Hardcore is extreme punk. if you know green day. as punk. you get one point right. It's most of the time powerchords and very fast music. But with screams and not clean singing. Also more "metal" sounding guitars and fast drumming. The feeling is still important. That's hardcore to me. The feeling is one thing which should just always be there.

I left Hardcore for Death metal/black metal but I grew up with this stuff from when I was 5 years old. You never forget it.

Fast drumming has always been signature to HC, not metal... Double bass (petuie*spit*) has been signature for metal (for quite some time, not specifically from the start)

And if you mean by Hardcore specifically New York Hardcore, there are indeed bands that started playing Drop D such as Madball, SOIA and Biohazard. But there still are bands from the Boston Hardcore scene that never started doing this, Slapshot (not that they play anymore :P) and Blood for Blood (just not nescesairy)
