, and since early age I was always been attracted irrationally towards Bulgarian culture, in particular the female choirs; Frithjof Schuon must have been listening to one of those songs when he wrote that Mathematical Rigor and Musical Harmony were the constituent threads of the Divine itself!
and as this warriorlike culture is as admirable as were the Celts, the Norse, the Thracians (other forefathers to the Bulgarians that invented the Bastarnae, a sword that for me is only comparable to the Iberian Falx or the Japanese Katana) the Arabs or the Macedonians, you cannot call "barbarian" (a materialistic, anti-cultural term itself) a people that creates a music so wonderful and deep, so overwhelmingly charged with feeling yet so technically complex! You know what I mean...
Moreover, despite any attempts on making racial provocations (which is simplistic given your seemingly limited knowledge of ancient history), I do question your other provocation, that this is a "barbaric" people that attacked civilized ones and blahblahblah... I do not believe in calling a people civilized or non-civilized by the amount of material garbage they leave in archaeological sites! The Bulgarian Kingdom may have been aggressive towards Constantinople in the 13th century (cont)
Nice to see someome that tries to learn western history, but you need to know that first, Macedonian's are Slavic people as the DNA reasearch showed, don't believe to Greeks that try to steal Macednoian history, Alexander the Great was one of many Slavic warriors.
The west is afraid of Slavic people cuase of thier knowledge and strenght, we invented the electricity(Nicola Tesla) and shared it with all the world, we were first in space(Jurij Gagarin), we spread indo-european languag and so on..
True, yet I haven't up to this moment got any material about a possible Slavic origin of Alexander; as far as I know, his armor plate had the carving of a Medusa, a symbology only understood fully by some ophidian cults which some mediterranean peoples shared in secrecy... culturally Macedonians were more directed towards the Dorians... as far as I know...
Just a comment to the Macedonian guy... though I understand your concern about your culture, you make basic mistakes; that the bulgarians came from an ancient tribe in eastern russia it does not mean they are mongoloids, the spatial distribution of peoples is not so linear as official history claims; for instance, Sturlusson states that Ásaland, the tribe guided by Odin and the Drotnar, forefathers of the varangians, norse and danes,, was in the same "turkish" region of central asia; (cont.)
I always loved the translation of this song, it always made me wonder what sparked the person who wrote it to do so: How I would like to have a shop In the town of Struga Hurry, young Kalino To sit by the door And watch the young girls of Struga go by Hurry, young Kalino As they fetch water With their brightly colored jugs Hurry, young Kalino And meet with their friends at the well Hurry, young Kalino
oh please stop! With the comments...these are lovely young singers making music! This is what brings us toether...and a beautiful song at that. So let's stop talking racial divides. When I first heard this song it was heaven...let's keep it at that. All the best, Briar
For those of you who post racial comments I can only say that you are only proving how low your intelectualiy is and nothing else. You can not force people to be what you want them to be understand that.
And to the rest of the world wake up in the 21st century, there is no FYROM it is MACEDONIA a great country with a great history and great people.
Unfortunately, there is a good reason for your country to be called "FYROM", i.e. not "Macedonia"!!! It is because your identity claims are preposterous, your national history is science fiction and "the world" does not accept imposters, appropriating the cultural heritage of other nations...
It seems like you do have some knowledge of English so I suggest you start reading a bit more REAL Balkan history, not FYROM-ian jokes, and broaden your horizons a bit.
And fortunately for me I do have a broad horizon and live in a country like no other!
Fortunately for me I grew up in a free country and have been thought to respect everyone that posseses a good and honest heart regardless of their race or background. And last but not least fortunately for me I am not concerned about little opinions from little minds. There is a lot more to life than politics and ridicilous comments and claims.
You are the one in mistake, it was proven that ancient Macedonians were Slavic by DNK reasearch on identity of ancient Macedonians and Alexander the Great.
It was kinda logic that he wasn't Greec, you could have seen that just by knowing that he burned Athene and Sparta to the ground while he never harm any other city he conquered. That was cuase Greecs were afraid of Slavic people and tried to destroy them, thats why Alexander hated the Greecs soo much.
Toll Mädels, wunderschön gesungen man kann richtig fühlen das Ihr ne Menge Spaß am singen habt!! Stellt doch bitte weiter so schöne Harmonien ins Netz!
I fell in love with this song when I heard Kitka perform it on "A Prairie Home Companion", and it took my breath away. You all do an amazing job. Just beautiful!
Преди две години се запознах с една американка в Испания. Когато споменах, че съм от България, тя каза,че пее в хор, който има в репертоара си много български песни. След това запя точно тази песен! :)
What we (Macedonians) in common with the Bulgarians have is the great love to Macedonia...with the only difference that their is highly pathological.
Wonderful performance and great song, but i couldn`t tell if the girls are coming from Bulgaria, USA, Macedonia... Everyone could learn a macedonian text, not just Bulgarians.
Seriously, if it didn't say 'Yale choir' I would have thought you were bulgarians. For the past half an hour I've been listening to this performance of yours and to 'Ergen deda' as well and I just can't get enough! You girls are amazing, keep doing the great job!
Once again, the fact that Struga is in FYROM today, does not make the song any less Bulgarian. There are Bulgarian songs about Istanbul, but that doesn't make them Turkish! Daaaa!
PS: A country by the name of "Macedonia" does not exist yet!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So you deliberately try to be terribly STUPID. It's a MACEDONIAN song from Struga, made by my ancestors who were MACEDONIANS. MACEDONIA exists, check the map, and itisa faaaaar better country with faaar better culture than your stupid Tatarland, because you tatar gypseys have no culture you try tosteal our own beautiful culture, but it won't work, keep to your own miserable dirty selves, you are not able to create a beautiful song like this. MACEDONIAN SONG FROM MACEDONIAN PEOPLE!!!!
Well, if you think your ancestors created this song, then you are Bulgarian. When this song was first sung near Vardar there were no FYROMians because, FYROM was created by Tito in 1944. Before that Macedonia was inhabited by Bulgarians and Greeks. Check the Miladinov Brothers' collection of Bulgarian folk songs in Macedonia.
see, I knew you were stupid. Tatars never lived in Macedonia, and there's no such thing as fyromians. Struga is a town in Macedonia, the Miladinov brothers were Macedonians from Struga. Connecting them with anything tatarian is sickening. Beautiful MACEDONIAN SONG, Beautiful MACEDONIAN CULTURE.
Unfortunately, you're mistaken. I'm not a member of the Tatar minority in Bulgaria. I'm an ethnic Bulgarian. BUT I have nothing against Tatar people because I'm not a racist swine like, it seems, the majority of FYROMians, including yourself. The Miladinov Brothers's collection is titled a collection of BULGARIAN songs from Macedonia. I wonder why. Maybe they too were stupid... Or maybe because they lived before Tito and Stalin created the FYROMian identity.
I'm not mistaken, all, so called, Bulgarians are Tatars. So your roots lie with the asiatic, mongoloid, turko-tribes who, in the past, attacked civilized and cultured peoples. And you're still doing it, because you have no culture of your own, you try to steal MACEDONIAN culture, even songs that have lyrics with toponims from MACEDONIA. And my friend, you are a racist pig, you use something called fyromians to describe me...
and you got those racist ideas from your tatarian propaganda that falsyfies like the Miladinov brothers' collection. I was taught not to hate anybody, but these constant attack by your aggressive tatar nation that still lives in the past, makes me hate your barbaric tribe more than anything.
I don't care if it's Macedonian or Bulgarian the harmony is so good it's downright spooky. These young ladies are really having a great time singing. As a barbershop singer I feel qualified to recognize great a cappella singing when I hear it.
Beautiful Bulgarian song. I know many of you pretend its Macedonian, yes but its from that Macedonia that is a region in Bulgaria. And although many of you refuse to realize that you were brainwashed by your government, and that in fact you are Bulgarians, ask your grand fathers who you are. Learn to read history, history wrom facts, not manipulated by your government. Its really curious why would they sing in bulgarian if the song is Macedonian. Have you asked yourself this question?!?
This song is about city Struga in Macedonia,if u understand macedonian(Not Greece or Bulgaria). You,Bulgarians and Greeks sing about your cities and leave ours alone!!!
Beautiful bulgarian sogn from the beautiful bulgarian town Struga where two of the most importnat bulgarian from the revival period were born - Miladinovi brothers. They published a book, called "Bulgarian people's songs" and died in struggle against the greek ingluence in south-western Bulgaria.
How I would like to have a shop In the town of Struga Hurry, young Kalino To sit by the door And watch the young girls of Struga go by Hurry, young Kalino As they fetch water With their brightly colored jugs Hurry, young Kalino And meet with their friends at the well Hurry, young Kalino
Beautiful Bulgarian song!It so stupid to say thet this is eastern European music, because Bulgaria is part of Eastern Europe.Bulgaria is also part of the world.
"Beautiful Bulgarian song!It so stupid to say thet this is eastern European music, because Bulgaria is part of Eastern Europe.Bulgaria is also part of the world."
No it´s not stupid to say that is eastern european music, but your comment is as a fact stupid. If you was a bit educated you would know why. :)
Yes, you absolutely did! (My daughter is in the Yale Slavic Chorus) and they performed on the Slavi's Show during their visit to Bulgaria this summer.
No, they are completely student run. They try to take a trip every few years, though, to immerse themselves in the culture and have a hands on experience like they di If you just do a search on YouTube "Yale Women's Slavic Chorus" you will find the 3 postings they have. They two songs were posted by one of the girls' father who video taped them and the Bulgarian dancing woman was posted by my daughter. Thanks for your interest
How I would like to have a shop In the town of Struga Hurry, young Kalino To sit by the door And watch the young girls of Struga go by Hurry, young Kalino As they fetch water With their brightly colored jugs Hurry, young Kalino And meet with their friends at the well Hurry, young Kalino
how can it be a bulgarian song if it sings about a shop in Struga a city in Macedonia near the border with Albania. This is no where near Bulgaria? Lets be serious here...
Bulgaria was there from the 8th century till the 20th, this makes around 1200 years, right? Wake up and read some non-falsified history books written outside former Yugoslavia.
that's right you macedonian moron....you people are so messed up in the head that I feel really sorry for you...not a single part of this song is macedonian, it's purely Bulgarian. I wonder what it feels like when your language is actually someone else's and your 'nation' is a by product of communist yugoslavia, soon maybe you will have the same faith. SAD very very SAD
Tatars (these are actually Bulgarians) and other uninformed people,
,,Што ми е мило ем драго на Струга града дуќан да имам..,, is a Macedonian songs. It was and will remain only MACEDONIAN. A Tatar waste can only dream about personal identity and about it accept my regrets.

'Shto mi e milo, mi lo i drago,"
--- Oh, how much I [would] love, how much I [would] like,
vo struga grada mama dukyan da imam"
--- To have a little shop in the town of Struga
Lele varai mome, mome kalino
--- Oh, now hurry, young lass, young bonny lass.
I would try to find the entire text in Bulgarian, since it contains some regionalisms I am not certain how to translate.
Best Regards, Ellis from Bulgaria

@ellischristoff Actually the song would include regionalism/dialect slang from the areas of Struga and Ohrid, in Macedonian, and not Bulgarian.
Also Kalino is the girls name in the song, and not a descriptive adjective.

The best--simply the best!!! You ladies rock it! As an A2, I especially love your strong bass line.
How I wish I'd known about this group when I was at Yale (1970's)...might have spent my time better!

oh please stop! With the comments...these are lovely young singers making music! This is what brings us toether...and a beautiful song at that. So let's stop talking racial divides. When I first heard this song it was heaven...let's keep it at that. All the best, Briar
Chastalard 3 years ago
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT BRIAR!
For those of you who post racial comments I can only say that you are only proving how low your intelectualiy is and nothing else. You can not force people to be what you want them to be understand that.
And to the rest of the world wake up in the 21st century, there is no FYROM it is MACEDONIA a great country with a great history and great people.
patkarka 3 years ago
Unfortunately, there is a good reason for your country to be called "FYROM", i.e. not "Macedonia"!!! It is because your identity claims are preposterous, your national history is science fiction and "the world" does not accept imposters, appropriating the cultural heritage of other nations...
It seems like you do have some knowledge of English so I suggest you start reading a bit more REAL Balkan history, not FYROM-ian jokes, and broaden your horizons a bit.
iquirer 3 years ago
And fortunately for me I do have a broad horizon and live in a country like no other!
Fortunately for me I grew up in a free country and have been thought to respect everyone that posseses a good and honest heart regardless of their race or background. And last but not least fortunately for me I am not concerned about little opinions from little minds. There is a lot more to life than politics and ridicilous comments and claims.
Cheers mate! :)
patkarka 3 years ago
You are the one in mistake, it was proven that ancient Macedonians were Slavic by DNK reasearch on identity of ancient Macedonians and Alexander the Great.
It was kinda logic that he wasn't Greec, you could have seen that just by knowing that he burned Athene and Sparta to the ground while he never harm any other city he conquered. That was cuase Greecs were afraid of Slavic people and tried to destroy them, thats why Alexander hated the Greecs soo much.

WAY TO GO, girls!! What an AMAZING PERFORMANCE!
Seriously, if it didn't say 'Yale choir' I would have thought you were bulgarians. For the past half an hour I've been listening to this performance of yours and to 'Ergen deda' as well and I just can't get enough! You girls are amazing, keep doing the great job!
Greetings from Bulgaria! :)

once again, a beautiful interpretation of an old Macedonian song, for those who don't know, it's about Struga, a town in south-west Macedonia.
Glosuraban 3 years ago
Once again, the fact that Struga is in FYROM today, does not make the song any less Bulgarian. There are Bulgarian songs about Istanbul, but that doesn't make them Turkish! Daaaa!
PS: A country by the name of "Macedonia" does not exist yet!!!

Glosuraban 3 years ago
Well, if you think your ancestors created this song, then you are Bulgarian. When this song was first sung near Vardar there were no FYROMians because, FYROM was created by Tito in 1944. Before that Macedonia was inhabited by Bulgarians and Greeks. Check the Miladinov Brothers' collection of Bulgarian folk songs in Macedonia.
iquirer 3 years ago
see, I knew you were stupid.
Glosuraban 3 years ago
Unfortunately, you're mistaken. I'm not a member of the Tatar minority in Bulgaria. I'm an ethnic Bulgarian. BUT I have nothing against Tatar people because I'm not a racist swine like, it seems, the majority of FYROMians, including yourself. The Miladinov Brothers's collection is titled a collection of BULGARIAN songs from Macedonia. I wonder why. Maybe they too were stupid... Or maybe because they lived before Tito and Stalin created the FYROMian identity.
iquirer 3 years ago
I'm not mistaken, all, so called, Bulgarians are Tatars. So your roots lie with the asiatic, mongoloid, turko-tribes who, in the past, attacked civilized and cultured peoples. And you're still doing it, because you have no culture of your own, you try to steal MACEDONIAN culture, even songs that have lyrics with toponims from MACEDONIA. And my friend, you are a racist pig, you use something called fyromians to describe me...
Glosuraban 3 years ago
and you got those racist ideas from your tatarian propaganda that falsyfies like the Miladinov brothers' collection. I was taught not to hate anybody, but these constant attack by your aggressive tatar nation that still lives in the past, makes me hate your barbaric tribe more than anything.

That's great! How do they find the lyrics? Is there a Bulgarian who helps them?
StanislavaDaskalova 4 years ago
No, they are completely student run. They try to take a trip every few years, though, to immerse themselves in the culture and have a hands on experience like they di If you just do a search on YouTube "Yale Women's Slavic Chorus" you will find the 3 postings they have. They two songs were posted by one of the girls' father who video taped them and the Bulgarian dancing woman was posted by my daughter. Thanks for your interest

Bulgaria was there from the 8th century till the 20th, this makes around 1200 years, right? Wake up and read some non-falsified history books written outside former Yugoslavia.
